It was probably set up to be between those two but McConnell pushing everything to the sideline kind of blew it up. But I think McConnell's internal clock was off because he froze (so as to not be called for a foul on the shot) too early. Once Thornton got by him, Mag had to step up off of Holden so that Thornton didn't have a clean look.

I had a similar thought. What player in that situation would allow themselves to drift completely out of bounds with both feet as the clock is running out? He was too casual about it.

Also, he had just been substituted in and that was his only shot of the game.

This sentence from the Ohio newspaper article pissed me off: “From in front of the Ohio State bench, Holden jumped in bounds, took a pass from Thornton, elevated and drained the shot.”

With only 3 seconds left, why is he standing out of bounds in front of his own bench to begin with?

Lastly, the OSU coach said after the game, “we practice those plays.”

This is true. Looking at the replay again, the OSU point guard makes a mistake, imo, by putting his head down and dribbling to the sideline, especially with Caleb on him.

I think Holden saw his PG getting trapped and went out of bounds to give his teammate some room to maneuver.

I think their PG was supposed to take the shot. What ensued was a series of very fortunate no-calls for OSU, with RU getting screwed by the refs.

He was probably looking to stay a bit ahead and out wide of the ball handler. They just weren’t anticipating McConnell forcing the ball handler all the way to the sideline, so Holden ended up having to go out of bounds to keep the passing lane open

The video provides 100% clear evidence that the player chose to go out of bounds voluntarily to avoid getting caught in Mag’s screen and evade potential trap from Paul who was waiting on the other side.

The open look was quite literally made possible by his decision to go out of bounds. Holden doesn’t get the ball if he doesn’t step out.

In the second half Ohio State made two 3 pointers on opposite sides of the court where the shooter was very close to the out of bounds line.The end result was 6 points in a game that was decided by one point.

Gotta admit... this ran through my head, too... especially after I heard Chris Mack:

This is the most frustrating part about it. The only reason that passing lane was open and Holden was able to step right into a shot from that spot on the floor was because he was coming from out of bounds.

Of course not. But the thing is, it’s perfectly understandable that the refs may not have observed “why” Holden went out bounds real-time. They’d obviously be more focused on the ball than assessing at that time the voluntary nature of the decision.

I feel this was a set play by their coach. The kid is out of bounds and the coach is squatting behind him and making no attempt to wave him back in bounds. It was a desperation play and it worked for them. Paul is way off of him when he was OB and couldn’t react fast enough when the kid jumped back into bounds. IMO Big 10 should question Holtman and ask him if he intentionally drew up play to dupe the refs knowing they wouldn’t likely make the call.
Further investigation is needed and possible suspension for poor sportsmanship.
