Any chance that Rettig

Based seeing him play a few times last year, Spring game, and 1 half of football this year. If you need more, then you are not paying attention. The first throw he made, which Caroo, came back to catch was grossly underthrown. That ball should have been much higher and dropping down into the endzone, where Carroo can run under it. Instead it needed a great play from the WR to prevent the interception. Laviano wound up to throw that ball, and it barely made 40 yards.

Laviano's pass went from his own 35 down to the NSU's 12 yard line, and he did it without putting everything he had into it.

53 yards is not "barely 40 yards" and he did it relatively easily. Yes he underthrew it, but not because that's all he could throw. He Clearly didn't put his all into it. Probably misjudged Caroo's speed to get down the field as fast as he can.

Stop with the BS that Laviano has a weak arm. The kid can throw the ball 60-65 yards down field.

This thread epitomizes the insecurity that RU fans have. Already worried about a Kid transferring out who just transferred in because he did not get named starter after his first RU game against Norfalk State. If any kid decides to go elsewhere then so be it....next man up. You cant be an effective coach, manager, supervisor, leader etc if you are held hostage to people under you wanting to quit or leave. Find other people who want to be there.

LOL!
I said, "would," where I probably should be saying, could. Ohio State is very strong, but still a College football team, which houses teens typically 18, 19 year olds, and some at 20 or 21. But, still too young to be perfect or unstoppable. To be optimistic as opposed to pessimistic is a trait I hold very dear to my heart. Rutgers Al, is on the other hand in lala land(luv u Al), yet he is great for RU!
We need more RU fans that predict undefeated seasons, than those who predict 5 and 5 seasons. i.e., Fan, from the word Fanatic!

But you are only optimistic on your own terms. In this case you are optimistic only with HR as the QB and not with Laviano.

I think HR had a great game and I want to see more of him out there. But the classic mistake that people make when evaluating QB play is basing it only on what they see (what the QB does) and do not include what they don't see (what the QB doesn't do).

Rettig has a strong arm no doubt and (especially) the pass to Grant was outstanding and a forebearer of potential things to come. However his mechanics are not even and he is throwing off his back foot. The first scamble play where he ran for a first down - his hesitation caused him to miss a wide open Patton for a potential TD. Also on that play against a better/faster defense - it likely would not be a First Down. His decision making seemed pretty sound and his progressions/spreading the ball around also makes one want to see more. However against a superior rush - his hesitations would be much more pronounced and potentially cause more mistakes.

The more I watch the tape and highlights Laviano is growing on me. He only threw 4 passes so obviously there needs to be more evidence of how he will perform going forward. In the underthrown pass to Caroo - I first thought it was just a bad throw, however it might have very well been a designed "back-shoulder" type underthrow....still undecided on this. The 2nd TD pass to Caroo was a difficult play for a right handed QB - rollout strong left, turn and throw in motition with pressure coming before getting nailed. It helped that Caroo was wide open - but the throw seemed pure. The screen play showed nice timing/touch which is often overlooked. Most importantly - he did not seem to miss anything. Time of course will tell on this with more plays against WSU.

Just my thoughts. If may be that Rettig has more upside - but the gap just does not seem as apparent as you appear to make it in this thread.

Rettig would clearly have preferred things to be (at this moment) different... but think about where he is - he is the guy who has to have his helmet in his hands at all times - the team is one game into a 12 game season & he is one play away from being on the field.

Oh maybe the graduated-senior transfer path could be a consideration but that involves a bunch of if's and is down the road.... and if it is still an easily utilized option.

Fundamentally Rettig left LSU because they converted to an offense that was not a match with his pro-style QB strengths ... neither he nor they were going to re-engineer themselves - that is not the situation here.

Since he has played his year ... and a regular transfer would force Rettig to sit a year - and as he has already utilized his red shirt - he would have to just simply burn a legitimate year of eligibility - and that would end up leaving him with only one year ... (yeah maybe he could cobble some 'hardship' rationale - but it would be doubtful )

The only way it would seem at all possible would be if there was some deep divide between him & the staff - resulting in him being exiled to 3rd string - really really not at all likely!

As the competition gets stiffer and stiffer you will see both strengths and weaknesses in Laviano. Do I think there may be an arm strength issue beyond 55-60 yards maybe? If the QB's are evenly matched a host of other BS comes into play in picking a starter. Who has respect in the locker room? Who put in the time and effort looking at film and memorizing the playbook? In my opinion politics have a way to creep into every facet of life including college football. To create dissention against the starting QB (Laviano) because you want to see another player will undermine the coaching staff and ultimately hurt the program. Give him a chance.

It is a struggle every time he throws the ball, where HR delivers quickly and with little effort. I don't need a year to realize the difference in the two. But, it doesn't stop there, progressive reads are a QB's forte, some can do it naturally(see Russo), others have trouble finding secondary receivers. HR again excels at this. But, needs playing time to actually become second nature. That will never happen on the bench. Laviano is adequate, and will probably get us 7 wins this year. But, HR would have gotten us much more, and next year we would be looking at a Conference Championship. That is the difference.

"Laviano wound up to throw that ball, and it barely made 40 yards"

Knightsof Chrome........Stop making things up to support your case. The ball was underthrown, but it traveled 52 yards not barely 40. That's a big difference.

Not to mention basing a case on one throw is not a good argument.

If rettig doesn't unseat laviano this year then with rescigno, dare and russo, he won't have a chance. In that case he should transfer if he wants to play FB as a starting QB. Alternatively he could just finish up his degree and move on with life.

It was caught on the 12 Yard line and it was a 55 Yard TD. Hence the pass was only 43 yards from the LOS.
A wide open WR should not have to come back ... Badly underthrown.

We can debate the semantics of how far it was thrown, and yes it was under thrown, but it still is not necessarly mean that it due to lack of arm strength. He might have just misjudged the throw.

He took a deep 10 Step Drop and released the ball from the RU 35 yard line. Caroo caught the ball at the NSU 12 Yard Line. That means the ball traveled 53 Yards in the Air. You can review the youtube link from RVision to verify if you want - the play is at the 3:45 mark. Caroo had about a 1 step separation from the CB...so while he was open, he was not WIDE open. Caroo also had a significant height advantage over the CB - so underthrowing a ball/putting a ball up in Man-Man coverage with your best offensive player who can adjust to the ball against a smaller CB is actually not a bad play. We will know more about his arm when Laviano throws more long balls.

It was thrown 53 yards in the air (own 35 yard line to opponent 12 yard line)...with not a lot of effort. Like I said, it was underthrown, but not badly underthrown, or it would have been picked.

That would have been picked off by any B1G Secondary Defense.
Not some lower level FCS team cornerback. Not trying to be nasty to NSU.

And how the heck do you know it was throw with little effort ? Are you Chris L. QB coach. Please.

How do I know? Because I have eyes.... and can watch the replay of the game highlights.

That Knights guy is so far up his own ass. Oh he can tell who is going to be the better QB based off of a few data points? How lucky we are to have him on our message board site! And to think, he could be making hundreds of thousands if not millions of dollars effortlessly scouting the QB position for NFL franchises who consistently have some of the top experts whiff on the most difficult projected position despite dozens of hours of tape review and assessment. And yet despite all of this, he can conclusively tell who the better QB is based on a spring scrimmage, some end of game garbage time play last year, and a game against a FCS team.

Bravo.

Do you live in some alternate universe? I know give your opinions zero credibility. Caroo is one of the best receivers in the B1G. Putting him one-on-one versus any B1G corner-back is a recipe for disaster for that corner-back's team. Coming back for the ball actually gives Caroo an advantage.

Even if it were another receiver, the chances of an interception are far less than 100% and probably favor our receiver. A B1G corner-back would have been more likely to break up the pass, but the situation is still very much in favor of the receiver.

Yeah right.
Let's see how under thrown passes by Laviano do against OSU and Michigan St. and Wisconsin.Whether it's Caroo or anyone else is getting picked.
You live in a lala Universe. Smarten up.

Because it's a forgone conclusion that they will all be great QBs, even though none of them has played in a college game?
