Calling our fans out - some of you are terrible

If this game was played next year, after the improvement in the program this season, we get 2-3K more fans in the building.

I'd rather have 2-3K more in the RAC seeing an exciting atmosphere and craving to come back for the next game. This was the perfect game to start getting fannies back in their seats at the RAC. Thus why I'm so disappointed it was moved to MSG. Not many went, nor were many expected to. So to me this was a wasted opportunity to re-energize the loyal downtrodden fan base. Which seems to have been ignored in this instance for our penance to the all mighty B1G.

many of our fans are so provincial--we are not a Middlesex county school--we are supposed to be a national school--those complaining about travelling to nyc or missing a tailgate make us seem so small and weak

Yes, we know how you feel. You've stated it over...and over...and over...and over...lol. We also could have lost by 30 at home today. What would THAT have done? Just sayin'.

I'll stop but I'm just prepping you for the Maryland game week. :)

How can you blame fans for missed free throws and turnovers?? And according to your logic Wisconsin would have missed all of their 3 pointers because of the fans and not the defense. RU has no shooters to keep d honest in the closing minutes to also help open up middle. Don't blame the fans. Give them something to cheer for and they will show up.

In 1976, Rutgers sold out the garden for a Thursday night game against West Va and it was 95% Rutgers fans. Today's game - I had to catch it on BTN, but it looked like we had a pretty good crowd (and loud on tv), as decent a crowd as one could expect given our recent past futility. We played terrific except for free throws down the stretch and Number 15 Wisconsin was very lucky to win. We are getting better and better and are close to getting over the hump. If we can get hot down the stretch, watch out because the defense is already excellent. Maybe we will peak in DC at the tournament.

1. Game at MSG. Game is closer for some than a game at the RAC and an easy ride to the city. Game is also on a Saturday.
2.4-42. The narrative has been overwhelmingly positive this year and we know it's moving in the right direction. What are we competing with? Monster truck st prudential center?
No excuse Wisconsin fans should have greatly outnumbered ours-and make more noise to boot. I'm embarrassed, to be honest.

Sorry but 1-7 does not move the needle for casual fans who see this involving first place and last place. Hobbs already knew it was a tough sell because he didnt make it part of the season ticket package....I think you overestimate greatly the interest in RU hoops...we probably have 1800 season tickets sold and have only had over 6k at the RAC twice this year...I just do not think its a good idea to play there the program is substantially better...attendence wasnt great for Fordham either

If we weren't the B1G's bitch. Getting peanuts for 7 years and playing home games away from campus.

Something most people said we should never never do.

That would help fan moral. But no we have to continue the misery because we are soooooooooo lucky to be in this league. That we get scraps and are supposed to love it.
I agree, like you long for the AAC (not ACC) days RU left and being the big program in that conference.
Of course we can remember the good old BE days that had RU FB the Providence gangs Bitch and the RU MBB moving from a middle of pack program to a bottom feeder
then back to the middle/ then bottom feeder again more times than I care to remember .
That was a bitch.[winking]

Yes being a B1G team sucks since RU isn't earning top dollar in that conference yet, but what it earns is based on what it made in the BE/AAC, so that tells you how poorly RU was paid when in the AAC/BE.
In a few more years Rutgers will be getting the big B1G bucks and being a bitch now might prove worth it, since RU MBB wasn't setting the world on fire since before RU even joined the BE Conference

I hate to imagine Home Court edge, or at least a better fan presence is worth one point in regulation. But the bigger point is that are fanbase is very mediocre. Nothing wrong with calling them out.

There were plenty of Rutgers fans there and the place was rocking just fine when we went on the runs in the first half and late 2nd half. This was a destination vacation for Wisconsin fans coming in from all over the place. Behind me were an older couple who travelled down from Boston to see this game. Its all about selling the B1G to the east coast market, with the B1G tournament being in DC this year. Same for the football game in Yankee Stadium. I'm glad I went. Wisconsin, save for Happ, couldn't hit the ocean from the beach, any more than Sa could hit a free throw. Their percentages were far worse than ours until the last 2 minutes of the game. They felt lucky to win. And were. We were up by 9 anfter going about 10 minutes of playing time without a basket. Its the same problems...good hard work but little outside shooting and horrific FT shooting.

A10, Big East, AAC & now the Big 10. The little red schoolhouse will continue the tradition of losing. Like death and taxes. .one thing you can count on!

Then please discontinue your membership here, don't watch or go to any games. Root for Kansas or Kentucky or North Carolina or some such program which wins 2 games pretty much every year. Loser mentality is not welcome.

No it was about forcing Rutgers to play a home big 10 home game in MSG.A game that would have been won at the RAC.The BIG 10 gives a tiny fraction of funds to Rutgers and expects them to lose the home court. Those at Rutgers athletic leadership do not know how to stand up for Rutgers.

good to see the trolls getting worried, before they could knock RU and RU MBB fans felt hopeless because they didn't have confidence in RU MBB improving the way the team played and and/or turmoil surrounding the program.

Now the little trolls still try to get their digs in, but RU MBB fans don't feel bothered by those digs anymore, this RU HC knows what he's doing, has a great staff and the way the team is playing competitively RU MBB fans see the light at the end of tunnel.
That light is not the usual train coming to run over the hopes and dreams of a tourney bid, but the light that guides college basketball programs on the way to the Big Dance.
That mifght be a few years away, but the light is shining brighter than before and that means Rutgers is starting to get closer.

You won't live to see it. 7 years to get equal pay and who knows how many more to maybe get competitive.

But hey it's a great league, if you're one of the old money teams.

I was at the game and was very proud of our team. Yes we lost and we missed a few foul shots at the end of regulation but the game was a great atmosphere in a great arena. There is no way that 90% of those at the game were Wisconsin fans. Our RU fans were loud and I think we were close to 40%. Many RU fans have been crying since this game was scheduled. Many more of our fans should have been at the game. I have had season tickets for many many years and I go to every home game plus as many away games as I can get to. I am 72 years old and fighting cancer and I still go to support the team. I think too many just don't really want to support the team. They are so much better this year than last but too many expect miracles immediately. MSG is so easy to get to by train. I just don't understand why many would not attend. This was a huge event that the BIG is sponsoring every year. This year was our turn. We probably won't have this happen again for several years but if I am healthy I will hope to be there this next time as well.

Would have loved to have gone today my daughter had 2 hoops games today. Her Rec game and then travel game. Sandwiched in between RU game. Had to miss 3 minutes of OT to go to travel game

A 50/50 fan split wouldn't have kept Happ from scoring 32 points on 67% shooting. The problem isn't the fans. It's the lack of talent on the court. All the attendance and cheering in the world isn't going to turn a bunch of guards who can't shoot into Steph Curry, or a bunch of overmatched frontcourt players into Kevin Durant. Some of these "terrible" fans have watched almost 30 years of mediocre to awful basketball. Dial it down a notch.

While Wisconsin fans were making tons of noise???? That can rattle the best free throw shooters. If you were there you'd understand.

So right. Opposing fans NEVER try and do that. And we always hit our free throws when that's not happening.

You can talk all you want about how hard THIS team plays and what a good job the coach is obviously doing. But the casual fans has seen years and years of putrid to mediocre basketball and a team that clearly seems over its head in its new conference. Will this change? I think so, but we've heard that before. I don't blame anyone for not going out of his or her way to spend money on the product Rutgers has put on the court.

If I lived nearby would I be there? Sure, hell I had season tickets during the Shea/Schiano transition era and missed TWO home games during Craig Littlepage's tenure. But I never blame anyone for having something better to do than go to a sporting event. In any sport. In any town.

As far as the game goes, ranked opponent blah blah blah, played tough blah blah. Up nine late. Lost. One more free throw would have won it, but they -- again -- sucked from the line. You HAVE to win this game. Not based on the opponent, not based on what you thought before it started, but based on what actually happened. Win the damn game.

And until your mindset changes to that of folks in State College, Columbus, etc we will always be behind the eight ball. That's fine...but don't complain about that team losing. I will go to my grave saying that the major reason we lost yesterday was the appalling lack of RU fans showing up Tina game that was readily accessible. What, do all fans live in a five yard radius of PiscAtaway?
An RU fans sitting on their tushes so much is also a problem, as Scarletwoman has rightly pointed out.

don't know you personally but you're a great fan and a fantastic contributor to this site. Wishing you all the best with your health 1212. Beat it!

I'm proud of our boys. They played their tails off. If we have an outside shooter and make a couple of free throws we win. That has nothing to do with the fans. I watched on TV. Can't wait for the next game.

We can barely fill our own gym and you thought we were going to fill the garden?

My family have been season ticket holders almost 30 years now. I'm the most optimistic fan and a huge Rutgers homer but I knew wed be outnumbered by wisky fans the day the game was announced. They're a perennial contender with a huge tri-state alumni base.

We were highly competitive and gave an effort to be proud of. We lost the game for two simple reasons...missed free throws and not fouling happ on the final play. Simple as that.

Disappointed to see all the negativity. I couldn't go and I'm at just about every game but I watched on tv. We were 16 point underdogs and had the game won. Yes, we blew it and that's what happens when you're not used to winning and can't hit free throws.

But if you think we shouldn't happen with the progression of this team, I have no words for you. I don't mind playing at msg either. That's not why we lost the game. We should be fine playing anywhere, anytime and we will win plenty of these games in the future.
