A lot of questionable player substitutions tonight

JMike played 11 minutes and was the only 1 who could keep Baldwin in check

took 2 shots and had 0 turnovers,
And JWill played 16 minutes and had 5 turnovers, and only fell down once. The amazing thing is that JMike was such an instrumental part of our first win against PSU the way he covered Baldwin, and he only gets 11 minutes tonight. Pike's an idiot.

Ok. Why? He doesn’t know that he needs his best player on the floor up 53-50. They overcame 14 turnovers at that point and had the lead. Why do you not go for the kill ? We have never had the talent of Dylan and ACE . Why? Why? Why? There is 10:15 left and a TV timeout coming at the under 8. Instead , Acuff takes 2 bad threes without ball movement , Lathan misses wide open 13 footer and Dylan misses a deep 3 again without good ball movement and it is now 59-53 Penn State before he calls a timeout and the damage is done.
Despite the great ACE dunks followed by techs at 4:43 left that instead of down 6 defending go down 10 after tech foul shots and layup. Then the second tech after he dunked and cut it to 3 at 75-72 with 21 seconds left. Absolutely killers.
But after first tech and going down 10 we get it down to 2 points with 1:30 left and still had a chance. Dylan just didn’t have it.
We are snake bit. Really hits you in the gut because it really was a winnable game and a 3 game winning streak and the buzz would build for Saturday against Michigan State has gone south.
None of Pikes team have ever had a killer instinct, must be the players.

Was wondering if Pike might try Hayes against the zone with Harper hurting and the guards doing nothing. Acuff looks bad again

Pike had another classic timeout after a made bucket when our team is on a run. I absolutely hate it and he does it all the time. Then waits too long for a timeout when PSU is a run and we can't score

Pike and Schiano both share bad feel for timeouts

Burning our last timeout at 2:26 after a bucket while Penn State was really struggling against our press was a TERRIBLE move.
Bad coaching! We had massive momentum and had them frazzled against the press. This TO changed the entire game(second moment behind pulling ace when we were leading and he just hit a big shot).
Both events changed the momentum to PSUs favor. This is typical of EVERY Pike team I have watched over the years that he is just not a situational coach.
Seen it happen way too often and I really struggle seeing Pike breaking through his ceiling.

We’re so stupid. The first time we played PSU, Jmike on Baldwin from the start worked. So what do we do? We keep the same starting lineup against Nebraska because we won that game. So annoying. Go back to what worked against PSU the first time. It’s mind numbing. Martini zero minutes last time we played PSU, last night 20 minutes. We played 10 guys significant minutes last night. That’s too deep a rotation and coach who doesn’t have a feel for his team. I give up

Stop! He kept no on in check this game or the the last. JMike can not play at this level. Great young man, great attitude, great energy, Not a Power 5 guard

Pike should also read his players body language.
Dylan was obviously hurting to the point he was non-impactful…Get him out!
I’ve seen injured and sick guys play through pain on sheer adrenaline and refusal to lose mentality, they can be a huge inspiration to the team especially if they are your best player.
Dylan tried his very best, I give him credit for attempting to play…. Unfortunately his body language was awful, he moved like an elderly man with bad posture…. Gotta take him out

Its almost to the point where he should put the names of the guys on the roster other Ace and DH in a hat and just call #'s every five minutes of who will be in there. Big picture he is responsible for the choices he has with this roster. I can sympathize with him that he probably doesn't know what to expect from one game to the next.

PSU goes zone you would think one of Martini, Acuff or even Hayes would have an opportunity to shine but not last night. Acuff just can't move enough to be helpful. I know he is recovering but he also looks a little heavy to me. Lathan was better last night but the floor was pretty low after Nebraska and yet he got equal minutes to Ogbole who seemed active again. We got the bad Jwill last night.

I guess DH at about 60% (I think I am being generous) is better than the other choices a 100%? I assume PSU figured out at some point he was impaired thus he value as a decoy was less. Based on JMike and bad JWill being the other options its hard to quibble. Its amazing that Derkack is our PG at times at this level.

Derkack getting 16 minutes is a fireable offense.

I'm sure he's a nice kid but he just cannot be on the court.
There is a girl on my daughter's varsity HS team who I noticed has been getting more minutes than she should despite her turnover per minute proficiency. I asked her about it and she said "Yeah her parents called the coach and complained about her playing time."
Maybe papa Derkack made a call?

Martini has played well against UCLA and Nebraska so no issue with him playing yesterday, however if he's not hitting shots you need to cut those down and give more to Grant.

Rutgers up 3 at 9 minute mark and he takes out Ace.

11-0 run by Penn State follows.

Ride your horses !

Ace Baldwin with bum back played all 40 minutes tonight.
THIS ^

Your season is basically over and youre still practicing minutes restrictions with your 2 one and dones

I have not understood this since the Princeton loss why a coach who knows he gets one year and has one opportunity to do anything is still making sure they get rest for the "late season run"

Dylan and Ace should be playing 35-36 minutes each a game pending foul trouble

At some point the question has to be asked.....maybe Ace and Dylan are to blame too.

They are 40% of our lineup. For the year our defense has been terrible.

On offense...yes they make shots...and at an acceptable/good efficiency. Are they making others around them better. When they make cuts, when they set screens, or when they come off screens are they doing it at 100%? These little things are very important.

No no it really doesn’t.
I don’t know how many times it needs to be said. There are too many players on the roster who are not B1G players. It’s that simple. Guys will have flashes (Martini against Nebraska), but that’s it. It won’t be consistent. You know how I know Ace and Dylan’s are not part of the problem. Because the games Dylan was sick, not only did we not win, but we weren’t competitive.

Ace/Dylan setting screens or making cuts has nothing to do with lack of rim protection or bringing in players than are not B1G transfers. Stop searching for answers that don’t exist

Just a completely pathetic coach. Guy goes out and recruits an offense only team and doesn't know how to coach offense. Losing three straight years and missing the tournament each year is on him. If knight wasn't here we would have literally nothing to watch and we don't have anything on horizon

Agreed. Simply put there isn't anyone on the roster besides Ace or Dylan who would start for another B1G team. More damming however is that aside from perhaps our young and inexperienced "bigs" that traditionally take time to develop, I'm not sure anyone else would even see meaningful minutes as a backup.

Its been mentioned here before ad nauseum, but with the onset the transfer portal era I'm not so sure Pike's method of coaching up and developing a defense first attitude is capable of bearing much fruit anymore.

That makes it easy and fits your narrative.

We are 126th in adjusted defensive efficiency. Are we going to not include them in that metric?

Pikiell does this WAY TOO OFTEN

I noticed in the game against Nebraska he took out Harper when Harper was heating up followed by a Nebraska run
Again... WHAT THE F*** are we resting these guys for anymore

We have to go 9-3 or 10-2 the last 12 games to have ANY prayer

Harper and Ace should be playing 35+ minutes every game until the season is officially over and we cannot reach the tournament

Until then every game is must win and you have to coach as such

If that means some feelings get hurt and Jmike, Martini, Acuff play a lot less SO BE IT your dang job is on the line

Ace and Dylan are not in the shape required to play 36 minutes per game and be strong down the stretch when you need them the most.

there is no down the stretch where you need them the most if youre not contending

A) at the end of the season

B) at he end of the game when youre down 10 with 2:30 to go

No, but Ace and Dylan don’t play the center position and neither were an Ivy League transfer asked to play the 4 in the B1G. Are we just going to ignore the first 15-16 games and how we got destroyed in the paint?

no.

There are 115 B1G payers that have played over 40% of team minutes.

When looking at effective FG%
Dylan is 47th
Ace is 51st

When looking at free throw rate
Dylan is 36th
Ace is 82nd

When looking at assist rate
Dylan is 7th
Ace is 103rd

When looking at offensive rating
Dylan is 46th
Ace is 80th

Usage
Dylan is 3rd
Ace is 5th

To me this is a team problem and not everyone but Ace and Dylan.

Stop with the efficiency numbers. Those things are so skewed and we run awful offensive sets. We have no other true/consistent scoring options so the two of them are forced to be high volume shooters. Seriously, the fact that you bring this up after Ace shot 13-15 is laughable. Dylan had an off night and we had no one else step up in his place. Also, three of our 4 worst games this year were when Harper was sick. Lack of depth is our issue. It’s not difficult to understand.
Cooper Flagg averages 19.2 ppg but his offensive efficiency rating is lower than Sion James on Duke who averages 7.5 ppg.

Btw, guess who ranks 2nd in SEC offensive rating in advanced stats…Yep you guessed it, Cliff Omuruyi

Yes there teammates are awful! If you surrounded them with competent teammates let alone actual good Big ten players what would there numbers look like?

When you play with guys who are left WIDE open so they can double and triple Ace/Dylan their numbers are going to take a hit.

This is simply in Pike and his inability to identify talent and build a competent roster. Will look past him waiting half the season to play Grant or bench JMike.

Who do you want them "assisting" the ball to or sharing the game with exactly.

You have black holes at times in the post with Ogbole and Sommerville who at teams are either unwilling or incapable post passers

You have YMCA level 3 point shooters in Dercack and Davis who are NO THREAT outside the arc and are left wide open all the time for a reason... and yet they fire every time they are left wide open

You have Acuff and Martini who both at times are capable from the outside but one cannot create his own shot if covered and the other seems just a step slow

And you have Williams who cant stay on his two feet and wants to show he can make an NBA move like Dylan and Ace the other half o the time

Citing % and ratings is unfair to both

The answer is somewhere in between.

You say we run awful sets. Maybe, just maybe, some of the players are not running them at 100%. Jogging to places, not setting good screens and not using them properly.

Both Dylan And Ace are definitely guilty here

We don’t run sets consistently! Pike is a high pick and roll iso guy with the Big and PG! (Ran it with Myles n Cliff etc). It’s frustrating that we don’t run more for our shooters or low post players.

If we want to run pick and roll then you do it with Dylan and Ace up top! You have two shooters opposite of each other in the deep corners and Lathan/Ogbole in the dunker spot down low.

Force them to choose between Dylan and Ace and when they double kick to the corner and flash to the foul line. If they don’t double then go to work.

If doubled then the Shooter shoots or if rotations by the D is sound they pass to the flashing player who shoots the foul line jumper or if the big steps out to defend then you dump down to the big in the dunker spot.

Rinse wash repeat

Are we giving Harper a pass for coming in to camp and never getting back to shape. I know there was an injury, but I think there was ample time and alternative ways to be in top shape.

After having offseason surgery and then getting hit with an illness 12 games into the season when he was playing like the best player in the country?

Where is Pikes strength and conditioning program?

I think you may enjoy trolling

How many players in college basketball are playing with a NBA lottery pick? They each are.

I don't understand what's happening with the rotations. Like, I understand grant coming out because he kept getting abused but was he actually guarding their 7ft center? Guard play was horrible last night, even the announcer said Acuff doesn't have the foot speed to defend, yet he remained in the game despite not offering anything offensively. when Columbia played zone ace shot them out of it. Why not go to that foul line action with him last night? Even with Dylan being hobbled, could have won this one.

His answer of Derkack was puzzling. I agree 100% using Ace in that zone.

🤔 I don't think I've seen ace and Dylan run the pick and roll together yet. Smh

Everyone wants to criticize the coach. I agree it’s his fault for putting this poor roster together. But blaming him for minor substitutions here and there? Acuff jwill derkak and jmike are all equally bad if we are being honest. I mean he has to play someone. Its not like any of those guys are clearly better than the other

I am going to have Thibs call Pike and set him straight on how many minutes his best guys should be playing.
