Having the MD band there was great. They did a very nice show. I thought..oh boy, we're gonna be embarrassed. NOT!

That was a great great creative show..good music, great thing with the 4 piece group in the stands, and the new enthusiasm is apparent.

great job Mr. New Director and Band !

Loved the show!

Unfortunately the band has gotten noticeably smaller as the season has moved along. Gotta wonder if This is just due to the transition. From Smith to the new director. I’ve been hearing from a couple people that the current directors much more demanding and that would make me think that the kids in the upper classes are walking away. Anyone with better connections have a response?

Unfortunately can't really hear them, but the back of the uniforms look nice every game...

The fans on the visitors sideline seem to like the band.

Hopefully it will be posted on YouTube as I’ll have to check it out. Glad to hear the new director is more demanding.....when the kids realize their potential they will stay and the band will grow. He may also be able to entice music majors to come back to the band as well.

Went to a BU Hockey game, recently. Full Band in the student section of the ice arena, along with a smaller, multi-piece band up above them -- very cool collaboration and playing off of one another. Definitely a fun atmosphere. Hope they continue that @ RU games. Would be fun @ Basketball, too.

it was a lot of fun. hopefully we can get up to the size of maryland's band in the near future and ditch the microphones in the student section.

Word in the band is the new band guy runs the band like a high school band. He and his boss in Mason Gross have zero college band experience, and the kids in the band are not happy being treated like high school kids.

The RU band is about the size of a high school band now and their shows are just what you can see at my daughters high school shows. It will be interesting to see what happens with the band, but Hobbs and Ash can't be happy with their new high school band.

The band has been performing in the field after the games. Yesterday they did a drumline contest vs the Maryland drumline. I didn't see it live but I did watch is on the Rutgers University Marching Band Facebook page. it was pretty awesome

They have been doing that for years any time a visiting band comes in.

The band sounded great in the stands. I love the new custom of playing the verse of The Bells Must Ring after TDs and the chorus after the xp.

Our band faces the camera at halftime. Remember Schiano switched the home side to the east stands when he realized the visitors and visiting coach had been getting all of the facetime on TV broadcasts.

By the way, it seemed to us in section 220 that the Maryland band was some how miked up while they sat in the upper deck on the other side of the stadium. Louder than our band and somewhat annoying when our offense was on the field. Thankfully the visiting band was not at the wrestling match.

I guess Tim Smith has enough time in his retirement to be able to sign up for a Rivals account.

The rookie has made his mark in a short amount of time. If he is more demanding, good for him. If there are defections due to a demanding director, may they enjoy an easier life with less discipline, which most likely won't work out better for them in the long run.

More people are watching and enjoying the band, and you come up with that??

Halftime show was Great!!! I'd advise people to come into the stadium 20 minutes early for the alma mater as well.

I can confirm on the high school thing... have heard from multiple people that he started out referring to members as "kids" which didn't go over well, among other things. (And he has since stopped).

Have also heard that he's changing up the pepband makeup to try to maintain consistency in size.

just the creativity alone means he is an upgrade, but yeah TURN AROUND AND PLAY TO THE OTHER SIDE JUST ONCE...ONCE

bac,

I have had the same complaint at the bb games for the dance and cheerleader teams.... it is like the
other side does not exist.

I sit in 121 and was directly across from them as well. Here are my thoughts:

- they were not "miked" up

- they simply were in the upper tier, playing down, with a lot of brass in the upper half of their seating, and played loud, and often which directly across as such is going to sound even louder. They also had about 30 or so musicians out there more than we did last night.

Was just able to freeze a full screen shot of the Block R in pre-game and I came up with about 160 on the field including 6 flags and a couple of twirlers. That would mean approximately 60 kids have quite since camp begun as we were around 190 on the field, Game 1, and 225 was reported during August.

That's a lot of kids quitting and, hopefully not a sign of the "future" but more one of them being used to the coddling they received under Smith and these kids simply not liking the "new style" very much.

How can that be if there have been no basketball games? Unless bb = baseball.
---
I am talking about over the past 30 something years in basketball...... the dance and cheerleader teams always
face the one way during their routines....they perform to the cushy seated side.

So some think it was a great show, while others think we are on par with an average HS band?

Incredible how people can look at the same thing and come away with such divergent opinions.

On the field of play? Was not aware. Some people poo poo it, but I love the band aspect of college football, and that includes the opposing teams.

The Rutgers Band has been performing at local high school competitions when the team is away. They put on a really fun show and at end announce that any kid who hopes to be part of the Rutgers band can contact their website. There is already a shift where kids who looked down in the Rutgers band in past years are now seriously considering as an option.

THANK YOU for posting this. Fantastic stuff and the best of college athletics. Great sportsmanship and young people having lots of fun.

I wish they had made more PR about this post game event. Would have stayed for it.
Would love more of the visiting bands playing here too. Guess this was a bi-product of the move from the Bronx as well.
Need to have the cheerleaders involved like MD band did.
Band singing the Alma Mater was super.
Looks like we have a winner leading things here too. [thumb2][thumb2] 2 thumbs up!

Great post!! Hi Tim!!!

Sorry. I'm not. What I am is the frustrated father of a high school band senior who I really wish would attend Rutgers. She wants a school with a big time band and she, and many of her friends don't see Rutgers as an option.

Her top 5 are Michigan, Maryland, Pitt, James Madison, and UMass.

So JMU and UMass have big time bands?

This new guy seems to be turning things around and creating excitement. Whatever goes on behind the scenes, I don't know about, so my ears are open. So far the band has some of my attention when it never has in the past.

on the bright side of the issue, I am a good student of their rear ends by now

The dance team is back with a VENGEANCE this year! Wow! I'm just a little pissed off because - and I could be wrong BUT I wasn't drunk yesterday - I'm pretty sure they didn't "play" to the north end of the stadium at all yesterday.

yeah, they look hot and nasty..... I will get a much better look-see at the bb games.

Yes, JMU and UMASS have excellent band programs.

But while some kids may be upset about it, the band culture at RU clearly needed to change.

This year’s band is a big step forward. And yesterday’s show was a major major improvement. Fun!

But it will take time, and lots of recruiting.
