4 D 2 players in second round, let’s end the Nil excuses now

Two years ago Michigan had two guys drafted in the lottery and lost an All American to the portal. They were horrible last year and now this year are in the sweet 16. Yes, I know they have way more NIL than us but their best players came from Yale, FAU, and a PG who averaged only 6 pts at Auburn.

Pike needs to stick to his plan and bring in the right guys for him. It doesn’t matter if they averaged 5 or 15 pts ppg — just bring in dogs. That’s what Pike knows and quite honestly might be all he can afford anyway. But as someone said, those guys won’t command the big money.
If we’re not going to ever have big NIL which it sounds like we’re not for a combo of reasons (inept athletic department, unwilling fan base, no big whale donor, not coaches strong suit)

Then what we DO have needs to be spent and used on RETENTION rather than looking for replacements. If pike believes in his system of recruiting dogs and developing them and teaching defense then he needs to double down on HIS guys and do whatever he can to pay them first to keep them and fill the gaps with whatever is left

If his system and way of doing things requires 2-3 years of learning and growing then that’s the only way you’ll ever have guys that long

Everyone was pounding the table 2 days ago of look at drake with d2 guys and look at mcneese … but by the end of the day today the entire sweet 16 is LIKELY to be the cream of the P4 crop and by and large filled with programs who spent money unfortunately whether it was to build a roster or retain their own guys

Programs like Houston and Texas Tech and Tennessee have a strong culture and kept their guys, others like Alabama Florida Michigan went out and bought a team.

If we can’t win the arms race then we need to at least elevate our NIL enough to keep our own guys

Exact opposite is needed.

If we can’t afford to import a B1G caliber starting wing then what makes you think we can retain a B1G caliber starting wing.
Use Grant in 2 years as an example.

If a Grant level transfer costs X and we can’t afford that then how are we spending X to retain Grant?

Program (Pike or whoever) needs to figure out how to capitalize on 1 year of good to great play from a player (developed or transfer).
After their first good year they will likely be unaffordable to retain.

Identify guys ready to contribute significantly and exploit them for that 1 year.

I forget if your in favor of trying to raise NIL or against so honest question …

Are you asking Pike to find a player with no market who nobody else identified?

Who is against raising NIL?
My opinion is we will never raise competitive NIL. Or say in the near to medium future (never say never).
So all the posts and threads about "if we can just get NIL then...." are pointless.

To the question: Yes. The path forward for Rutgers (agnostic of coach) is finding players who are undervalued and maximizing the one year we get production from them.
That includes freshman recruits.

It's easy to "retain" Grant and Dortch when nobody else wants them.

If a B1G high level starter costs X (which we cant afford) then wouldn't Grant (if hes a high level B1g starter) also cost X to retain?
Retention isn't a cheaper option.
The talent costs the same - retention or transfer.
