I hope that his guy can get it done because this hire has eerie similarities to both the Anderson and Shea hires. Anderson because they are both well respected coordinators with no recruiting bona fides and we saw how horrific a recruiter Anderson turned out to be - albeit he had the worst facilities in D1 to work with. Shea because like Ash he had a very high profile Coach pushing hard to get him that job. When someone needs that to get a job rather than relying on the body of his work, red flags are raised very high. We saw the result with Shea - also a non- recruiter. I fear that this is a bad hire but I hope I'm wrong.

Hey, go figure, your whining. Where have you been to talk about wrestling, soccer, all the good stuff that's been going on? I assume your brother Manny will start a thread, soon, whining as well.

Come on my man smiles, smiles, smiles! No more flood, let's all rejoice in our new hire, Kumbaya!!!

Hey nuts - I've had several posts about soccer and wrestling so why don't you shove it and get out of my face and get a life. This is a horrible hire by every measure - a non- recruiter with no local ties. Couldn't be worse and you should expect to see a lot more posts like this so get used to it.

Remember anyone is better than Flood in recruiting. We should get at least 2-3 4 stars a year

Agree.

Bill Walsh put in a good word with Shea who did not even know where Rutgers was. Shea a great offensive genius who could not recruit NJ nor anywhere else.

For all the people who criticized flood for not getting top 10 nj recruits but love this hire will you also criticize Ash if/when he gets 0 top 10 recruits?

Anderson was never a coordinator he was an Oline coach. Plus have you ever heard the man speak a wet dish towel has more personality.

lol I haven't had anything to say about your tired, whiny self, in a ages, so relax you damn crabby whiner. Can't wait to see this guy prove you wrong!

In this age of social media and what not I don't think the HC needing to be from the area matters as much. You have spots on the staff that can fill those gaps. We also didn't have guy with a national champ ring on his finger to sell either. Does Mendenhall have any roots in UVA? Or Mullen in Mississippi. All over the country there are coaches who coach in places they had no ties to beforehand. Some do some don't, I don't think it's absolutely necessary. Just get the staff right.

BTW while Gary Waters wasn't a world beater he was by far the best guy we've had at HC in all our recent MBB attempts and he had no ties. What was his mistake? Bringing his entire staff with him. So like I said get the staff right, it's okay if the HC isn't from here get the position coaches and recruiting guys who know their thing in the area. If we had stuck with that Waters/FHJ experiment a little longer we might have been okay.

So a major criteria for hire should be local ties to schools that are not sending players to RU. Just win and all will work out.

Is Alvarez Bill Walsh. Very risky hire. Hope I am wrong but not warm and fuzzy about this

Sure, I would criticize him if he can't get any top NJ recruits. But I believe he'll be smart enough to make sure he employs a few coaches who can recruit NJ and help him land a few big dogs. Need to keep expectations real though and understand we wouldn't be getting 7 of the top 10 either regardless of who we hired. Remember, in the 2012 class everyone likes to bring up we got 5 of the top 10 in NJ.

I also think 10 is an arbitrary number and 11-20 in NJ is also important to our future success (particularly when it comes to depth).

Wish we could just ban these threads immediately. I'm against censorship but I'm starting to see the benefits...

As I stated before on this board, Ash's resume is not as strong as Schiano's was in 2000. Not that this means GS was my first choice. But I guess nobody better wanted this job...As with all RU coaches and we have had many in the modern (Big East/AAC/B1G) we die hard fans can only hope...

Can you please point me to the resume item on GSs resume of a National Championship defense?
Please show your work.

He can hire a staff with local recruiting ties....and I hope he will. Quite frankly, all the coaches we had with great recruiting ties couldnt keep enough of the big name kids in state anyway....upwards from here.

Not having Jersey ties is so overrated. Did each and every recruiter from USC east and west have Jersey ties? Iowa? OSU? Michgan? Tennessee? Miami? UNC? Pitt? Wisconsin? Stanford? No, they had on the field success.

Let's see what Ash can do when he sits in the living rooms and flashes that Nat'l Championship ring.

The only thing Schiano had on his resume that Ash didn't was three years in the NFL as a defensive assistant. But Ash has five years of P5 experience as a defensive coordinator (Schiano had 2) so it really balances out. At worst, the resumes are comparable.

What was Jim Mcelwain's connection to Florida? I don't see any " big time" recruiting accolades as an assistant under Saban ( or under John L. smith for that matter). What was Mullen's connection to Mississippi? Was he known as a big time recruiter? I can go on if needed.

I'll take a guy who knows how to coach and let the chips fall. I wanted a guy who was a respected OC or DC. The fact I always felt our defense was going to be competitive was what I liked about Greg. Give me Someone who is going to bring a working knowledge of one side of the ball.

Mullen, Strong, Herman, Andersen, Whittingham, Doc Holliday, Everett Withers....the Urban coaching tree is really hot. I am optimistic.

We will know what we have and will be concerned.

That's the thing about Flood. You couldn't say he was an expert on defense or the offense. He had no expertise. That's unheard of for a head coach.

Guys this is our next coach, let's get behind him at least until he gives us a reason not to. This guy has great pedigree for a reason. I can't wait to see what he can do. Go coach ASH!

Not particularly happy with this hire. Really wanted an experienced head coach, with Schiano as my top choice, but I also would've been happy with some of the other names being talked about (not Golden though). But I'll support Ash 110% once he's our coach and hope he can get it done. Just not that confident he can. Maybe also a little cranky over the horrible hoops loss today at the RAC to Seton Hall - left with 8 min left, which I rarely do.
