Hated the Scoreboard Music PA production

LOL! If the players don't like what's being played they can stuff $100 bills from their NIL accounts in their ears.

And before anyone jumps on me, I've already voted with my wallet and dropped football season tickets because the atmosphere just pisses me off at this point. I'm getting into games on a buddy's kid's guest pass for students when I'm able. Up until this year I've had some kind of ticket package since '92 but it was hard for me to justify as I do not agree with NIL at all (I know it's going nowhere) but it became impossible for me with the advent of the PJ Mullen era at RU.

When that clown is fired I'll probably look into renewing on some level but not before.
Have already decided not to renew football next year for same reason. Noted that to Athletic Dept. via the feedback emails.

Good post. We're clearly in the minority here in thinking that things aren't way different from past years, but then again, until someone posts some actual data comparing canned vs. band music rates, it's old guys yelling at clouds for me. Loved the Anthem instrumental too.
Stupid post. Several people including myself have agreed with Insanity’s post and feel the same way, yet you keep trying to insult other fans and pick fights on this topic. And don’t give me the data nonsense as you and I both know there will be no analytics nerd sitting in the corner crunching numbers on this issue ever. What’s your problem other than insisting on being the board contrarian on this topic?

You’ve previously admitted to being around loud music / high levels of volume most of your life.

With all due respect, you most likely suffer from hearing loss.

Your strong/minority opinion on anything related to the type music being played or the decibel levels is just a bad one.

True, but my hearing is normal for my age, somehow. And my opinion isn't inherently "bad" - it's just different from the majority opinion of board posters and probably 100 section fans (both groups skew old), but my guess is most students agree with me judging by how crazy they go when the loud canned music is played.

Why so salty over someone having a different opinion? People argue over all kinds of stuff and I made one gentle insult at bac (called him grandpa - so mean, lol). Seems like you're the one hurling the insults. I have no "problem" other than not being fond of people stating their opinions as if they are facts and I tend to call BS on such things. While I also didn't like "Bring em out" over the fight song (fact), I didn't think the canned music was way louder than in the past or that the band played less - maybe I'm wrong on that, but that's my opinion and I'm entitled to it. I also tend to get annoyed at people complaining about every little thing in the football and hoops game experiences outside of the game outcomes - very little bothers me I guess.

The atmosphere in the student section was actually better a few years ago than it is now.

This is when there was piped in / pump up music, but it was used more purposely and not all game.

I think even the students are getting tired of the constant barrage of loud and cheesy music all game.

yep...

play a song during a tv time out...esp after the band finishes there song or an RU chant dies out...students seemed to love the knight pulse and wonderwall and whatnot

just stop with the make some noise and clap your hands and everything else they do to drown out the fans who want to cheer.

Would love to hear from actual students on this - one would think that the athletic dept. has done surveys of students who attend games on such things. I know three current students who regularly attend hoops games (two sons of friends and a student in chem eng'g who I mentor) and they've all said they love the games and the entertainment, although to be fair, I've never asked them specifically about canned music vs. the band or the volume of either, plus it's only an "n" of 3.

2 years ago we played Columbia and Sacred Heart in the first 2 games. I don't recall the student section being crazy in those games. Perhaps your comparing for conference games from several years ago? I would expect the students to pick it up this season against SHU and Conf opponents.

I doubt the school is surveying students about the music or volume at FB or BB games. And it wouldn't matter anyway, if it's just some written survey sent out without the proper setup. People don't really understand the impact of varying levels of sound pressure unless they're told to specifically pay attention to it.

The only way to do such a survey and obtain accurate results would be to use A/B testing. You let everybody know that the school is testing audio entertainment over a two week period where, in week one, the audio entertainment would be super loud filling up every possible moment before, during and after the game, and in week two, the audio entertainment would be loud, but not so loud as to force people to shout to be heard by the person next to them, and there would be break periods of relative quiet to allow people to relax a bit.

I would predict that well over 90% of respondents of all ages would say they enjoyed the second week more than the first week. Because you still get all same music and audio entertainment and at fun (i.e. loud enough) sound levels - but without being exposed to unhealthy sound pressure levels over too long a period of time with too few breaks.

This isn't about old people who hate loud sounds. Such people aren't going to expose themselves to a stadium full of loud sounds in the first place. This is one of the few issues where we can have our cake and eat it too. Because stadium audio can be presented in such a way as to please pretty much everybody. It can be loud enough to please while not being so loud as to ruin the experience for some.

Have been attending RU basketball games since 2002. Have been to 2/3 this year so far. I think the atmosphere is great. Bands are a thing of the past. Like it or not, most young kids would much rather hear piped in dance tunes than the band.

Exhibit A is when the song Fien came on towards the end of the game. If you don’t know that song, then you probably prefer the band…. It is a generational thing.
It's not like they play "cool" new tracks or anything that they would hear at a club or EDM show. It's the same overplayed mainstream poppy crap

Yep. I'm old. I admit I don't like Fien. Give me the pep band playing Hey Baby and I'm a happy camper.

I miss the simple days of marching bands (football), pep bands (basketball), and organs (baseball).

Ok, grandpa. I didn't even notice a difference.
Welp....my dad and uncle....who have been sitting in Row A almost every home game since Craig Littlepage, sure as hell noticed so, yeah, I'm thinking you're wrong here my friend.

Also....you can tell on TV....there is ZERO momentum built for the crowd. You can NOT:

- go right into piped-in music when a timeout is called as we are on a run
- go right into an ad when a timeout is called as we are on a a run
- play piped-in music OVER the band (this is something that should be handled in the pre-game production meeting).

There ARE times for the good piped-in music, I WHOLEHEARTEDLY AGREE, but there are times when it should be the band, PERIOD, and whoever does game day @ THE RAC (not sure if it's PJ or someone else) is APPARENTLY doing a piss-poor job so far this season. It's ruining the MOMENTUM of the fans being "pumped" far too often and, YES, it was very noticeable last year as well (attended half our home games).

Full disclosure: I haven't gotten to a game yet, not sure if I'm going Friday, but I get a "full report" every game and it's also very easy to tell on TV what is/isn't happening there 90% of the time ESPECIALLY on BTN+ because they don't cut away (and the audio is available a hot 10-seconds into the timeouts).

Preach Nuts, preach.

Can never really hear the Jim Valvano introduction. Shame. It’s unique and cool.

And why in the world R they still using Our House, our State, video, when it should be R House, R State? Attention to details. Fix it.
Agree. How the **** can somebody in charge NOT figure this out?

And btw, our fight song kicks ass. Why would you not want to hear it as much as possible?
When we started immediately going into piped-in music or ads @ THE RAC, 5 years or so ago, instead of right into "The Bells" - while making a run - I wanted to donkey-punch someone.

100% spot-on. Same shit, different year, other than adding Steve Aoki's remix of "Pursuit of Happiness" at football games BUT even that he cuts the damn thing short before the part that would really get the students going. PJ hit gold creating PSU's atmosphere at Beaver, with 2 songs VERY easy to use at the time, but he's not a good DJ. Period.

lol, nice cherry-picking. Very little about the game entertainment bothers me and certainly I've never complained about it on the board. Plenty of things about people complaining about every little thing in the game experience annoy me (a little bit); we have threads almost every year complaining about the food, the beverages, the music, the band, the lines, the water prices, the bathrooms, etc, etc. etc. All I care a lot about is winning.

Could be wrong on them playing more/louder canned music this year, but even if so, I don't really care. Our group had a blast the first two games and thought the crowds were fantastic for early season cupcakes - thought it was a better atmosphere than past seasons for cupcakes, but some of that is probably a simple function of the games being fully sold out in anticipation of the phenoms.

With regard to PSU, I certainly don't follow them closely - and especially not their music - but am curious what two songs you're referring to in your other post that "made PJ." And I'll admit that having shared the ride to/from the Orlando bowl game and hearing you play quite a bit of EDM/dance music, I would've thought you'd approve of having more of that at football/hoops games.

LOL I have ZERO problem with EDM so long as it's produce properly (see: at the right times, not cut off at the wrong point in the song, etc, etc...). ZERO. IIRC PJ was instrumental in creating the "Greatest Show in College Football" (or whatever they call it) at Beaver Stadium which involved the "white out," Kernkraft's "Zombie Nation" and White Stripes "7 Nation Army." IMHO he has tried too hard here, kind of "doublling-down" on what was done there, and it's just TOO much.

BTW - I thought I was kinda light on the "EDM" (which I hate, it's such a generic term) during that drive (although HEAVY on the fast food, lol....)!!

Here are my thoughts in NUTShell:

A good DJ (see: Carl Cox, John Summit, James Hype) has a "feel" for the crowd. There are big-name DJ's out there today who are GREAT producers but suck on "game day," so-to-speak, as their entire 2-6 hour set it pre-programmed (see: Steve Aoki). Our in-game production - football and hoops - has VERY LITTLE "FEEL" anymore and that's what sucks about it IMHO.

Example: team is down 7, goes on a 12-point run, then BOOM!!! You're hit with an EDM song or an advertisement. NO, NO, NO, NO and NOOOOO! The ONLY thing that should happen there is the band busting into "Bells." That's it, nothing else, the rest can come AFTER the place goes crazy. This really shouldn't be too hard to figure out and any DJ worth their salt knows this!

Oh and adding the train horn to hoops?? NO THANK YOU!!!! END IT NOW!!!

I thought it was mentioned our players had a voice in the team entrance decision?

Student section was better a few years ago because the teams we had were much better years ago.

Basketball games should leverage the band as much as feasibly possible.

THIS! I feel like everything we do is programmed instead of it being situational. It’s so odd.

If done right it can create a whole different feel to the RAC. The place does get loud and energized at times but there are many times the air just feels like it’s sucked out of the building. Our DJ needs to be better and give the band their time and place.

I recently went to a Villanova game and felt the DJ and music flow really meshed with the game. It was a bit gimmicky because they actually had a MC that interacted with fans during stoppage in play. It didn’t feel out of place as again it happened with flow of game but a bit cheesy.

The largest takeaway for me was how the DJ flow had the student section rocking. While I appreciate our students showing up their student section had a whole different feel to it. The music selection had them really engaged. Also the student section opening to the game was awesome—everyone interlocked arm to shoulder and swaying back and forth. It was pretty cool

Take notice every time out song is the same. During halftime they played 2 songs at both games. I can't remember the first one but just before the team comes out for the second half they play Good Luck Babe. Too programmed.

Problem solved, all we need is a good tech house pre game and half time set from Coxy!!

Simple common courtesy.

Just like you wouldn't go to your friend's house, walk into the room where their baby is sleeping, and start clapping your hands.
Wait. I'm not supposed to do that?

Now you tell me. Well, I guess that explains why so many young parents don't invite me back.
