Baseball!

Eh since the basketball team is terrible and the only action in football is people leaving, I thought I would talk about some baseball!

I know its only three games but some things that I have noticed-

This is a very very very top heavy lineup. We knew what we were getting at leadoff and the #3 spot with Cohen And Doucette, and we heard all fall how good Bonds was, but the surprise of this year I think, and actually what I believe is the reason Bonds was moved to cleanup, was the emergence of Brennan Hyde. All he does is hit the baseball. He hit .400 twice at his previous stop. But the rest of the lineup may not produce much with a bunch of young players trying to find their way and a couple of pickups that we will see how it works. When the top of the lineup is not hitting we will not score runs. At all.

The starting rotation has yet to give up an earned run this year. I know its Kennesaw State but we will see how this develops. This could mean alot of low scoring games.

My favorite pitcher on the team Quinn Berglin threw three scoreless inning of relief. I have never seen him live and I can't wait to watch him play.

Everyone is complaining about the offense, but ….

Shack, are you impressed with any of the 3 freshman on defense? Are they building blocks on defense?

You are not wrong, but is it going to happen?
Grant is the only one with a solid future. Dortch is at best a defense only player. He can be disruptive but his lack of offensive game won't get him many minutes. Sommerville is a tweener who can score some but not much else.

OT: Your stories of a brush with famous people.

Can't believe I forgot to post this in my original post. After my ACL surgery in 1984, I'd rehab at The Hear Institute in Red Bank. A state of the art place for all kinds of rehab. They had a direct link to Riverview Medical Center for heart patients, a dunk tank for checking body fat, Cybex machines out the Gazoo, anything you can think of. The owner was hired to go on every tour of Bruce Springsteen's band. I'd see and chat with Bruce, Max and even Clarence as we seemed to be on the same 3 days a week schedule. Bruce there mostly for endurance, and Max to rehab his wrists, not sure about Clemons reason. Met Denny McLain and Bill Mazer at Mickey Mantle's in Manhattan when Bill used to do his radio show for WFAN at Mantles.

Met Mickey Mantle signing autographs back in early 80s in Toms River at the opening of a new store. Nice guy. Was in Vegas and on an elevator, doors open, and it’s Anna Nicole Smith with a couple bodyguards and a tv crew filming for her old tv show. The bodyguards just said “get out”. The former Yankees GM Gene Michael used to play alot of poker at the Borgata. I thanked him for the late 90s dynasty. James Caan was also at table next to me at Borgata playing NL hold about 10 years ago. He was very nice to everyone around, I didn’t bother him.

What i would like to see……

What did Pike do with 30 seconds left in the 1st half with Oregon having possession. He took Ace and Dylan out.

Ace and Dylan are killing us on D and more importantly they are killing morale.
The entire team doesn't play defense...lol...yet you're blaming Ace & Dylan. On defense the biggest problem has been the lack of an above the rim big but lets ignore that as well.

Don't know why you are blaming morale on these guys either. With a supporting cast that is playing like the Bad News Bears the two of them could have quit on the team weeks ago but didn't. If there's a morale issue that's on the captains for not being good leaders.

Harper

Hit the wall at 22 games? IDK, this is the time most real good freshman are starting to pick it up, have adjusted to the speed and length of defenders, ect. He played 10 more HS games last year, granted not the same thing. I'd say tired could be a factor, but it's built in with a lack of desire/interest, maybe injury as well. I'm sure it's more than one thing.
I saw the freshman wall in my household. This is exactly what it looked like. Right around the same time of the year...different sport. The wall should get broken through

Harper

Bittle gets switched on him and he takes a step back 3. He definitely isn't right......looks like hit the wall hard.

Went to the Cutting Room in Manhattan to see the John Corbett Band. My wife (ex#2 again) was a big fan of Sex and the City and Corbett was in it along with the Cutting Room's co-owner Chris Noth. After the show everyone was hanging out at the bar. Noth was putting a move on my wife. Didn't bother me since I had been introduced to Corbett's girl friend........Bo Derek.
She was very gracious and posed for a picture with me.
Do any of your ex's live in Texas? 😁

Ace and Dylan Top 3? Sorry. Don’t see it…

The fanbase would like to go 500 and qualify for the conference tournament with two top 5 lottery picks.
The hype from experts warranted those expectations.
When you have to defend your best players with talk of high ceilings and potential you know you’re having an awful season
I mean, you of most here, should known what was coming on a team expected to be led by freshman. No veteran leadership - I was killed all offseason saying JWill showed me no leadership qualities last year. No emphasis on the defensive end of the court in team building.

The expectations are fan induced. I expected a bubble team, but really aren't surprised by any of this. Pike abandoned his defense first culture. I actually thought he abandoned it last year, but he got that team to be decent defensively.

Future

If we can keep Sommerville and grant and bring in a true power conference point guard we MAY have hope. That is the only scenario where next year isn’t a dumpster fire because we’ve already proven we can’t expect to hit on multiple portal players
Keeping Grant is far more critical. Sommerville is a tweener that can't play defense, above the rim or rebound well. Grant is a rebounding power forward with a developing offensive game. You pair Grant with an above the rim big and you have a pretty potent duo on the boards.

OT: NY Mets spring training thread

As they're going with the 6 man rotation I think Peterson is safe.

1. Senga
2. Manaea
3. Peterson
4. Montas
5. Holmes
6. Blackburn/Canning/Megill

Losers of #6 go to pen as long man in that Trevor Williams role. The other I'm not so sure. If it's Megill he might be better in a setup role.

I'm also not sure if Blackburn will be fully healthy to begin the season unless I missed something on that.
I'd breakup the lefties.

Basketball Rutgers falls at Oregon with porous perimeter defense and struggling stars

seen it time & time again this yr when AB is on hes hitting them from the 300 section with every one in the RAC guarding him but when he is off nothing is going down. Way way too in consistent. Give me 7-14 or 8-16 every game rather than 13-16 1 game and 4-18 the next
Who would have ever expected freshman to be inconsistent? A great mystery this is.

Harper

Pike is scrambling to get out of this season without looking any more foolish than he already does. Announcers are already mentioning lack of effort, not taking warm-ups seriously, and importance of winning for Ace and Harper. I’m sure he wishes the season was over and maybe something magical might still click with this team in the meantime. Since we all know that won’t happen, his best scenario is to win a couple more games without calling any negative publicity to the program. Not playing two lottery picks when the season is over just makes him look even worse. In a few months, when the dust has settled, he can quickly grab some leftover mid major players, throw some bullshit out there that Carino will eat up, and he’s bought himself another year.
Lol...I suspect this is precisely what will happen too!
