Austin Williams announcenent

I don't know BUT I would think the trip abroad is irrelevant - it's only allowed once every 4 years - so it wouldn't be the same for every school.

Being officially enrolled (signed up for classes) in the school seems like the important thing - after enrolling, if you want to go somewhere else, it's a transfer

Trying to apply logic - but it's the NCAA - so who knows?
I thought Cam accepted admission to a matriculated grad program? Based on that - I’m not thinking it’s simply the registration that triggers the use of eligibility. It would be commencement of activities relating to enrollment (for instance, physical attendance at class). Since schools are allowed this trip once every 4 years, would participating in the trip (when it happens) constitute commencement of activity relating to upcoming year enrollment. That’s really the question.

I see what you're saying and that makes sense. Then wouldn't attending a practice count as well? They get 10 before the trip.
Crazy the level of uncertainty

Ha. I do still want an answer on whether the trip abroad marks an official end date to any possibility of losing any more grad transfers to the portal. Hoping someone can weigh in before that string is closed off.

Relates to Austin Williams too - if he’s coming to Rutgers, he’s going to go on that trip which means he needs to make an official announcement very soon.
unless he can sign officially, I would think he could not go.
just declaring does not make him part of the program, I would think

Good point. Hoping someone with knowledge of rules can advise so at least we would know what the target dates are going forward.

Grad transfers can enter portal whenever. There is no window. It sounds like it’s highly unlikely for any further outgoing transfers.

That’s not really true, is it? A grad student can’t play for RU in November and bounce to another team in December or January can they? There is some cut off. We just don’t know what it is.

No transfer is highly unlikely with NIL until doing so would result in a sit out requirement. There’s always a sum of money that talks and no system for monitoring tampering. Just the way it is. Every team is in the same boat - we just had more grad transfers than most this cycle.

Right from the horses mouth

NCAA graduate transfer rules

You can participate in sports as a graduate. Here are some of the requirements to do that:

  1. You must graduate from your current college/university.
  2. Have at least one year of eligibility on your five-year clock.
  3. You must be going to a graduate school that has your sport.

So once you play for a team, you could only transfer again without penalty if you graduate again and have another year of eligibility.

What consistutes “playing for a team”? That’s the million dollar question…

You use up a year of eligibility the first time you play in a game.

Way too much overthinking here.
Actually there was very little thought involved in the original question. It was - do the games abroad count as playing for Rutgers? Yes or no.

Not Austin Williams specific, but I wonder how passport issues would cause a late signee (transfer or HS recruit).

For example, supposed Williams doesn't have a passport. Or some other transfer target.
HC Pike can't really bring in a random transfer and be like "btw - we leave in a month. Do you have a passport?"
I would hope Rutgers could expedite the process.

How about the 4 games Chol played in last season?

You can get your passport in 24-48 hours, maybe quicker
It's a pain and costs more, but it can be done

Yes - so one game doesn't necessarily burn a year

I think it would though in the sense that Chol couldn’t have gone to another school last season to play that same season. Just as during Ash’ last year guys like Blackshear elected to “take their redshirt” after playing in 4 games. I don’t think they could’ve joined another school and played for them immediately.

This topic is very real to think about in today’s environment by the way where money can be thrown around like candy.
