Bloody, but unbowed

To borrow a line from Henley (William, not Don) in his poem Invictus, as a fan of this team, “my head is bloody, but unbowed.”

Deflated is not strong enough a word for how I felt watching our guys play last night. The thing I kept saying to myself during the game was, “we’re better than this.”

Our observations include:

We got out-coached
We run no half-court offense
We’re too soft
We can’t make open looks
We suck at foul shooting
We don’t take care of the ball
We play too many cupcakes to start the year

All of this is true. And most of it is correctable.

The talent is there, but one thing this team needs, to a man, is to look inside themselves, muster their strength and confidence, attack the game and will themselves to win.

They need to adopt the attitude expressed in the last lines of Invictus: “I am the master of my fate, I am the captain of my soul.”

So on we go.

The issue is the team lacks a scorer. A go to guy that can light it up. Great, solid role players for the most part these guys are better than the cupcakes.
When it's to 100 there is no go to guy. We will win some but we will lose more.

Last thing I remember, I was
Running for the door
I had to find the passage back to the place I was before (in f'n 1991)
'Relax' said the night man,
'We are programmed to receive.
You can check out any time you like,
But you can never leave!'

Wrong Henley, but some of these lyrics do apply.

Most successful teams have multiple go to scorers while Rutgers has none. Its also rather embarrassing watching other low level teams run a better half court offense

All good points. I’m just trying get into the psyche of our talented players, wondering why other teams seem to attack and generally play more aggressive. The phrase, “we’re too soft” is one way to say it, but it seems more like a confidence thing to me.
