Tackling

I was very critical of our tackling after the Washington game but holy crap what a difference vs. Nebraska. Would have loved to watch practice this past week because I'm guessing there was a major emphasis put on it. All three levels of our D just had some 1 v 1 absolutely dominate wrap up and finish type tackles. Was awesome to see and huge reason we played so well on that side of the ball.

Kudos to both players and staff for making major strides in a short period of time. If that continues we'll be way closer to the defense I thought we'd be before the season started.

4 of 20

That’s why we lost the game. We were 4 of 20 on third and fourth downs while Nebraska was 10 for 22. That efficiency is particularly troubling for Rutgers as we hardly throw the ball past 10 yards

Also, After the blocked punt, we had 6 opportunities to score from inside the three yard line.

Perspective

I waited a day to post this because I too was frustrated as heck at all the things we all were yesterday. I’m not going to repeat the list….

Bottom line is we came in to this year with 2 gimmie games and 10 toss ups where really it’s no shocker of either team won.

We are 2-1 in those games. Prob should have lost to Wash and beat Neb.

Yes still tough to swallow because we all had a Magical run and season thinking playoffs (way back in our minds and the longer we stayed undefeated the better. (especially after some national folks started picking us as dark horses - I knew that would set some folks up for meltdowns) .

Now so keep hearing we SHOULD be 6-1 going in to USC or we HAVE to be.

Why?????

We are 2 point favorites vs a Wisconsin team. They can’t win this game?

I would suggest everyone reset, be happy about the fact we have a REAL shot to win (or lose) every game the rest of the way and get behind this team enjoying each and every week 1 game at a time!

Let’s show up and have a real sell out this weekend. I just added 17 people to my fam for the game. Huge huge game. Need all the help we can get!

Beat Wisky should be our only thoughts!

GORU!

The Good...and the Not So Good (Wash edition) plus Nebraska look forward

The Good:

  1. Running backs. What can be said-KM had a run for the agers (and a Heisman campaign?, especially if he runs wild vs USC, and Browns TD run and balance-wow. Will Benjamin and Raymond get some time? Packed room.
  2. QB--AK has answered the bell each week. The td throw to Strong was very nice. All around a sold B10 qb.
  3. Strong" The leap and the TD (we who have been crying for the end zone high point opportunity exulted) were great and each week looking more big time.
  4. Bend dont break D. Not really liking concept but cant argue that it dint work at least Wash week.
  5. Pass break ups. Were there when needed (Dixon, Lbeam etc)
  6. Duff-Showed flashes of possible stardom.

Not So Good:

  1. Linebackers: Powell is solid and his tip was excellent. Djabome has done better than expected. But the rest are concerning. Walker has seemed small in the spring game and currently and has been pushed around, bad angles etc. Gather Wright is the 3rd, and this explains why going to 2 LB set. Dont see how this is not a portal area #1. Powell going down w injury would be VEY concerning.
  2. Pass rush--Been well documented.
  3. Using blitzes creatively for pressure. This had been a staple and not so much so far. Hear we blitzed 40% of pass plays but sure didnt feel that way. Needs to be re-incorporated.
  4. Special teams: Wash blocks a kick but we dont get close on multiple fg? Thought that was our thing. No real attempts at advancing punts while not blocking. Surprisingly ST needs some work
  5. Right side of OL--Didnt seem to struggle as much as against VT, but still a concern

GOOD hope to see v Nebraska
  1. OL getting a push on run plays allowing RU to control time of possession
  2. Big play to either Duff Strong or Miller on long ball
  3. No turnovers
  4. A punt block-could be game decider
  5. Let Black return kickoffs-could be the big play needed to take pressure off ground slow plan.
  6. Disguised blitzes leading to 2 sacks.

Goal Line Formation

I would like four WR wide, two to each sideline, spreads D. Brown RB Sheppard QB. Either handoff to Brown with Sheppard following to push in the back if stood up or Brown lead blocker and Sheppard keeper up the middle. Sheppard has 18lbs on AK and was a runner dual threat in HS, we should try to make us of him situationally.

Question RE Famah Toure WR

For anyone who has seen practices, can you share thoughts as to WR Toure does not see much playing time. At 6'3" 218 lbs he seems to have all the physical tools to get some PT but Duff and Black are ahead of him.

This is just for people who have seen practices, not looking for speculation from those of us who do not have first hand knowledge.

Thanks

This is the Best I have Felt about this team This Year

Tech - defense fell apart and we were lucky to hang in

Washington - completely dominated us but they shot themselves in the foot

Nebraska - Defense played lights out and tackling was much improved. in the 2cd half and offense showed some ability to move. Ben Black is gonna be a good one and Duff is already on his way. We abandoned the run which we won't do in the future

We had so many opportunities and win this game 8 times out of 10. We played the entire 2cd half in Nebraska territory - Greg will get this cleaned up

Fully expect the team to rebound next week and our offense should be able to show better balance

My only complaint is Greg's utter refusal to try and return punts - there were at least 2 punts that we didn't field that rolled about 25 yards - the risk adversity is working against him
