I hope you’re right in saying Palm isn’t very good at this. He moved NU to Omaha. I would prefer elsewhere just to get away. Ha

Tremendous job as the bubble is large . Teams you have left out St. John’s , Seton Hall,Virginia , Pittsburgh , Indiana State and Wake Forest have all have an argument. The 3 bid stealers in the PAC 12 and American and A-10 left them out.

I have Auburn and Duke as 3 seeds and Kansas reluctantly as a 4 and Baylor as a 4. Flipped with you.

Otherwise , especially difficult year with the amount of unranked teams beating ranked teams.

Thank you...With Kansas..the ncaa continues to say those players will be back so i think they deserve benefit of foubt

Bac - you’re the best !

I can only imagine how much time / research you invest!

My only adjustment: Big East will not have only 3 schools regardless of what committee says about conference affiliation importance etc.

They ll somehow justify either St John’s or Seton Hall at the expense of Colorado State or Oklahoma .

yeah does Bubba from UNC on the committee get Virginia in

are the Q4 losses by Texas A&M a non starter

Oklahoma could easily be left out for sju or shu

The committee likes to balance the conferences. I can't see Big 12 getting more than 8 and SEC isn't getting 8 in over the B1G at 6. Just a hunch.

looks to me like 8 people were perfect on the teams (assuming the final brackets are all out there now). That's more than I expected to see.
yeah there was 20 Virginias out 200...it wasnt that outrageous to pick them and if you compare them to Oklahoma you can see why but I thought in the end that NC State stole their bid...in reality though there may have been something at play capping the Big 12 bids...if so OU was an easy toss at that point

I think you missed Oklahoma? Who got in instead of them?

Congrats man. You're amazing at this stuff.

Bac, did you cover what you missed and why you think you did?
so I got 67 of 68 correct missing on Virginia who I had as my last team out and Oklahoma as my last team in...and that was a close one for me.

45 of 68 seeded correctly

62 of 68 seeded within 1 spot.....now this is a much higher number for most because of the unexpected screwiness with the Mountain West seeding.

now I had Gonzaga a 7 but they were a 6 on the seed line but bumped to 5 because BYU cannot play on Sundays and the committee did not want to work hard enough to redo some things to allow them to say on the 5 line. So BYU went to a 6 and Gonzaga to a 5. So that was a big impact for me

Also New Mexico seeded 11th was a shocker...I had them 9. Nevada at 10 instead of everyone basically having as a 7 was insane. Boise State a 10 instead of 8. I had Fla Atlantic a 10 seed in the first four games but somehow got an 8

My one coup I am proud of was getting Colorado State right in the first four games albeit that is the only one I got right as I had Michigan State, FAU, and Oklahoma in these games as well instead of Colorado, Boise State, and Virginia

Key lessons
  • conference tourney performance matters very little if at all UNLESS you win.
  • conference tourney wins are just one game...3% of your season. They move the needle less than people think. Wild seeding swings do not happen. Iowa State was never going to be a 1 seed.
  • body of work rules the day
  • the committee members are likely bringing in their list of schools they have in before Thursday of tourney play begins and they are not budging
  • this year a total outlier with that many bid stealers. Has nothing to do with screwing the Big East schools
  • basketball analysts on tv and sports guy on radio need to stop declaring everyone a lock based on a win
  • every year there is a school like Oklahoma/Rutgers that appears a lock in mid February and come selection sunday gets sucked right down the toilet blowl and flushed out of the field
  • Quad 3 peformance can make up a less than desirable record in Q1/2
  • you are not getting invited if you are 2-3 games below 500 in Q1/2/3...see Providence
  • having a great NET always helps but you are not selected or not selected based on NET.
  • some bracketlogists go crazy over 4-5 diffferent rating systems...i am much less metric based than others.
  • SOR (Strength of Record) which is performance based is playing a greater role especially in seeding..see Mountain West
  • its not one thing that the committee looks at, its EVERYTHING and you want have as little red flags on your profile or else you are at the whim of the selection committee
  • non conference wins matter...committee wants to see you do something OOC. Its 1/3 of season but they specifically continue to say this every year.
  • Upper level Q1 road wins are coveted the most
  • not all Q1/2 wins are created equally. The committee knows the difference between winning at Central Florida barely qualifying in Q1 and winning at home over Florida.
  • always good to have home wins vs the field but if you are not winning on the road you are getting penalized...see Colorado State
  • Big East schools are judged individually vs everyone else and its not about conference affiliation.
  • Yet there likely is somewhat of a cap perhaps...see Big 10 last year, see Big 12 this year, whether that is true remains to be seen
  • conference realignment will wreck havoc with at large picture next season
  • expansion is coming even though I am against it
  • Rutgers will be back in the NCAA tourney next year.

  • SOR (Strength of Record) which is performance based is playing a greater role especially in seeding..see Mountain West
That is WAB

@bac2therac fantastic work. And I enjoyed the key lessons posted above.

Did the extra bid stealers make it a wee bit easier to pick the field as you no longer had to split hairs between the Big East teams and others?

My final thought. This was a good season for RU to crap the bed. What if we had won 19 games and not got in? That probably would have happened and we'd all be super pissed. We avoided the agita.

yes it was easier that they were all out than having to parse through...in the end I tossed all 3 Big east teams out and narrowed it down to oklahoma and virginia for the last spot. I was not high on Indiana State and would have got them wrong for sure. Very tough to judge the midmajors but to me they didnt beat anyone but Drake even as they ran up a high number of wins in Q3

Or 21 even
You would know, Mr. 2nd Place. :)

Have you considered reaching out to Politi, Carino, or Fonseca to do an article on your accomplishment? Considering how much attention Wachtel gets from these guys, I would think it's pretty newsworthy that you did so well.
