brandon paetzell Leaving Rutgers

Everybody here loves AP. Nobody is denying what AP had to say, and nobody here cared for Paetzell's message for the press. People here will be thrilled if we can get better at a weak spot like 125.

The only question is whether AP was smart in being so open and harsh in a public forum like Twitter and other recent tweets. Official coach or not, the kid is a visible rep of our program, as a recent AA and more recent trainer at SKWC. I'm just not a fan of people like that being so openly hostile like that. Save it for the coach's room or drinks at the bar.

And get over the tough guy internet stuff.

The point is BP is a great kid. His father called the coaches out and they put him in is place. This sport at the college level is about the wrestler and the coaches. BPs father let his ego get in the way of BP future at RU. So be it. What AP was react to the statement which was an excuse that Lehigh was a better program then RU. AP gave his heart and soul to RU and called the kid out for a wrong statement. Dippery left and never bad mouthed the program. You all should hope ever kid that comes to RU has the passion AP had and has about being an RU wrestler. Abro I have a tweet saved where prior to AP AAing you bad mouthed the program and in response you were called out by BA and JP. Then your tweet was deleted and you started being a fan. I call it like it is.

I am no tough guy. By now you should know who I am!!!

As for Paetzell's dad, again I have no idea what you are talking about. You might be right , but I must admit I have never seen anything or heard anything he said or did . I did hear Paetzell went to our RU Wrestling dinner with his mom (did not hear if his Dad went).
I'm a supporter of the RU program, have been going to matches for DECADES, am friends with some on the SKWC, and plan on going to all matches this year.

PS= who is BA or JP that you are talking about above ?

I think this thread needs to take a breather and fast. Let it go @Abro1975. You've said your piece. Time for all to move on.

@rugrapfan1. I wish we had 5 more kids like your boy in our lineup each year. Guys like him define what it is to be a Jersey wrestler. But he is a grown man now and will need to stand by his words. When you are outspoken be prepared for the blowback. With that said I hope he continues to train with the team for years to come.

ABRO I am Mr. Perrotti. I have read every tweet socially and comment on this forum for years. If you want to deny your tweet so be it. I am applaud you have the nerve to talk about my sons tweets. You don't even know the facts. To tell the coaches to tell my son to STFU well I take that personally considering this program would have not even gotten where it was if my son did not AA when he did. Yea AA would of done what he done. But the pressure to be the first was impacted by my son. I don't like you. In fact some of your post about wrestlers on this team have been pretty bad at times. You the one who needs to keep in check what you post.

BTW don't tell anyone to go F yourself dude.

I feel everything I posted has been more than Fair.
I was elated to watch your son become an AA at MSG and love his passion. Richie Lewis reminds me of your son a lot. BUT his tweets DO NOT HELP the Program ! His coaching with the SKWC does I'm sure. But sometimes the TWEETS go too far. Just look at our President and how his tweets are affecting him.
Brandon Paetzell is a good kid. Maybe doesnt' fit in with the 'culture' of the RU practice room, but is a talented kid, who should have been red shirtted last year but gave it his all when McCabe couldn't.
I'll still be at the RU matches this year, as well as the football games, just like I have been for the last 45 years. I've met Nick Gravina's Dad at tailgates, Richie Lewis and his Dad at RU baseball games, and others.
I 've regretted Nothing i've said or done in regards to Rutgers.

@Jersey Boys point well taken. I will say AP passion for RU far exceeds past RU wrestlers. I talk to him all the time and he believes the future for RU is going to get better. So he says words. Maybe it's the truth. Is every kid going go to a college to start. RU has a great education what we need to compete is depth. When kids leave because they won't start that kid is sending a message. We want to be like Penn State. Where backups are studs. It is has to be an honor and earned to be a stater. That is out key getting to the next level. Competition in the room.

Think I speak for every Rutgers fan when I say we are all proud of what AP did while he was competing for the Scarlet Knights. He had one heck of a career. Mr. Perottii should be proud of his son and has every right to defend him.

Now that he is a coach and no longer a wrestler, his thoughts and words will be held to a higher standard than they were previously. Something for him to keep in mind going forward.

ABRO about the red shirting. College wrestling is brutal. Anthony's fs year he did not rs. Started 141 backing up Billy A. Then Mario had problems he went 149. Then they were getting nothing out of 157 and he wrested 157. Did I complain no. Did I think it was somewhat a wasted year yes. He tried to qualify at 157 and it did not work out for him. But I realized what he learned that year would benefit him. As a dad I had to put my ego aside and left it up to the coaches. I think my sons comments are from the heart. We could of said wtf let's find a better school to fit us. We stuck with Goody and look where it got us. Don't confuse my sons comments as being negative. Look at it as sending a message. RU wants team players.

Peace!!!

I'm sorry . I wish I was a bit more 'calm ' when I posted my 'stfu' comment. It was only meant as 'be more coach like'. I live in Cedar Grove, probably saw all of AP's districts at West Essex HS. Mike Risimini, a Region champ here in CG lives 3 doors away and is a friend of mine. I did all my football l officiating training at West Essex HS under Frank Valenzano. Officiated many West Essex games. Been to Lombardis's in CG and Fairfeld a million times. But I've known Paetzell since he was a freshman at Pburg, been to almost every Pburg District from 1968 to 1998 when I moved to CG since I have so many wrestling friends from Pburg and my sister married a guy from Pburg. If Paetzell had your son's passion and strength , well , maybe he would still be here. But every kid is different. I honestly thought Paetzell was an undersized 125 who just got grinded down by the last few weeks. As an RU wrestler AP had every right to say what he did. As a coach, not so sure. But i'm just an old fan who gets riled up from time to time.
PS- I said it earlier, nobody had the passion that your son had. I see so much of him in Richie Lewis.

Belushijo AP is not a RU coach or club coach at this time. For all let's be clear on that. He does not officially represent RU other then on his own volunteering going to help the team. He speaks with passion about a program that made him who is and help move RU forward.

Don't want to be converying something that isn' true by calling him a coach, so maybe mentor is a better word to use. Regardless, I know Anthony has the best interests of the program in his heart and was 100% genuine in his feelings.

If he ever wants to be a coach he probably should step away from twitter. Many administrators would think twice about hiring him if they looked at his Twitter which most do now. There is no denying his passion but his rants come off as immature and not as an adult who you want coaching young men.

Abro I have always considered you a fair weather fan. So basically you need to STFU. Don't test me.
Abro is 100% correct here. The kid IS a friggin' boy scout and I'm sure he feels more comfortable close to home. This move is not surprising at all to me. As with every decision like this, I'm sure there are multiple factors considered, I'm sure this played a big part in this decision. I'm 100% sure of this. Well, 99%...

And, yes, there have been some tweets out there by people associated or not associated with RU wrestling in regards to this and other things that are not a good look for RU wrestling. But from my limited experience with RU wrestling, I can't say I'm shocked. It's what happens - almost everywhere.

But on the whole it's not really a big deal because Goodale and staff have done such a great job getting the program to this point. You are dealing with college age kids so there's always going to be a few bumps in the road.

Before someone misconstrues the above post, after thinking about it, I would state that I'm not sure there are many programs where I could see BP being super comfortable with culturally wise while being away from home in a different environment. Abro is/was correct in his statement, the kid is truly a boy scout. Really good kid, as are most all college kids, but that doesn't mean they all fit in well together.

Everything about this move makes perfect sense to me including all the reactions on both sides. I agree with Abro that people should not be throwing this really good kid from a good family under the bus AT ALL. This move should end up being great for all involved. Nobody at fault, this is just the way things go.

It's the off season , and I'm amazed at the passion for this program by all posters. It bodes well for the future. However, I am a bit uncomfortable with the personal nature of discussion immediately above.. It's been said and read, so I would like to see it deleted. Just my personal take. Thanks for listening. $$$$

Why? I don't think anyone should have a problem with anything posted directly above. It's not too personal and, again, there is really nobody at fault here. Nobody looks like a bad guy and it's not like RU is running a program with a bunch of Downey's or even one.

RU has a great wrestling program filled with great wrestlers, coaches and aides. All kinds of kids and very good kids. A program under Goodale that is on it's way up.

Brandon Paetzel and his family are very good people. Anyone who has ever met Brandon would agree that he is a great kid and is very close with his family, and Lehigh being 15 minutes away as a smaller, really nice school with a great wrestling program and good partners is a great fit for him.

That's how I would read the above posts and it's certainly better for the thread than some of the posts and tweets that were out there before.

I think that is exactly what Abro was getting at and his posts were misconstrued - and probably mine too - and he got hammered for it.

People are protective of their kids whether it's Brandon Paetzel or Perrotti or Gavin Hoffman's dad (if you saw that situation recently) or even Pat Downey and they SHOULD be. It can lead to polarizing situations, even in situations when nobody is really at fault and everybody should just cool down.

I have no doubt that BP is a good kid. I never met him and I wish him well.

If you follow twitter and see the responses and retweets from current members of the wrestling team, not just AP, it seems that there were some feelings expressed from members of the team that were in line with AP. I am not going to post them here.

That is too be expected and as I posted before I doubt it would be much different anywhere else. That said, I think Paetzel's own tweet - one that referenced coming home - is probably the best thing that has been posted and I seriously doubt that Goodale and staff would be throwing the kid under the bus. Probably the best examples to follow here.

Also, I would add that none of my own kid's certainly are angels or even boy scouts and although I can objectively express a dispassionate opinion on this transfer, as a parent I could see myself being brought into a poor situation if my own kid was the subject of people's opinions. Would hope that I wouldn't, but you never know.

BA referenced above is Billy Ashnault and JP is Joe Pollard. I hope that BP enjoys Lehigh and that our new 125 pounder the next 3 or 4 years exceeds what BP would have given RU. If Brandon is happy I am happy for him. Mr Perrotti bleeds scarlet and is a terrific human being. I have told he and his wife that if they ever want to get rid of AP I would gladly adopt him. Told that to AP years ago also.

It sure seems like a lot of emphasis is being put on him returning home, as if he was hundreds or thousands of miles away. He's 50 minutes from home now & will be 25 minutes at Lehigh.

You're obviously not from the valley.

He doesnt need to be from the valley. The closer to home stuff is bs. Sounds like the father got involved and didnt like the response he got so he took his ball and went home.
Real problem is BP didnt take it to the mat. If he had new competition with Firestone or someone else coming in - wrestle for your spot! dont run off and transfer for "better competition/partners at Lehigh" when you couldnt handle the comp here.Is Lehi gh going to stop recruiting his weight the next 3 years, what happens when he cant beat Farro? Next stop- Rider
BTW.. Love AP

If BP really transferred cuz of Firestone, whom was struggling in d1, then dang it's hard to imagine him having much production at Lehigh.

Maybe its more about Mackall?

Which is funny because there was a time when I feared he may wind up never contributing.

Pardon me if I am wrong.. but didn't he not wrestle at Bucknell? Or were you referring to struggling wrestling unattached. I couldn't seem to find any unattached records. I am happy to have Firestone and think he will be a great fit.

4-6 last year during 1st semester. Competed at Navy Classic, Cleveland State Open and Las Vegas. TBF, all his matches were at 133 which may have been a challenge as a trFR. There were some rumors that he was struggling to make 125. He was also neck and neck with Gould (I believe he won 1 wrestle off, but may have lost another) who had a decent season for a trFR.

It's the same kid who switched weights to avoid Suriano in states, so it's not surprising.
Kids do that all the time in high school and college. If you had a kid who goal was to win a state title would you say stay at the weight with the 3 time champion or move a weight?

OR David Taylor. He always seeked better competition in hs and would even bump up weights sometimes to face better guys

You don't have to look far; our AA did the same. I believe he would go after wrestlers he got beaten by previously to exact revenge. You got to embrace competition and not run away from it - in wrestling, and in life.

Who competes with Mackall at 125 this year ?
