Riley and Ball seem remorseful and embarrassed. Hill just seemed like he wanted this to be over and just read his statement. It appeared that Ball was close to choking up.
Coach Alford announced that they are suspended indefinitely from the team. They will not travel with the team, at some point they will be allowed to join team workouts, practices and meetings.

Amazing the two Florida guys "get it" while the academic doesn't have a clue! Doesn't hold much promise for institutional penalty from UCLA, to the three thieves.
Of course they should lose their scholarships, that's what an honorable school of higher education would do. UCLA has never been that, so probably a 3 game suspension and a mandatory ethics class.

They are not regular students. They are basketball players at UCLA.
It's not like being a basketball player at Rutgers when you walk into a group of students having something to eat and offer them tickets to a game and the students look at them like: who are you?
It's UCLA, people know who they are.
When they walk around campus, people know who they are. When they go into class, people know who they are. Some UCLA student receiving a scholarship because they are a brilliant mathematician, for example, aren't as recognized. Maybe a half dozen baseball players & a dozen football payers at UCLA are.
I’d choke up too if I smelled their shit stained underwear after they were caught... sure nice to make it a “aw shucks” moment for these troubled youths from a disadvantaged background...If it were other students not affiliated with a high profile BB school they would still be in Beijing.
OK, didn't want to go here....but......UCLA students are all self absorbed, enabled, better than you type students, that actually look down at scholarship players that are only there because of the sport. I know that because I worked there. So, you sir don't know what you are talking about.
You didn't write anything that disproves what I wrote. People on campus know who the basketball players are. I didn't say they also look up to them.
Interesting to note that UCLA football players caught stealing last year got kicked out of school.

As big of an ahole as the Ball elder is, his kids seem pretty grounded. After hearing the press conference, I don't think they should be expelled, even though there is a precedent. Maybe sitting out the year, allowing them to practice, is punishment enough.

FWIW people know who the players are at RU too .. the ones who don't are the same students at other colleges who don't know sports/who the players are.

Maybe this isn’t the same thing, but I belong to several clubs. They all have a “Code of conduct”. When the code of conduct is violated, you are out. Simple as that.
Issue is what would UCLA do to "Joe Student" if he/she was busted for shoplifting? Add to that the world wide exposure given to UCLA as a result of these bozos. Full year suspension at a minimum. In the real world, loss of scholie & immediate expulsion.
Ever been on welfare? How you can equate that to someone getting a college scholarship is pretty ignorant.
This story reminds me of a story from "The Ticket Out"- a book about the greatest high school baseball team ever- (Darryl Strawberry's). One of the best players got drafted and got on the bus to the minor leagues. On his way from the bus to the field, he stopped at a Woolworth, shoplifted some things and got caught. Right to jail. Baseball career was over before it started.
