If the season plays out as the most optimistic here think it will, won't they be coming around with their check books to lure away Miracle Worker Steve ? It usually happens at schools like RU when a program makes a sudden, dramatic improvement.

Miracle worker? Sudden, dramatic improvement? This is year No. 4 of what has been a steadily improving reclamation project.

The only wrong word in Kbee’s post is sudden. If a great season plays out, this will be a very dramatic improvement.

And YES, we can keep Steve. Rutgers will continue to pay him and his staff what they are worth, and continue to support Pike’s program.

Pike has EVERYTHING here he needs to succeed and maintain success, including a fan base that loves him, loves his players and has EXTREMELY reasonable expectations.

I'm not sure where he could go (short of the NBA) that he would consider an upgrade. He loves being at Rutgers. Loves the new practice facility and support from admin and donors. His son is a freshman at RU. He can't stop saying that the B1G is the best/toughest league in the country. Using his criteria, even though it might seem irrational to some, I'm not sure what college job would be considered an upgrade over Rutgers.

Something tells me he loves rebuild challenges so I don't see him going to a blueblood or bigger program. If and when he builds Rutgers into a regular tourney team I could see him take on another struggling program. But money talks so who knows

A few weeks ago the board narrative was Pike couldn’t recruit, missed Jay Young, and didn’t run a legit offense.

What a difference a few weeks can make!

Always makes me laugh when the same people who were bashing are now touting the team like they never had any doubts. (Not a shot at you OP, just general comment)

He Coaches in the Best league in the country in the best media market with still as-yet untapped potential.

Why Leave?

Money is always negotiable and this would be a great reason for an extension!

This is the answer.

Nobody at the college level in NJ really knows what sustained success could mean but the potential upside dwarfs anything the current bluebloods enjoy in terms of financial success and exposure. If a coach were to build a consistent championship level team in this media market there is no reason to ever leave. You would become a god that would be rammed down the country's collective throat at a pace double that of a Coach K., Saban etc.

It hasn't happened yet but oh boy when it does....

If he gets this team into the NCAA, he will have a lot of teams coming at him. He will also get the type of attention in our media that Greg did in 2006.
What will happen is that we will have to $tep it up with a big committment to him. And that is more than just salary. But the RAC is a special place when we have a good team. It would be very tough for a coach to leave as long as we step it up. I also feel like he would love to take what he built to the next level as well.

yup--some of our "pseudo experts" said he wasn't the answer--but this is normal for the grass is greener people-very loyal after a win-after a loss they abandon team in a second

I think that if pikiell does leave anytime soon, Jay Young should be our #1 coaching candidate and it's not even close

Yeah, I chose not to address keeping CSP because why leave. He has a good thing going there and plenty of support from the higher ups.

As far a fans go, didn't someone start a thread about a month ago questioning whether CSP was the right man for the job?

I've been following this team since Greacen and Armstead. It seems pretty sudden to me.
And I was here the day Tom Young left for greener pastures. One can only hope Pike isn't lured away by big money.

Yes, welcome to the Rutgers board. Enjoy your stay!

1. Rutgers is in a really good place in the BIG. So, the lure of a better conference is moot.
2. Whereas money was always an issue at Rutgers, the "all in" is certainly including the men's BB program.
3. Brand new practice facility was a real need and it has been answered.
4. Where many think the RAC should be replaced, I think Pike would disagree. The place has turned into a horror show for visitors. Certainly, you could get someone to integrate some improvements to make it better. As for seats, get them early if you want to get in!
Also, you can offset the smaller seating capacity by raising the prices. Winners always cost more.
5. Where the hell would you find a better geographical location????
6. In state talent level. Say no more.

I think I have made my case for him not leaving on his own accord.

Hes not going anywhere for a long time. Unless there is some weird scandal which i do not foresee with him.

Happy that Danny Hurley is at UConn. That's the only job that really scares me. He's not in line to be offered at blue-blood job at this point and we can (and seem committed to) pay him. I'm not worried.

That being said if that did come to pass I think Jay Young and Brandin Knight would be our most likely options.

UConn would be the only worry. Perhaps UCLA. I suppose if UNC, Kansas, or Duke jobs opened up. Don't see Calipari leaving.

What else is better than a B1G coaching job? Fla?

There are plenty of better B1G coaching jobs but B1G schools don't pluck other B1G coaches.

Indiana hired Crean from Marquette, then Miller from Dayton.

Michigan hired Beilein from West Virginia, then Howard from the NBA.

Ohio State hired Matta from Xavier, then Holtman from Butler.

Purdue hired Painter from Southern Illinois.

Illinois hired Weber from Southern Illinois, then Groce from Ohio, then Underwood from Oklahoma State.

I'll stop there. Pikiell isn't leaving for another B1G job. He might eventually down the road get plucked by a school in another conference but it won't be a B1G school. In the five-year future I don't think we have anything to worry about.

LOL. It was only a month or so ago that may people on this board were questioning whether Pike was the answer and would ever get it done. Let's at least see how this season goes before worrying about remote contingencies.

Yes. Someone did. Not sure who. There are some fans that panic and get negative very quickly. I just tend to ignore them.

easy to find out---go to pages on this board after a loss (see list on bottom) --you'd be surprised

Every possible stupid thing a human could believe, there is more than one person that believes it.

I learned a long time ago not to worry about something that may or may not happen in the future. Reason being if it didn't happen I just wasted previous time worrying over nothing. If it happens I will then confront and handle the situation

I guess the F in fan actually stands for fickle. I never go over to the Seton Hall board but made an exception after we beat them. I tell you, I wish I had a dollar for every time I saw the name "Willard". They were KILLING him. I mean it was getting personal. And now?
