Ash to Coach tOSU Bowl Game

Again- even if he flies back and forth between Columbus and Piscataway after every bowl practice... it's not good enough.

tOUS is the competition, the enemy, the other guys now- their failure is part of our success. I expected him to eat, drink and sleep RU football.... learn everything thing he can about RU history and culture.... spend every waking moment on planning for OUR future...

Gotta agree -- if this is true, it's the kind of misstep that can come up again and again...
I agree. Ash has been waiting and planning for this moment....and he is going to divide his time over the next 3-4 weeks? There is no time to waste to assemble the very best coaching staff that is going to represent the HC. There is no time to waste to build his first recruiting class that will be with him for the next 4/5 years. OSU is the enemy now. I really hope this is reconsidered by HC Ash... Pronto!

Abro says Hobbsie might have shown his inexperience. Having DJ Durkin and Babers able to start yesterday and our guy stuck in Columbus Ohio, is kind of embarrassing. I'm sure the Ledger will have a story as soon as Manahan reads this.

Well I know pellini did it as Lsu . But that was for a national championship . Hobbs just made a questionable hire and then let this transpire . Terrible , but par for the course at ru

Honest question - where? It just seems ridiculous to me. We are a direct competitor of OSU. They are in our division.
Virginias new coach will be coaching BYU in their bowl game

If you are playing for a National Title I get it. I don't recall an assistant every staying on for a bowl game that has no effect on the National Title

one of the very first ones needs to be that the job starts immediately.

If Hobbs didn't see the significance of it previously, perhaps he may come to find out about it now and work on that "final term". It's not finalized until it is. An agreement in principle is just that--a holding pattern until the terms finalized.

RU really doesn't need to start off on a negative or at best a concerning note. This would dig him a hole that would hang around his neck for his tenure and needs to be removed.

I thought when I heard about Ash's hire that there were similarities with the GS hire (later pointed out by ledger). There are some, but only some. GS had definite and concrete plans on how to make RU what he wanted it to be. The "meeting" was genius and forever changed perception of RU fball. Those who weren't around cant imagine how laughable it would seem for an RU coach to gather the state's best to talk about RU.

I had hoped (and still do) that Ash actually has plans of a specific nature other than "coach em up and recruit well". You know, something specific to RUTGERS- this job. This waiting to come aboard full time smacks of someone who feels they got a P5 job with everything in place. The RUTGERS job is a far different beast. It needs attention NOW. What is his ideas for THIS job/

There is still time to "finalize the final details". The new coach can't start in a hole. Hobbs may need to say whatever we talked about before we have come to realize that this unique RUTGERS situation requires all hands on deck immediately--ESPECIALLY FOR AN UNKNOWN COMMODITY in NJ. Ash needs to start with a bounce and not explaining himself away as to why what he did was ok. It needs to be a non issue and he needs to get to learn the unique situation at RU so he can rugby tackle it.

Oh ok so you would be alright with it if he was the HC. SMH. Maybe just maybe Urban Meyer has rules he expects his coaches to follow?

Sorry Plum - I've read a lot of your posts and it's pretty clear you're not smarter than most people on this board. And your third person self referrals are getting very tired.

Anyway, you're making way too big of a deal of this. First, it does happen often - I'd say it's about 50/50 when a coach stays and coaches a big bowl game. I think both Narduzzi and Herman stayed last year. It's a classy move and gives RU more exposure. As long as he's working around the clock and doing what he needs to do for RU, it'll be fine. It's not like RU has a bowl game coming up so he just needs to talk to all the players and recruits. Once he starts talking to some of our recruits, you'll start seeing the tweets and it'll have a domino effect. Can we for once just support what's being done and hold off on the criticism until it's deserved.

Is that new board rule established yet? You know, that one where Plum Street can't make a different thread everyday to complain about the same thing.

You made your point everyone here knows you don't like the move. Now we don't need to hear from you.

Brian Kelly left Cinncinnati weeks before the Orange Bowl, and took many of his assistants.

Can we stop with the unknown commodity in NJ stuff? Every top coach and recruit in this state has had contact with him and knows exactly who he is.

Huh? No, I'm not ok with anyone doing it. But you said it happens all the time. Your example was an 11 year HC at another program on the other side of the country. That's not our situation. Give me the example of an assistant coach staying as on for a non-championship bowl game at a division opponent?

So it begins, "Fire Hobbs" .
Could it be Hobbs during negotiations is allowing Ash to coach the Buckeyes in their bowl game
because Urban will allow an OSU staff member Ash wants on his staff to go to RU after the bowl and Hobbs is showing his appreciation by not trying to force the issue.

Looks like the honeymoon is over for both and some want a divorce [roll]

I like that he is coaching OSU's game because he will tell their recruits to make sure to check out his team Rutgers, and come play for me. I view it as a Rutgers recruiting opportunity.

All of Ohio State already knows he is Rutgers' coach so would it hurt anyone if he wore some Rutgers gear while coaching Ohio State's defense?

So you are interviewing a candidate on December 4th for this key position - you identify someone who you feel is a very good fit - you are ready to make an offer - you ask "how soon can you start?"
They say "Well, Because of the special project I'm on (and the rules of my bonus plan) I have to stick around to help manage a part of this huge nationally televised presentation that you have heard we are doing in Arizona on January 1st .... after that I'm ready to be exclusively focused on the new job,"
they may go on to say "along the way, I should have some real quality time to get started on some of the fundamentals of this new position with your organization"

Do you stand up and say "absolutely not! if you can't quit and walk out of your position immediately, we don't want you " of course not! - would you hire somebody who would quit & depart a job with zero notice? no!

We do not know the terms that Ash discussed with Hobbs we do not know Hobbs' contractual obligations ... basically there are no details to be had - - will learn more tomorrow.
Big time coaching is not really like too many other professions.

But to use your example:
-what if we were to triple that person's salary and that person worked for a direct competitor
-and that presentation would really help the competitor while we were losing accounts because our customers don't know who is running the show over here.
-and what if we said "we'd really like you get off that private jet we are sending for you and start tomorrow"?

I just heard that Kirby Smart is going to coach Alabama. I know its the playoff but they will be in direct competition for recruits.

Charlie Strong coached Florida in the bowl after he got hired at Louisville.

Thanks. That's one. I know that Richt, Mullen, McElwain and Herman all did it but those were for national championship games

Cue the but it's a playoff nonsense as if the Fiesta bowl is some third rate bowl.

Wow is that misinformed., "every top coach and recruit" has had contact with him? Really?

They were all on campus at OSU--and were defensive players? Sure.

I get wanting to be blindly positive on the hire. I do too, but there's a giant red flag that may--or may not be something of substance. But either way what's relevant is that if the AD allows there to be a near month gap before full time at RU it will continually be brought up to question whether he wanted a head job or wanted to be at RUTGERS, and if he was ready to do more than coach me up and actually be the CEO and understand all that requires.

As with any negotiations there are always issues that come up until finalized. This is a giant one and Hobbs has some serious thinking and decision making to do in short order.

Still struggling to come up with all the examples of coaching in non-championship games? So far we have one - Charlie Strong

Love your optimistic viewpoint, but this time is critical, especially this week before the dead period. It would have been a great time to meet with the team, recruits and host the recruiting visits next weekend. Sorry, but disappointment is really the word here. Bad job by Ash.

No one knows what his schedule is going to be this week. I would be shocked if he is not here next weekend at minimum.
