I think Pike was trying to find a guard, any guard, to give the team some offense with Harper clearly struggling.

Yep prolonged acuff and jmike together was a head scratcher.

All year it’s his MO, kills his own hot hand and momentum. Does he really think the 90 sec rest ACE got is going to make a difference ? He’s 18 he wants to play every minute
JMike played 11 minutes and was the only 1 who could keep Baldwin in check

Yes, he was selling a lot of what the refs were buying tonight. Veteran moves, baiting naive rookies... then making a show for the zebras.
Derkack getting 16 minutes is a fireable offense.

Grant has earned more minutes. Acuff or JMike not so much. And all while Hayes is completely in the doghouse.

Derkack didn't show much tonight... but Williams/Acuff/Davis were brutal.
I think Pike was desperate to find guards who could do something, anything, with Harper hampered.
My biggest knock on the rotation tonight was the stretch where Bailey was sitting on the floor at the scorer's table waiting to check in, and Pike not calling a timeout to get him out there to attack the 2-3 zone. Still, with 3 more minutes on the floor, he may have fouled out even sooner.

Sommerville/Ogbole split 39 min at the 5
Grant/Martini split 40 at the 4 (20 each)
Bailey had 30 at the 3.
Harper had 32 at the 1.
That left 59 minutes at the 1/2/3 that were split amongst Derkack/Williams/Acuff/Davis.... and Derkack was the least bad of that bunch.
It always amazes me how awful Pike is at riding the momentum when we consistently watch the other teams stars play 40mins....

That is the most critical coaching error. They had no one to guard ACE and he had it going. Scored 30 points shooting 13-15 that is almost impossible. He could have had 40 but more importantly they do not go on an 11-0 run. He surrendered the lead instead of extending it. Man that is just an unconscionable mistake.
Now the 17 mindless almost unforced turnovers including 12 in the first half was also unconscionable. Lathan throws to ACE Baldwin for easy steal and he fouls him for 3 point play. Acuff and Jeremiah running the handoff and knocking down the defender hedging , for seniors that is the lowest IQ play.
We were our own worst enemy. Penn State did not win the game we kept them in it and allowed them to steal a victory.
The 2 ACE Techs cost big but he had an incredible night , 13-15 from the field scoring 30 points . Beyond tremendous.
Dylan wasn’t the same after the turned ankle . He missed the ensuing 2 foul shots and only scored 2 points the rest of the way but more importantly just stayed out top and refused to drive and attack the zone they went to. But still had a chance down 3 missed the three for the tie and the midrange down 5 that would have cut it to 1 possession again. We are just snakebit .
Getting 0 from Acuff and JMike when they both had shots was disastrous. Only 16 from Grant , Martini and Jordan not enough from the supporting cast with Dylan’s injury and struggles.
We really let this one get away and it will bite us in the ass.
Agree Derkack, Jmike, Martini, JWill, etc shouldn't be playing. Put in Jordan, Shaq and Kobe and just roll with it
Thought dercack was basically done here after the DNP the other day. Was a bit of a surprise to get 16 mins tonight.
Other than that, i think rotations should not surprise us we are at a point where staff needs to tinker and they’re trying to press the right buttons.

This was the point where he put Grant in the guard the 5 and had Sommerville guarding the 4.
Baldwin played back to back 40 minute games coming off a back injury.
Pike is really a bad coach. There is no other way to see it. He doesn't know what he is doing and his teams have no discipline,
We don't need to tinker though. We won the last two games by finally putting out a decent lineup. It's like as soon as the team has any success Pike has a mandate that he MUST play the net negatives regardless of what's happening on the floor.
Grant only playing 19 minutes when he's been so good is absurd. Should be 25-30 every night.
Martini playing 20 is too much when he only hit one shot.
Derkack should never play 16 minutes under any circumstance, even 10 is too much.
The gameplan was awful tonight. The only reason for a close game was due to Ace's talent, and he gets taken out at the most important time of the game and PSU goes on a huge run.
This coach assembled a bad team with two pro's and does everything possible to hurt their chances. Enough of this.
But some how we’re deep enough for a 10 man rotation. I miss 2019-2021 when we ran like a 7-8 man at most.
This is Pike's legacy. You can scream it until the end of time, it's who he is as a coach. Just like Schiano isn't going to change his ways at this point in life, neither is Pikiell.

We were just snakebit on this one with Harper's rolled ankle. I think we got to stop him from going back in when he is hurt. He sat on bench sick to death... he tried to play nearly sick to death. When he rolled his ankle.. take him out immediately.. let someone else take the foul shots....
Yes.. we need Harper to play to win.. but we need a healthy Harper. We could have had a loss here with Harper not stressing that ankle the rest of the game and possibly injuring himself worse.
We were playing fairly well and Pike makes multiple substitutions before the 15 minute mark. Considering we weren't applying full court pressure, the guys on the court could not have been that tired. So why?
We didn't put out much different of a lineup from the prior two games, but some rotation changes were driven by performance, fouls, and injuries.
C - Last two games was 19.5/19.5 between Sommerville/Ogbole, and this was 22/17 with Sommerville having a stronger game.
PF - Last two games were 24/15.5 between Grant/Martini, and this was 20/20... probably too much Martini
Bailey dropped from 37 to 30, partly due to foul trouble and partly to twisting his ankle. Should have had 32-33, though, got stuck trying to check in.
Harper went from 31.5 to 32, basically the same, but his performance was way down.
Other guards - Williams dropped from 23.5 to 17, driven by turnovers and fouls. Davis/Acuff still combined for 26 min, but Acuff so 3.5 more than Davis this game.... they combined for 9 points vs UCLA, 0 vs Nebraska, and 0 tonight.
The only big change was Derkack taking on extra minutes, largely driven by foul trouble from Williams and Bailey, and he ended up being our 2nd best performing guard behind Harper.
In his presser, Pike mentioned E being hurt
Perhaps this was done to protect Sommerville from getting his 5th.

Ok. Why? He doesn’t know that he needs his best player on the floor up 53-50. They overcame 14 turnovers at that point and had the lead. Why do you not go for the kill ? We have never had the talent of Dylan and ACE . Why? Why? Why? There is 10:15 left and a TV timeout coming at the under 8. Instead , Acuff takes 2 bad threes without ball movement , Lathan misses wide open 13 footer and Dylan misses a deep 3 again without good ball movement and it is now 59-53 Penn State before he calls a timeout and the damage is done.
Despite the great ACE dunks followed by techs at 4:43 left that instead of down 6 defending go down 10 after tech foul shots and layup. Then the second tech after he dunked and cut it to 3 at 75-72 with 21 seconds left. Absolutely killers.
But after first tech and going down 10 we get it down to 2 points with 1:30 left and still had a chance. Dylan just didn’t have it.
We are snake bit. Really hits you in the gut because it really was a winnable game and a 3 game winning streak and the buzz would build for Saturday against Michigan State has gone south.
