Will Trackwrestling have the ESO?

One thing I think we can all agree on...this team is mean, strong and DEEP. A mind boggling number of RU wrestlers are still alive, many wrestling against teammates in championship matches, and we might have as many as 3 freshman starters at 125, 165 and 197. Mulligan with 4 mins of RT on Correnti and Paetzall destroying everyone in his path at 125 has me smiling big and wide.

Looks like Paetzell and Mulligan have earned starts.

The kid Paetzel will be wrestling (Petril, Kutztown) is a junior who wrestled at the D2 NCAA championships last year, very good litmus test for Paetzel.

Dippery beats Delvecchio 1-0.
Paetzell with a dominant tournament and final win.

Terrific news for Brandon Paetzel. Being from Warren County originally and being a big wrestling fan for both HS and College, I've been aware and following Brandon at P'burg HS since he was a freshman there. At the open practice at Athletes Glen last month I got to speak to him for a few minutes. A terrific rep for RU who spoke about all the papers he's been writing for his classes, the very tough practices at The Barn, and his love for the RU program. I hope he's won himself a starting spot.

Im loving the DEPTH of this team. Dippery, Giraldo, the Van Brill Brothers, Scott, Pagano, Deluca. We have backups who would be bonafide starters on many teams.

Tyson Dippery and Willie Scott may have just earned themselves starts out west.

Thought it would take Mulligan sometime to adjust to 197, but looks like he is doing just fine. Didn't see that coming.....at least not this year, anyway.

With Theobolds injury unknown at this point, will be interesting to see if Giraldo or Theo opens the season in Cali

Yes it will. Redshirt decisions at 165 will also be very interesting.
165 appears to be the most unsettled of all of Rutgers weight classes overall in that there are many options.

Dippery and Giraldo can and should go to California. I think both earned starts out there today for sure. Paetzall at 125 and Mulligan at 197 were extremely impressive today as well. Gross will be serviceable at Heavy until Correnti is ready. Anyway here is my lineup for California...

125 Paetzall
133 Delvecchio/Dippery (Both will get starts out in Cali)
141 Ashnault (of course)
149 Theo (but Giraldo will get West coast action as well)
157 Lewis
165 Scott (Might get Grello work)
174 Bak
184 Gravina
197 Mulligan
HVY Gross

Bret Donner , true freshman from Wall HS, beats Painton at 165. Starter ?

165 will be very interesting. Scott/Donner/Grello might have to duke it out in practice this wk to earn the right to go west.

Let's see who wins the 3rd place bout , lol I wish I had driven the 90 minutes to Stroudsburg now, lol.

Dippers winning 1-0 doesn't make hi
The better guy in my eyes. It will be interesting to see how the coaches handle this

The only aspect of your post that I don't see is Correnti at 285.
Correnti would be ideal for a 215lb weight class should a 215lb weigh class ever get created. But, I just don't see Correnti ever getting big enough to be successful in the existing HWT weight class. He did just drop some weight to get down to 197 so maybe he just needs a little more time to adjust to that drop.

Both Delvecchio & Dippery have already used Redshirts so they will both wrestle this year. But, I believe that Tyson's wins today will earn him the initial start out west.

Tyson could really end up having a great year at 133.
And Delvecchio could too.

Wow there is a lot to sort through after todays action.

Why was McCabe wrestling at 133 if this tournament was to decide the starters?

How strong was the competition in this tournament overall? In weight classes where we had multiple entries could the coaching staff evaluate that one wrestler as being better even if they only finished third based on who they faced versus someone who lost in the final?

Seems like we had enough head to head action to minimize situations where the situation above would come into play.

So many guys seemed to have wrestled well and it appears that many of those who lost initially ran into a Lehigh starter at some point.

Theo's health is probably the most concerning situation coming out of this.

Biggest surprises Mulligan winning 197? Paetzell at 125? How well the likes of Scott and the Van Brill brothers wrestled? Unless clear cut, I am trying to redshirt Grello and Donner. If Mulligan earned the start, probably Correnti too.

In some respects its too bad that Dippery and DelVecchio are in the same weight class.

Yea, was thinking the same thing. I still think DelVeccio has more upside, but the coaches will make the call.

Hoping Theo is healthy as I would love to see him make a run this year. However, I think Giraldo could make some noise at this weight. We have great depth at these weight classes.

good tournament, showing off depth I can't remember Rutgers ever having before. quick thoughts:

125 - I'm guessing (just a guess) McCabe missed weight. I'd still expect the returning national qualifier to start and Paetzall to redshirt, but coaches have some time to decide.
133 - 2 excellent options in Del and Dip. hope Tyson can hold weight, that is a cut I do not envy. Can't go wrong with either.
141 - Very nice to see the young Van Brill beat a very highly touted Karam. if he stays at at 141 he will be a very nice back up for Ash next year with lots of potential for the 3 following years.
149 - really hope Theo's injury is not bad and he was pulled a precaution. I think he could have a monster year.
157 - DeLuca and Van Brill the elder add a lot of depth behind Richie. this is the kind of depth the major powers have. a rop 10 guy with 1 or 2 national qualifier guys behind him.
165 - I'd expect Grello and Donner to redshirt and Pafumi and Scott to battle it out all season. long
174 - Bak could also have a monster year. really hoping he puts it together for his senior campaign.
184 - Weiler was a big recruit for Lehigh so that was a nice win for Gravy. 184 is absurdly stacked this year nationally but Gravina should be competitive with most everyone.
197 - tough to gauge from the competition but Mulligan could be the man here. 197 is weak nationally so who knows how far he can go. will be fun watching him and Correnti go for the next 4-5 years.
285 - another yet unsettled weight. several good athletes competing so that is good but expectations will have to be tempered. the Lehigh kid that won, Wood, is a going to be very, very good.

an encouraging tournament, though the only real competition was from Lehigh, which is another school with tons of quality kids in the room. both teams will be a problem for anyone in a dual meet this year.

should be a fun, great to have the season back.
