As Rutgers punches bowl bid, Greg Schiano earns bonus: Here’s how much

Delusional perhaps.
But isn't that the point of being a fan?
At best it's a little delusional - nobody is expecting us to win the Big Ten.

I would say the "pro-Schiano" crowd who constantly says "Rutgers has a cheap fanbase, crap facilities/no fieldhouse, dumb management who can't be trusted to make coaching hires. Stop expecting more than being happy to just make a bowl" are the malcontents.

If the program is in such a sad state then run to another program with better potential like Schiano did the first time?

I would say that there is not really much of a "pro-Schiano" crowd. It may be a few posters but for the most part what you are really seeing is posters put in a position of defending Schiano due to the constant and overt negativity expressed by some on this board. Most are defending him because they have come to the realization that he is not going anywhere for a while due to his contract situation.....so there is no sense continuing to whine over spilled milk so to say. So in a sense they are choosing to see the positives vs the negatives.

Further, I don't really get the whole "good fan" / "bad fan" arguments across both sides. Most of the fans who are spending inordinate amounts of time on this board are likely really into RU Football to a greater extent than most common or bandwagon type fans. To that extent they are all "good" fans regardless of how they choose to root for RU. Not sure why fans point fingers at one another when we really all have little to no impact on what goes on in a game, in coaching decisions or even admin decisions. Money talks when it comes to college sports and little else......telling someone that they accept mediocrity and that's the reason that RU will never be any good ....or conversely that they are a bad fan because they think Schiano needs to be replaced.......means relatively nothing towards impacting RU football.

This.

I am neither pro-Schiano nor anti-Schiano. Yet I find myself compelled to speak out against some of the highly negative and often irrational commentary some people post about him. Thing is, I'm not so much defending GS as I am defending reality.

Haters and worshipers alike are willing to abdicate all sense of reality in advancing their narratives about the guy.

I'm not really seeking credibility as this is just a fan board. Just some insight however - when the Schiano return rumor mill and ensuing hire was first discussed on this board - my reaction was that he would bring respectability back to RU that was lost in the Ash era. However the concerns over his getting RU to a higher "ceiling" in the BIG were valid based on GS 1.0. I'm guessing that many feel the same way. As much as you might want to make everything black and white and either have to be all-in or all-out on Schiano.......there is middle ground especially given that he will likely be here for at least 2-3 more years if not more.

That's an unprovable assertion. It's your opinion, and that's fine.

But objectively speaking, nobody knows what would happen with NIL funding at RU with some other coach. It's not possible to measure it because he's the only NIL-era coach we've had. And since nobody can predict the future, nobody can say what might happen with coaches that come after Schiano.
not my opinion, my personal fact.

If one doesn't think Schiano is made for this job , you don't know NJ or what it takes to have success at RU. By the way the people who support RU football financialy Love him.
The “ppl” love him so much and financially support RU football but won’t give him the money needed to compete ? The schiano apologists creed!

One of the Greatest school in the country
Unbelievable location
Media capital
He’s a top 25 paid national coach
His OC and DC are paid top 10
His development and support staff are highest paid in big ten
He played no one of significance all year
Easiest Big Ten Schedule ever
Way to out perform Greg!

There's a few big donors (Powers, Garutti, Brown, Plofker), but quite honestly (and I say this respectfully, as they've all donated much more than I have, and I'm extremely grateful for their generosity), in the big picture of college fb, what they've donated is peanuts vis a vis other programs, and certainly not enough to justify keeping GS should he either not be fit for the job (due to performance) or another viable option becomes available

Guess what, as I've always said, most things RU needs would be taken care of more easily if guys like those on these boards who contribute with their mouths do so instead with their pocketbooks. Unlike many of our competitors we have 10's of thousands of" fans" who give nothing or little $ towards RU 's efforts. People need to look in the mirror.

You spend your money how you like and not worry how others spend theirs. Many people I know will not donate knowing Greg's ceiling so why chase with money when the end results are not really going to be positively impacted and I'm in agreement with those persons. In addition, Rutgers does a horrendous job of creating brand familial qualities which is one of the most defining variables to people's inclination to give. Greg himself has done things to fk this up. some of you have very short memories with Greg 1.0, many people here were glad he was gone as the daily discussion was his 'ceiling'

I used to donate, donated enough to play golf with Greg and will never give another dime while he's coach. I did just give 5 figures to my grad school with a 4yr promise of same or more each year. That could have gone to NIL here but I see it as a waste with Greg. Now if my oldest son decides to go to RU then maybe I'll revisit that but, in all probability, I'll watch comfortably from the sidelines.

I want him to succeed here badly and the staff job for the MD game was outstanding but those staff performances really are few and far between for the comp he and the staff get. Perspective matters here

Not in my mind
And, now with NIL, not in reality either
Ok….when Rutgers proves it I will believe you . If we ever get a coach that becomes more successful than Schiano over a sustained 3 year run that would be something. And I don’t mean a flood taking over and having a good season with schiano’s players

Find me here then I will owe some drinks

Year started out with a lot of promise/expectations .....but then injuries and a dip in performance hit and expectations were lowered to the extent that "Fire Schiano" became a thing.......then over the past several games there is renewed hope......this roller coaster is likely why some people are expressing that they now feel good about Schiano's performance.

As far as your list....
  1. Not sure what your "Greatest School in the country" comment has to do with Football prowess. Certainly Rutgers has not proven to be historically one of the Greatest Football Schools in the country.
  2. Similar to #1 - how does the location in Piscataway/NBR NJ apply to Football Prowess? If you look at historical football program success and fan interest - there is much greater impact by being in the South or Mid-West.
  3. Media Capital yes - but this is a double edged sword. When things are going well then great. NY Media tends to be agnostic when it comes to College Football. NJ Media tends to focus on the waste factor as it applies to RU & RU Football.
  4. Incorrect - according to USA Today - Schiano is 34th in coaching salaries. https://sportsdata.usatoday.com/ncaa/salaries/football/coach
  5. Best I can tell by looking at various rankings - the OC Salary for Ciarrocca @ $1.4M is near the bottom of the Top 10. The DC Salary for Harasymiak @ $1.25M is not close to the Top 10 paid DCs which appears to be in the range of $1.8M - $2.4M. https://247sports.com/longformartic...head-of-2024-season-ranked-232264992/#2425272
  6. Development and Support Staff - I've not seen any information on this - but if you have it per your claim would be good to see
  7. and 8. are essentially the same point. I has been generally an easier schedule than in past seasons but should be noted that going by the previous BIG East schedule as a barometer is outdated given the additions. Schedule difficulty will likely sway from year to year going forward than previous.

You prove another coach wouldn't be more successful over a 3 year period.

And I don't mean a rushed OL coach turned HC or a lifelong defensive assistant who has never touched an offense.

Find me here then I will owe some drinks.

See how easy it is when you make up false arguments that can't be proved?

It can’t be proved, because it’s not true

I said not to hire flood and he was a dud. I did that on this board

I said not to hire ash and he would get us smashed . I did that on this board .

I'm not here to convince you otherwise

Truthfully, if you want to have a defeatist attitude, especially now that NIL is legal and any program that wants to compete now can (if they acquire the right resources), that's on you

I don't think small. I don't deal in fantasies. And I refuse to believe we don't have the potential to be elite

We've traditionally sucked for a variety of reasons, and thinking small with a little man's, woe is me, battered wife syndrome is part and parcel of why we've never taken that next step

That's not who I am, what I'm about, or what's in my DNA
Further, what's the point of being a fan if you're regulated to mediocre status (in reality, and in your own mind) for the duration of your past, present and most importantly, ongoing fanhood cycle?

I get it

I've scaled down my donations to football (as well as wrestling) as I don't believe Greg and Scott are the guys to get us to where we can, and should be, record wise

I've redirected that money towards bball and lax respectively, as I believe in Pike and Brian are the right guys for the job (s)

Not sure what your DNA has to do with Rutgers football
Agree fans can make a difference with donations.

But you shouldn’t be surprised by what is happening. I predicted it years ago. This is what is happening

What’s their record?
You complained about the records of the teams we played, I was just pointing out PSU have played teams with a worse record than the teams we played.

You make a stupid post and people are going to point it out.

And also, IL is ranked so we will play a ranked team.

Lulz.....yet another internet tough guy.

How exactly does your self promoted "superior" DNA make Rutgers a better football team or other people's "battered wife syndrome" make Rutgers a worse football team? Curious minds want to know.

It’s a losers mentality to think we have no chance of becoming elite, in the new world of NIL, when it’s now entirely possible, if you get the right people (or corporations) in the tri state area (the largest, most populous, and wealthiest in the entire country) to write checks in order to purchase elite players

Elite players make elite plays, play elite football, and thus, generate elite results

Which, in case you’ve been living under a rock, is now possible (and entirely legal) all thanks to NIL

Not a hard concept to grasp, regardless of one’s level of sanity

I was really hoping for 10 wins, but even I knew that for that to happen there wouldn’t be that many injuries (1 or 2) and everything would have had to go right. 8 would be amazing regardless

This didn't really address my question.

Someone on this board may have what you are defining as a "Loser Mentality" in the way they post.....and yet donate towards NIL to try and help make an impact on the team.

Conversely someone who "claims to not put up with failure" on this board and wants Schiano fired ......and yet choose to not donate anything towards NIL.

Further - why would you champion NIL as the great equalizer and talk about getting the right people to write checks when in the same thread you also talk about how you've scaled down your own donations and agree with another poster who has completely removed his? How would you expect NIL to make RU great if you yourself have admitted that's its ok to give up on these donations?

At the point that corporations got on board, which Hobbs hired a group within Rutgers to do, which remains to be seen if they will do it or not, but the possibility is there

Per my response to Plum, though JayDog may indeed have superhuman powers, the saying “it’s not in my DNA” is just that - a saying.

I champion NIL because I believe it, and conversely, donate a decent amount to it.

I haven’t given up on anything - I’ve decreased my donations to fb because I do not believe Greg is the guy to get us over the hump, and have redirected that dollar amount elsewhere (basketball and lax) and actually increased in certain instances

Again, like NIL, this is not a hard concept to grasp
