What was the worst?

Worst hire in RU sports history?

  • Dick Anderson

  • Chris Ash

  • Kevin Bannon

  • Kyle Flood

  • Fred Gruninger

  • Julie Herman

  • Fred Hill

  • Craig Littlepage

  • Eddie Jordan

  • Mike Rice Jr.

Results are only viewable after voting.
Shea should be there. Man we’ve had some mistakes. Recency bias will likely play a role here. I voted turn the page. Men’s hoops program was perennially successful prior to his hire

Flood. Ash was a worse coach, but the Flood hire killed all momentum Schiano had built up over the last decade. Had a chance to turn Rutgers into a perennial top 25 program, but completely squandered it. Ash was a joke but had less to work with when he took the job

Eddie Jordan was easy. To me it was a decision that was doomed before it happened. Hindsight probably made most of the other selections not work. i knew Eddie was a bad choice and wouldn't work from Day 1.

I went with grunniger. Just because he made so many bad decisions for so long .
He also hired 3 of the people in this poll - and he hired terry Shea too.

Pernetti should be part of this poll (although he shouldn’t get a lot of votes)
Tim hired 2 people in this poll and then did everything he could to keep Fred hill jr

Gruninger for me. His worst single decision among the many bad ones, was to keep RU out of the new Big East, separating them from their biggest rivals and costing the University millions of $$$ and lots of TV exposure. His rationale was to hold out for an all-sports eastern conference but any such conference would have had to include Syracuse, Pitt, and BC, who would have been our basketball rivals in the BE anyway.

It took PSU leaving the A-10 for the B1G to finally get RU into the BE. But for 13 years, JoPa was Gruninger's "daddy."

Not true. I think he tried to fire FHJ and Barchi wouldn't let him.

Gruninger miscalculated and it certainly cost us for a while, but ultimately his vision was spot-on. I say this as a huge basketball fan and 30 plus year season ticket-holder, Fred understood that football was the true key to everything. My recollection of where the Big East was at the time RU was invited to join is that only Syracuse, BC and UConn were football schools. Pitt and Villanova didn't join until later, a couple of years after we declined the invite. Fred probably did wish he could revisit his decision at some point, but here we are, decades later, in an all-sports conference with Penn State.

Huh? The football program was a joke under grunniger .

Definitely a case could be made BUT we might not be in the Big 10 with an altered trajectory

I am surprised Mike Rice hasn’t garnered more votes. Not only did he embarrass the school and make us a laughingstock, but his firing directly led to the hiring of Eddie Jordan, who’s heart may have been in the right place, but was just totally inept as a college coach.

is the lamestream media voting in this poll as to why Julie has 10 votes. Listen she didnt work out but Jordan was here and Flood was here. She didnt make any major hires and did some upgrades that helped soccer, baseball and wrestling. Boo hoo the media hated her, of course that same media whiffed on the whole Mike Rice situation so they can shove it. She was never going to get the donations needed that Hobbs eventually did but I think finally toward the end of her tenure there was discussion that RU needed to spend on hoops if they were going to compete in the Big 10. Stunningly Barchi wanted to continue things on the cheap. Not a good hire but considering the stunningly bad history of RU hires and her short tenure not the worst

People want to throw rose petals on TP getting RU in the Big 10 when the credit mainly belongs to Uncle Bob and Greg. He hired two guys that ended up embarrassing RU in the two biggest sports and then the following hires were disastrous for both programs. I do not get how people just pass over this plus he failed to address the aging CVS situation and then fumbled the Fred Hill firing which meant he didnt get to do a proper coaching search for Rice....likely we would have had Fran McCaffery and Mike Rice nor Julie Hermann never would have been hired. Tim made or didnt make decisions that sent the athletic program into a death spiral

Bac. The Lamestream media ? I voted page as you did. The most vociferous posters on this board were very anti Julie from the start and painted her as a completely diversity hire

put that in because the NJ press hated Julie from the start and then got their cronies in the national media to join in. She was attacked on minutae comments, scrutinized like no other AD...it was really amazing to watch them in tandem. Plus we did have a sizable TP fan group who was butthurt and how about the ones who took out that newspaper ad...way to sabatoge. Look I was a big fan. She needed to go. Barchi most likely was lectured by the NJ government that he had to step up

Only morons think pernetti did a good job here

Why is Dick Anderson on this list?
Dick Anderson's main issue on Day 1 was to yell at guys for wearing hats while working out. He was a bad hire at at specifically bad time. We could have gone up when we went down. He was another dirty trick played on us by Joe Pa. Even his son chose Penn St over Anderson's Rutgers. I have him as far worse than Shea, worse than Flood... but Littlepaige is the worst.

He was also sandusky’s buddy

I think you meant Fred Hill Jr. Big difference

I voted for Littlepage. He did more damage and faster than anyone else on the list.
To be fair.. formation of the Big East did most of that damage.. but I still picked him.

She was the one that didn’t cozy up to them if I recall. What was the negative comment she made about the ledger? She didn’t play their game. Didn’t one of our ADs basically ask the press to try to not be so difficult? I actually just responded to them about the ridiculous take that now we definitely won’t have the number one class

she was giving some private talk in person to a journalism or media class at RU...somehow one of the students taped it and gave it to the NJ press....taking comments out of context where she said good to a comment about the Star Ledger being in trouble....ill track down the exact quote

all the Nj media guys piled on including some very very close to RU that worked at a blog...it was ridiculous

Julie Hermann on The Star-Ledger's potential death: ""That would be great. I'm going to do all I can to not give them a headline to keep them alive." The Star-Ledger laid off 167 people last week, the latest round of devastating cuts in a struggling industry

thats why its the lamestream media...the headline was JULIE HERMAN SAYS IT WILL BE GREAT IF THE STAR LEDGER GOES OUT OF BUSINESS

If they're not writing headlines that are getting our attention, they're not selling ads – and they die," Hermann told the Media Ethics and Law class. "And the Ledger almost died in June, right?"

“They might die again next month,” a student said.

“That would be great,” she replied. “I’m going to do all I can to not give them a headline to keep them alive.”

Well, whoops on that, Julie.

Ash. A guy unfamiliar with NJ gets hired and decides to goof off instead of hitting the ground running (sound familiar?). Then he becomes a know it all, shitting on Rutgers traditions.

He should've been fired for cause after 78-0.

The thing with Julie is if she canned flood in 13 and made a good hire, she would have lasted a little longer.
She didn’t get to hire or fire a football coach or men’s basketball coach. Those are two of the things and AD is judged on

You really can’t use that reasoning imo

The answer IS Grunninger no doubt
All the coaches listed here are a result of his mismanagement

Some of our younger alums or fans probably don't know who Gruninger was. He was an AD that destroyed any chance of RU going big time when it mattered. His hires and his decision-making were so amateur that he sent all of RU Sports back 25 years, and we're still trying to catch up today.

Please add Dan Donigan to the list
I had a closeup view of that one
You would not believe how much of a disaster he was
In order
Ash
Anderson
Shea
Littlepage
Jordan
