Ben Howland

Ben Howland? are we talking about the same ben howland who went to the final four 3 times and recruited multiple NBA players? That Ben Howland?

Danny Hurley and Mike Lonegran wouldnt take the Rutgers job. What makes you think Ben Howland would take it? If we are asking for Howland we might as well be asking for John Beilein or Mark Few too.

Yes that’s the guy. I thought there was a rumor he was interested when Jordan was hired . Howland was out at UCLA at the time.
Anyway, starting this thread was a mistake on my part. I just saw him on tv over the weekend and figure to ask here. We obviously missed the boat with Howland, like many times in rutgers history. We got pike now and let’s hope he gets it done .

Watching his miss state team against Kentucky. He is going to be in the tourney again. Wasn’t he a candidate for our job when Jordan was hired? Please tell me that’s not true and Rutgers wasn’t that dumb. This guy is a heck of a coach.
That dumb? On paper Jordan looked like a great hire. We get it..your hindsight is perfect.

On paper Jordan looked like a great hire? Was it his extensive collegiate coaching and recruiting experience or his winning NBA record across three teams?
Well most of us were excited..it was an nba coach who had limited success coming back and most of us were jumping for joy. Was an NBA coach with a winning record gonna sniff ru? No? Ok then. If you want to pretend like the board knew what was coming or how amazingly lazy he was, fine. Your hindsight is, again, immaculate.

I wasn't super excited at the time - especially after he assembled his staff. I remember there being a fair amount of mixed feelings on the board - again, especially around who he was surrounding himself with.

To be fair, I also wasn't super impressed by the McNulty hire in football, though some were jumping for joy. Experience (especially recent experience) successfully doing the job you're hired for goes a long way.

I thought Jordan was just going to be a 1-2 year bandaid.. doing us a favor at a time when it might have been real hard to hire a coach with the mess going on. But man, he was awful and nothing in his resume showed he could build a college team. Hell.. we woulda been better off going to ANYONE else. How sad is that? We should have stuck with Rice and blamed it on having already punished him with the suspension and mandated counselling. Then let him have open practices that anyone could watch. Rice was a good coach with some old bobby knight/boot-camp mentality that had to be corrected. We teach PR here somewhere, but somehow never attempted to turn vice into virtue on that one.

then why would you have fired Rice
I am not sure I understand your question. Are you asking if I would have fired Rice? Rice wasn't getting it done on the court and then had a scandle so firing him became necessary or maybe more appropriately justified.
