Cam Spencer and Marcus Hammond visiting next week

For anyone who still hasn't seen Marcus Hammond play, here are a few short single game highlight videos that give an idea of his play against some decent teams this year. He wears #10 for Niagara.

vs Iona
39 min, 26pts, 10-16 FG, 2-6 3PT, 4-4FT, 4RB, 6 AST, 2TO

vs Xavier
35 min, 25pts, 9-17FG, 4-10 3PT, 3-3FT, 6RB, 1 AST 8TO

vs Ohio State (somewhat longer video of entire game highlights of both teams)
38 min, 22pts, 7-14FG, 4-9 3PT, 4-7FT, 6RB, 3 AST, 3TO
8 turnovers against Xavier 😬

Yeah, that was in their first game of the season. Hammond also had 5 turnovers vs Canisius and St. Peters mid season.

Although he committed 4 or more turnovers in six of his first 17 games this season, he improved and only committed a total of 18 turnovers in his last 12 games. (and 2 or less turnovers in 11 of his last 12 games, with a single 3 turnover game vs Manhattan).

Not sure if this will be any better, but the competition definitely involves more elite players. Loyola vs North Carolina, 18 minute highlights video, early in the 21-22 season.
Loyola Maryland vs North Carolina
Some really positive things in this game against elite competition. Spencer really is a crafty finisher off the dribble. He won't blow by you with speed, but if you close too fast he can pump fake and hit a pull up. He works well off ball screens. One of his best moves seems to be a hesitation dribble in the lane and using his body to shield to get shots off.

Also showed nice anticipation to jump passing lane for a steal.

Seems to protect the ball and be a good passer

Times back door cuts nicely. He definitely uses change of pace very well which is crucial for people who lack pure quickness and explosion

I saw that he had a stretch on the first 4 games where he couldn’t buy a 3. Went like 2-19 including the UNC game. His 35% shooting from 3 would otherwise be close to 39% for the year if not for that one bad stretch. Seems like he’s a really good shooter.

Not gonna hold a one-off performance like that against him. Star players in those low major - high major games have to shoulder a massive load and really need to do it all in order for their team to compete. Obviously would prefer low TOs in a game like that, but unless there’s a real pattern of erratic play I’d expect TOs to be held in check in a more complimentary role

Slater hinting that Rutgers is getting a commit and thus will not take Hammond. Presumably this is Spencer. I still think we could use two guards (maybe Dawes now?) or a wing (Horton?)

Dang, wanted both but Spencer is a good get. Would want another guard as well

We have 4 open scholarships, but we aren't acting like it. Pike really must be holding out hope for Caleb

Hammond over spencer is surprising especially since Spencer basically came out of nowhere
If we wouldn't take Spencer if we got Hammond AND we're worried about Notre Dame jumping in for Hammond then it makes sense to take Spencer now. Personally I'd still take both and the staff may feel that way too but senses they don't sit as well for Hammond as they wanted (either ND involvement or the Georgetown visit wowed him).

Yea I would definitely take both. Really don’t see the downside to that at all. We have plenty of minutes to give out even if Caleb does come back.

Yeah, it’s probably a case where Hammond wanted to at least take a visit to Notre Dame and staff would rather lock in Spencer before Alabama or TCU swoops in.

Wonder what Pike's plan is for what to target with the open spots. 4 open but Pike has said he likes to leave one open spot. If so, that's 3 open. Spencer takes one and there are 2 spots left.

If he doesn't want another guard, he must want a bigger wing and a backup big man?

Or Slater is just assuming we are only looking for one guard, not realizing how many open spots we have so he thinks Spencer is taking it

And for anyone who still needs a look at Cam Spencer, here's Loyola's full game vs Boston University this season in the Patriot League tournament in March. Spencer is #12.

vs Boston University
38minutes, 28pts, 11-20FG, 2-6 3PT, 4-4 FT, 2REB, 1AST, 2 STL
who else is pursuing him?

really surprised we would take him over hammond

Alabama and TCU.
Everything i read on TCU is they are returning all 5 starters including Miles who decided not to pro a week ago and are targeting the LSU kid. Dont think they were realistic for spencer.

Admittedly dont know about Bamas situation but it would surprise me. Anyone following Bama bball?

That doesn't mean they weren't recruiting him. Not all 1400 kids in the portal will start

He shot 44% and 47% his first 2 years from 3
That's obviously impressive, but we also should remember that his 47% 2020-2021 season was based on only 5 games in which he shot a combined 7-15 from 3, including a 3-4 game against Army. He missed the rest of the 2020-2021 season due to hip surgery.

Awkward for Hammond. He is on campus for a visit and Spencer commits and takes his spot. That sucks
I don't recall there only being one guard spot available with 4 scholarships open. I'm not counting on RHJ, Caleb or JJ being back so there is room if he's interested after his other visits.

Strange that we haven’t been linked to any true wings so far. Guess you could count Wright but he falls somewhere in between the wing/guard mold. Understand why not many big man targets have emerged since we won’t be targeting top-tier guys, but overall intriguing to watch the transfer strategy unfold

As an edit: suppose the wing could be McConnell — grows more likely by the day that he returns if more wing targets don’t emerge. That said, would still be a little surprised if he came back

If only 1 guard spot, I seriously doubt you get both on campus at the same time. They are two totally different type of players, PG and Shooter. IMO, I think they were selling both to come in.

Sounds like Hammond is not ready until he takes all his visits.

This is how the game is played. Players pit schools against each other, schools pit players against each other. We didn't do that with Ethan Wright and we see how that went. He might've picked Colorado anyway but I like this strategy better.

“Alabama landed arguably the top point guard available from the Transfer Portal last week in Ohio product Mark Sears. The Muscle Shoals, Ala. made it official with the Crimson Tide on Tuesday, signing his name on the dotted line.”

Don’t think either place was a likely landing spot given the news out of Bama and TCU a week ago.

Anyone other reports leading up this commitment regarding other landing spots?

He visited Loyola Chicago last weekend.

He must know there’s at least a possibility Caleb is coming back and wants to wait because he’ll likely focus on different types of additions depending on what happens. For example, if Caleb doesn’t return, he’ll probably go after at least one kid who won’t have the offensive stats folks on here like but who is a proven defender.

Maybe he’s just being patient. I doubt Caleb will wait until exactly June 1st. Figure in the next 4 weeks or so we’ll have an answer. I can’t imagine not using the open schollies though. We’ll make at least 1 more offer. Maybe 2?

I don’t care who else wanted him - he’s a perfect fit for what RU needs. A pure SG. That happens to be the position of greatest supply at all levels. We just happen to need a shooter making RU the perfect landing spot. Hopefully his defense is servicable but the fact that he has 2 years and not just 1 makes him a very good get IMO.

Spencer did not come out of nowhere. Pikiell has been in contact with him as soon he hit the portal. Been talking to him building a relationship. Any narrative that Pikiell only targets 1 guy at a time is nonsense.

It was the culmination of a recruitment that started when Rutgers contacted the 6-foot-4 guard over the phone after he entered the transfer portal earlier this month. The relationship built from there, the basketball-obsessed coach and player hitting it off thanks to their mutual love of the game. It led to a visit to campus at the start of this week and a commitment by the end of his stay.
