In a sport that has a gazillion delays of the game for commercials, erroneously called "media timeouts," I get a little tired of the announcers whining about the refs checking to make sure they've made the calls properly. I particularly love when they recommend that they should only get so much time to do so. How about running some commercials during them and getting rid of the commercial timeouts?

This is a joke right? If you've been watching tonight's games had easy calls that the refs reviewed for way too long.
Tv timeouts are part of the deal for you to sit on your couch and watch on free tv

The refs checking calls makes the game fair. I have no problem with them taking the time to get it right. That's part of the game. The TV timeouts are simply a vehicle to put more money into the pockets of ESPN and the NCAA. Last I checked, I paid for ESPN.

Both procedures slow down the game. One is in the interests of the game and the other is not. Never hear the announcers complaining about the TV timeouts, nor calling them what they really are instead of a euphemism.

Umm these announcers work for the tv stations. Stations make money and pay their announcers based on these tv timeouts. Why the hell would announcers ciriticize who pays them?

The end of the UConn - Miss St game had a check the time at about 6 secs with a ball going OB. Took maybe 10 secs to restart the game.
Why isn't there a sideline official sitting by the scorer just to watch the clock in those situations ?

Of course they aren't going to criticize the TV timeouts. They pay their salary. Nobody's arguing that. What I'm arguing is that they whine about the game being delayed when they delay it far longer than the referees. And their delays aren't based on getting calls right.

The announcers in both games were bad, and were unfairly critical of the refs. Refs weren't great in either game, but weren't awful, either.

That is of course their primary purpose. But the TV timeouts, coming at their prescribed intervals, are now part of the game. Coaches gameplan with the TV timeouts in mind. To pre-empt a TV timeout because it isn't "needed" due to a prior unscheduled stoppage, would be like pre-empting the two minute warning in the NFL. Somebody could be unfairly advantaged, and somebody could be unfairly disadvantaged.

If you got rid of them, then the game planning would change accordingly. Same with the two-minute warning. Soccer gets along fine without commercial timeouts.

Just resorted to DVRing the games and starting to watch recording about an hour or more into announced starting time. Game will start at least 15 minutes after alleged starting time then I skip all of the commercials, extended officiating reviews, all of halftime nonsense and I finish just about same time as live feed. The only way to go for games like this.

I understand your sentiment of getting the call correct but hear me out...

In the Oregon game, they trailed UNC by 1 with UNC going to the line. There was only 5.8 seconds left and Oregon had NO timeouts left.

The refs took two minutes to review the clock to which they finally decided to add a HALF OF A SECOND to the clock. Oregon, who was out of timeouts, got to huddle and discuss their plan for what to do off a make or miss while also ICING the UNC shooter.

THAT IS EFFING NUTS TO ME.

This. Why these refs take so long is beyond me. I am surprised cbs/turner just doesn't cut away to a couple commercials when they go to review

Apparently, Oregon used the time to tell their guys not to block out on the rebound from the free throw!

I agree the refs took too long to come up with that decision, but if Oregon only had a half minute, they could have gotten all the huddling in they needed, though.

My beef is that the timeouts and extended half time adds roughly a half hour to the game. The refs add maybe 5-8 minutes on that, and the announcers whine like mad about it.

Good approach!

I do that for a lot of football games as they are played way early in the morning here in NZ. Can really get through a game quickly and still not miss anything.

But, for games like this, where I'm up and watching, I've got internet live gambling available. So have to watch in real time. It is amazing how people overreact to scores in games.

I do this for Selection Sunday. Those long commercials breaks between the bracket announcements got to be too much
