Who's getting excited for this season?

So what was it?

Going under is an acceptable way to defend the pick and roll. There are about 8 other ways used by coaches at the highest level. If the defender going under did not work hard enough to close the gap that's a hustle issue.

lack of toughness or ability

Fig, cut it out. The two teams we fielded had no talent/ability. Mack was a shooter playing point guard. Jack was a one dimentional second option scorer trying to be the teams superstar.
Jordan got the most out of them. Lets see what happens this year with a roster capable of competing on both ends.
Jordan can coach, he has proven that. This roster has to prove they can win, im sure they will be more competitive than year one and year two.

Last years team had obvious deficiencies on the defensive end but some want to blame Jordan.

A below average defensive PG, a PF that played even less defense, no depth and no rim protector options on the inside.

FIG...okay, so I can assume that you heard Jordan tell the players to "go over" on picks but they were not tough enough or talented to do it?

Of the 8 or so acceptable ways to play against picks, Do you know how Jordan teaches it to his team? OR, maybe you don't think he teaches it at all.

Exactly!!! Very obvious observations. I really do not like to bash our players, past or present. But we knew they were not Big Ten players before either season began.
Why certain people continue to try to throw dirt at Coach Jordan is rediculous to me.
And as long as they do I will continue to bash them.

I like EJ.......I want to see more emotion from him
more concerted effort from the team......
and
as many have already said......progress

The only school with a downward trend right now is Nebraska so RU will have to cut the gap with the Penn States, Minnesotas, and Northwesterns

This belongs in the Things That Bug You thread.

Is there more than 1 Penn State?
Is there more than 1 Minnesota?

Please list all of the Minnesotas?
There is Minnesota, and ...
I think they are the only Minnesota.

I'm excited about the new talent EJ has brought in. Seems like more energy surrounds the program.

But I fear long scoring droughts again because of our lack of outside shooting. Hopefully better defense and press can create TOs and keep us out of half court game, where we will likely struggle.

Mike Williams was told to fight to the correct side, but everyone else wasn't?

Stop making excuses. Last year's team lack toughness. I blame both players and coaches. If things will ever improve simple things like getting through screens properly will have to be fixed. Players who refuse to attempt to do things right on the defensive end can NOT be allowed on the court.

Going back to your point....Rice did defend screens differently by switching, especially in years 1 and 2. This hid the defensive deficiencies on the roster. Going low on a screen and watching guard after guard bury open 3s has never been a strategy of any coach at RU. We saw it time after time last year. Mike Williams made the effort, others did not.

This is going to be yet another long year of watching and hoping what can be in the future. As always, I will be watching ever minute of it.

FIG, unfortunately, you are distorting the facts. Open shots given up were mainly due to guys being slow in rotation and not closing out on shooters.....it had less to do about guys getting open looks from picks because players went 'under'.

I remember the game threads and posters were hammering the players because they were slow to close out on shooters.

Facts are not excuses if they are true....the team had two major deficiencies on defense (maybe 3) getting major minutes and a lack of depth.

Regarding Rice, he played switching man to man....the same as Pitt, where he coached under Jamie Dixon. Of course he picked up different things from other coaches along the way. This is actually my personal preference on playing defense.

HERE IS WHAT JORDAN SAID LAST YEAR

More specifically, Jordan said they left too many shooters wide open.

"I didn't mind a hand in the guy's face who made shots but I didn't care for the open shots because... we didn't guard the ball."

This should come as no surprise to anyone watching Rutgers basketball during the in-conference schedule as this is a team which has a lot of problems switching coverage. As Jordan alluded to in his earlier comments, they don't seem to understand the 'help defense' or perhaps more accurately are not willing to partake in helping each other out.

Players do not switch positions on defense, don't shift to cover an open man and at times that results in wide-open looks from the perimeter.

Sports Illustrated rated this program DEAD LAST amongst BCS basketball schools. Let out the optimism now, but it likely will be dead by end of December.

Teams last year put a simple pick at the top of pick because they knew Mack would go under it and they would get an open look. Bigs weren't rolling.

I get it. Very easy from me to say from the stands that players who don't put the effort in defensively don't see the court. Jordan is then stuck playing Dadika and Williams 30+ MPG and we lose by 40. I just think at some point a line needed to be drawn in the sand. Competitive basketball teams play with a certain pace and purpose on the defensive end. We didn't. Blame is on both players and coaches. How much to allocated to each is debatable.
