When does Pike need to start actually winning games?

Next year is when I start having expectations.

Team will finally be upperclassman heavy, with the sophomores having had a decent amount of experience this year. It will be one of the most experienced teams we've had on the banks in a very long time.

Sr: Omoruyi, Thiam, Carter (JC)
Jr: Baker, Young (RS), Kiss (RS), Doucoure
So: Mathis, Johnson (RS), Harper, McConnell
Fr: Mulcahy, TBD

And also the depth at each position

PG Depth: Geo, McConnell, Young, Mulcahy
SG Depth: Geo, Young, Kiss, Mathis, Issa, Harper Jr.
Wing Depth: Issa, Kiss, Mathis, Harper Jr. Mulcahy
PF Depth: Eugene, Harper Jr. Carter, Duke
Center Depth: Myles, Duke, Carter

Would luv to see the last scholarship go to a mature Euro big (4/5) that can shoot from the perimeter

They did a nice job on Geo. Give them credit. I actually like McConell now but he’s really not fast enough as of yet. A year of experience should help him big time.

IMO not until year 5 which is when I expected progress from the beginning and not before that.

The smart fans realize that the roster is an absolute mess and Pikiell has not improved the talent in his first few classes enough relative to our conference mates to start winning. He should be given ample time to recruit and the facility should help raise the talent level.

It has been surprising to continue to lose to horrible out of conference opponents so I understand why an objective fan would start to get concerned. There’s just no excuse. At all.

And although it’s year 3 and IMO too early to judge Pike because of how tough the situation at taking over was it’s flat out INEXCUSABLE to not have a PG by year 3. I HOPE it’s a mistake that doesn’t destroy this season and the goodwill he has earned from a lot of the fanbase and media and wind up acting as a true roadblock to improving recruiting by the 2020 class. That would be a disaster.

Next year we lose only Shaq and never thought I would say this, but it’s a big loss because he’s playing good basketball. But I think Johnson and Carter will do fine. We definitely need to recruit a top center for 2020.

But 2019 is going to be the year we finish on the plus side and make some type of post season. 2020 is the big recruiting year because we then are replacing Omuyuri, Thiam and Carter so we need three 4 star players. And don’t forget there’s still one more spot (maybe 2) for 2019.

I said in the beginning of this season that we just can’t focus on the record just yet and that doesn’t mean we aren’t going to win games. I still believe there’s an opportunity to win 5-6 big ten games this season but it’s not going to be easy. We need full support for this program regardless of the record because recruits take notice. Keep packing the RAC for every game and creating the home court advantage and they will come.

For one point of reference, it took Scott Drew five seasons at Baylor to have a winning season and he made the tournament that year. IMO it's a similar rebuild schedule here though for much less tragic reasons of course.

I agree......Pike needs a "signature" recruit"......
I put myself in a kids place
- am a blue chipper
-I look at the upcoming facilities
-I have a coach like Pike
-I am being given a 1st class education..at a world class school

Signature recruits want to go to the Association. That’s all.

While I'm sure Pikiell and staff would love to land a couple of big time recruits, just remember his strategy and what he said at his press conference--and what he's continually followed up on here:

"I think people are underestimating evaluating players and developing them," Pikiell said. "What my staff and myself have done a great job of is getting a guy that may be a little under-recruited. We saw something in him that other schools didn't, and we made him better."

Rutgers doesn't need 5 star recruits to make the NCAA tournament and finish above .500 in the Big Ten. They need kids in the 50-150 range that will stick around for 3+ years and develop their game.

I fully support Pike, but with this season likely to have Rutgers finish at or near the bottom of the BIG again when does Pike face the heat to actually win games rather than just be competitive. I was thinking year 4 is when he must start showing tangible progress in the win/loss column but what do others think?

When does he have to start winning these games?
soon, or his shine will fade quickly, this program needs a winner badly
