To the RU bullpen. After watching the early regional and super-regional games and the first two games of the CWS (both won in the bottom of the 9th) , it is abundantly clear that relief pitching is a premium that very few teams have. While the RU bullpen was particularly egregious, it is amazing that even at the highest levels, finding a true closer is no easy matter.

I was saying it all season long: it wasn't our pitching killing us, it was our hitting. We simply did not perform well in clutch situations the way we did in '22. Pitching wasn't great, especially relief, but it never was expected to be.

As an aside, my son's travel team (from MA) played in a summer tournament a few years ago at RU run by the former coach, when the kids were 16, 17, high school sophomores and juniors. We had a very good team. One of the kids on our team is now a reliever for Wake Forest, our catcher went to Dartmouth and was drafted by the Yankees and is now doing well in the minors. Other kids on the team went on to Div I baseball. The kids were all eager to play college ball and explore options. Our team's coach said the RU coach never approached him, never asked any questions, never followed up. Which was very strange given the level of talent that was right before his eyes.
