Hated the Scoreboard Music PA production

Find out who’s in charge of game day ops. They’ve gone in this direction in the past 10 (20?) years. The organic experience is a thing of the past. Now you can’t have a timeout without some kind of gimmick. Baseball is worse: after EVERY pitch (at least at Citi Field) you’ll hear some kind of music clip or crowd engagement blasting over the PA. It’s as if they assume everyone has ADHD and needs redirection every 30 seconds. The PA announcer him/herself has little to say anymore outside the intro for the national anthem and player intros.

But that’s just it.

The “other stuff” you continue to poo poo in Football and now Basketball IS what makes it different and more importantly makes it OURS.

We all realize the canned stuff is “hear” to stay whether we like it or not.

So I think what many would like to see is more of a balance. With a slight lean to the “ole’ college try” aspect of the experience.

* and obviously not true. since you were outed with your t-shirt begging. LOL
I poo poo it in football because I much prefer canned music over marching bands. That's just my opinion as I like rock/pop/hip-hop way more and I also like high volume music. Many of you disagree, but shouldn't assume this board, which skews much more heavily older than the actual fanbase, is representative of the fanbase. I'd need to see survey results of the fanbase to know for sure.

With hoops, I like both the canned music and the pep band and simply didn't notice some huge change towards more canned music and louder music in game 2 (and I do pay attention). Is someone actually tracking this?

Also, at the end of the day, the music is inconsequential to me, even though I have preferences. They could be playing New Age wind chimes or opera all game and I wouldn't care as long as we were winning or they could play all of my personal favorite songs and that wouldn't make me happy if we were losing.

this board is more representative of the season ticket base absolutely

I don’t get the need to add a bunch of noise to sporting events. My preference would be to only have crowd noise, plus the sounds generated by the game itself. All the music, band or canned, all the asinine DJ rile up the crowd BS, I dislike it all immensely. Don’t even like cheerleaders or dance teams, (or horses, sorry), etc.

I really just want to sit and enjoy the game. Everything else is just an unwanted distraction.

I’ve felt this way since I was in HS. Never understood why people like all the ancillary crap.

Glad I wasn't the only one that noticed and was displeased by the team coming out to piped music instead of the band playing the fight song. Unfathomable, frankly. It was pretty sad, looking over at the poor pep band while all of that was going on. Game Operations people trying to squeeze every last bit of organic fan involvement out of the arena and try to make it like any other NBA game. Terrible. And for the love of God, get rid of that "Make Some Noise" crap. Good Lord, that is awful and pathetic. If they didn't bombard everyone with piped in music, then maybe the fans would be making some noise on their own without prompting like they always used to. Students starting their own chants, cheers, R-U chant going on forever because it isn't cut off by some piped in music.

This is COLLEGE basketball. Come on, now.

Have been attending RU basketball games since 2002. Have been to 2/3 this year so far. I think the atmosphere is great. Bands are a thing of the past. Like it or not, most young kids would much rather hear piped in dance tunes than the band.

Exhibit A is when the song Fien came on towards the end of the game. If you don’t know that song, then you probably prefer the band…. It is a generational thing.

No one is saying get rid of piped in music entirely, but not entering to the fight song is bullsh$t. No one does that around the country- maybe some smaller conferences, but do we want to emulate the NEC? Stop making it a generational conflict - there’s room for all age groups to be entertained.

Then stick with HS. 😉

As @RUPete said, and many of us too, balance is what we're looking for.

Balance Schmalance. It's all about me, dammit!

Get rid of the DJ, the band, the cheerleaders, the dance team, the announcer, the student section, all the fans, etc.

Empty the place except for the two teams, the refs, whoever's operating the scoreboard, and me (plus any hookers or sheep I bring along, who will all be instructed to only speak in library-acceptable tones).

That would be perfect. Then I could be focused.

Do young kids buy season tickets? If not, then it makes more sense to cater to the season ticket holders for now.

Later on, when the kids are old enough to start buying season tickets, they can cater to their likes and dislikes.

I dunno. Maybe I'm in the minority but did not think the piped in music and balance with the band was as terrible as made out to be in this thread. Was there overkill at times ....sure. I also did not find the piped music always to my tastes. However the RAC was packed and very loud at times - good for an OOC. The anthem instrumental was good as well. There were even several respectable R.....U...chants. The band also played a number of tunes and I enjoyed hearing them as well.....did not feel that they were under used to a significant degree. The game was close....almost too close.....and a good time all around for me.

Fair post. My main beef is doing away with the fight song during the team’s entrance. I don’t hate all of the piped in music - it has created some new traditions in a way. Would we have Dancing RAC Lady without the piped in music? I think not!

👍

Sounds like, at least for him, @RUInsanity is talking about some sort of balance.

Different ears hear different things.

To add to this...I wonder if it could be possible (like they used to do for wrestling in some places) where the spotlight is on the mat and everywhere is dark.

Just illuminate the court and that's it.

I'll cheer when my team forces a shot clock violation. Everything themed is lammmme. Every review do we really need the "tell me something good". How about the fans just scream at the refs like we always have.

Before you say I'm too old and don't like the noise I got to 40+ gigs a year. This crap has been horrible at football and basketball so far this year. Click click boom, really? Make some noise ? Trash.

When we ran out of the locker room they changed the song they were playing like 3 times in 50 seconds.
It sounded terrible.
They were doing this shit last year too. Playing immigrant song for like 11 seconds. It's bizarre

I will say that the music took the life out of the game at times along with the fans.

Good post. We're clearly in the minority here in thinking that things aren't way different from past years, but then again, until someone posts some actual data comparing canned vs. band music rates, it's old guys yelling at clouds for me. Loved the Anthem instrumental too.

Well …for those who hated the wolf of Wall Street “Hum” and knight pulse ….it was eliminated from the football games this year and the same throigh the first three games in hoops

I wonder how Bruce Johnson would describe the atmosphere at the RAC these days.

He might have to update a few things, like “left to right on your radio dial” might have to become “left to right on your iPhones earbuds.”

I’m biased having been in the band, but for college basketball (and football) the band adds way more to the atmosphere than constant piped in crap.
Couldn't agree more, more band and less music!!!! For football as well!!! Why are we not getting game surveys like we did with football...They made some positive changes lately...
