GAME 16 PURDUE: I don't care anymore

Ok that’s not what was posted in the op though.

No one in their right mind would say right now that pikiell has “gutted the program”. Complete over reaction by Bac

He didn’t gut it but we are spiraling downward quickly.

Next year will be a few freshman who got little time outside Lathan (if they stick around) and a whole new roster.

It could be real ugly.

Agree. He didn’t gut it. Again..complete overreaction by Bac

I’m sick of his reaction everytime he fouls someone.

Looks like JWill rubbed off on him with this behavior.

I think tonight he was reacting to fouls that he felt weren't being called the other way. His fouls tonight were way over the top and would have been called in 99% of games... and he got away with plenty that weren't whistled. No reason to complain on the ones that got called - it was probably less than a third of the fouls he committed.

Who cares?? Pikiell is a coach that develops and doesnt need star recruits. His best seasons heave been with under the radar guys, that’s what he will need to get back to

It’s ridiculous you claimed he “gutted our program”.
Why is it ridiculous to say he “gutted” the program. The program had decent momentum coming into last year, he’s lost 15/20 games and has positioned Rutgers as the answer to a Trivia Question given his disgraceful ineptitude coaching a team with two lottery picks.

Can you please let this community know what Pike would need to do to effectively gut the program? If he burned down the practice facility as a demonstration of his solidarity with Pat Hobbs would that do it?

Get Real buddy.

Cause he didn’t gut the program. Where Rutgers is now as a program is light years ahead of where they were when took over. If the program is at that spot again..sure, that’s when I’ll say it’s gutted.

Yes, if we had confidence he could do better. After misses like Simpson, Woolfolk, and Reiber , he tried to upgrade and couldn’t do it. I have zero confidence he could assemble a good team in the new NIL/portal world.
Why wouldn't we want to at least try? We KNOW these players aren't good enough. Might as well take a shot at the unknown and potential to improve the roster

Pike's "way" is of a prior era - he needs to change a lot about his way of doing things to succeed in the current era. He's had success in the past finding the value guys that are better than their HS ratings and coaching them up over years... but that style is rapidly going extinct.

Those value guys you bring in will be looking at overvalued NIL promises from other schools pretty quickly and will likely cost you more to keep developing than it would to bring in guys who already cut their teeth elsewhere. Every year you need to rebuild a team from scratch unless you have overflowing coffers to retain all the guys you want to retain, which we most certainly do not.

The "pounding nails" culture of defense, where new guys slot into gaps between veterans steeped in the culture and system.... that's not going to work anymore. Coaches in this era need concepts that can be quickly understood and internalized by coming-in-cold-off-the-street players that don't even really know each other's names on the first day of camp. You can't rely on any year-over-year carry over - and the guys you do have will quickly look at greener pastures if you make their lives too uncomfortable.

Pike needs to do a lot of introspection this offseasons.

Explain how it’s light years better, we sucked in silence back then, we suck in a very public and visible way right now.

I would take the trajectory of the program under Eddie Jordan than this dumpster fire that is visible to every college basketball fan nationwide.

Pike would probably be happier at a small program where he could still coach that way. It doesnt seem he is a good fit for the NIL free agency era unfortunately

Those days are gone. There is no more "developing" a program. It's all about how well a coach does recruiting in the transfer portal.
That's why Jay Wright, Tony Bennett, and Laranaga all called it quits.
This new era is not what Pike was cut out for.

Agree with this.. but this way csn still work with the right roster.

This way doesn’t work with 2 top 5 lottery picks,

Get back to what got pike success here for next season. Under the radar guys that care about the program and not their own brand

1000% agree..which is why he’s struggling with 2 top 5 picks.

The old way can still work with the right approach - especially in basketball

You can feel that way but he lost me. I think he’s a terrible coach, perhaps the worst in the league. It takes him years to build a team and the college basketball. Environment has changed. You can’t invest time developing players for multiple years when they switch teams with ease now. It’s a sales job first now, and x and o job next. Developing players is way down on the list with NIL and the transfer portal. He’d make a good defensive assistant coach but he’s a dinosaur as a head coach. He could also do well at a lower level or mid major where development is more important.

Holy crap dude I lost you here. Did you even watch then?

We were one of the worst programs in all of D1 under Jordan.

There was no trajectory, we were rock bottom.

Put down the phone.

You can believe all that... you want these players returning? He gets lucky with one or two in the portal and we are better off

We won 1 conference game in those years….we are likely only going to win 1ish this year. We didn’t make the conference or NCAA tournament and we won’t make it this year.

We had a marquis win over #4 Wisconsin, we won’t have that this year.

What am I missing?

Just stop.

If you think we’ll only win 1 conference game this year let’s put some $ on it to the Rfund.

Lmfao that you would use the word trajectory with Eddie Jordan. There is no trajectory when you are one of, if not the worst program in all of D1.

Eddie Jordan didn’t coach and just collected his checks.

I like Pike. However, I put a lot of the blame on the staff. They did a bad job with roster construction in the portal. On offense, there seems to be no system of getting good shots. On defense, his scheme is not going to work with the current roster. He can play this type of defense with guys like Caleb, Cliff, Mag, and Young. But, they are all gone.

Not for Pike. He got lucky that Geo, RHJ, Caleb etc worked so hard and improved. He’s had a ton of 3 star misses over the last 3,4,5 years that bombed. Either he has lost his eye for talent or can’t develop players anymore. Either way he can’t repeat what he caught lightning in a bottle with during the first half of his tenure. And he can’t coach five stars. It’s over. Back to the cellar for RU.

to be fair this team will be a bad loss for some other schools. Still a good bet to win 4-5 conference games

At this point, those smaller programs have become feeders for larger programs. You get a kid to develop for 2 years, and then they hit the portal and cash in somewhere else. At this point the only programs that haven't yet fallen victim to this sort of churn are the Ivies.

Development is much harder when the players who show potential leave after a year

I almost didn't include Lathan, but he is a big man with offensive skill and that has value

Freshman bigs take time to develop typically and he lost a ton of weight. An off season of putting on more muscle and reshaping his body. A year of development. He could end up being a real asset
He will be an asset on the court for sure, the offseason just didn’t sit right with me. I’ll get over it if he’s good and less than $1 million to keep though

My understanding is Pike might have promised him a starting job/role. If that’s true he’s as much to blame
The sad part is, he probably would’ve had the same (or maybe a slightly reduced role) if we brought in a transfer. Pretty sure Ogbole would’ve been moved down in the rotation by now

I won't be there no more
So get out of my way
Let me by
I got better things to do with my time
I don't care anymore
Do you hear, I don't care anymore
I don't care no more
You listening? I don't care no more
No more

Well yeah I will still use my tickets this year and go to the RAC but that lovin feelin for this program is gone gone gone. A complete horror show in 16 episodes. It was gone weeks ago but now we can officially bury this corpse of a season and please please can some of you holding out hope have some dignity and just LET IT GO already. This is a bad team. They are not well coached. They have two very talented players and little else. They do not do anything as a unit which constitutes a team. There is no DREAM BIG DREAMS from 89 coming nor a 91 turnaround leading to a conference championship. In fact they are getting progressively worse with each game and now have lost 8 of their last 12. Going bac 2 last season Coach Pikiells team has lost 15 of their last 24......RUTGERS HAS LOST 15 OF THEIR LAST 24 BASKETBALL GAMES....it hasnt been brought up here people havent been paying attention but the program is in FREEFALL.

Ive moved beyond Rutgers will miss the NCAA for the 3rd consecutive season and now focused on how Pikiell gutted the program by making a deal with the devil. 2 one and dones and for what....to sit 17th place in the Big 10. Its beyond comprehension. Complete and utter failure on all levels and now where the hell does the program go from here. Pike will be back next year unless he steps aside. However now even I have moved towards the idea that if next year isnt a success that will be it. I do not see a 2nd year after coming. I do not care what the contract says. Thius is real bad folks. 15 games left and yes this abyss can get lower. My strategy is to care less and less about this team which right now is my least favorite team since Jordans last so about a decade. There is little to like about this team because it is not a TEAM. It is some funky amalgamation of one and dones, should not be here, never was, and do not cares. Not what we were promised and not something I am interested in investing my emotions toward.

I do not have the answers but tonight was complete garbage for a 9th year coach to have his team put out that kind of feeble performance and taking a giant leap backwards to the Fred Hill error in terms of excitement. It makes me not want to care and that is where I am at right now. A season lost and unrecoverable and the cherry on the top is that any legit talent isnt coming back. The 2 guys that matter are gone and anyone left are simply not good enough to build around. Thats the conundrum...just what is next, what is the program building for and how can it even take a beath of life in the next 2 and half months
Unfortunately, not a single player on the team really even has an attachment to Rutgers as a student. Like you said, one and done freshmen, bad portal pickups here for 1 semester so far, and freshman recruits likely to chase money from other schools after season. So no one really cares about representing the school.

You’re really saying his success was based on luck?? My word…..

I agree: Geo Ron, Caleb worked hard. They were our leaders that had to work hard…which rubs to the entire team.

Do you think Ace and Dylan really have to work hard??

No..they just need to continue to do what they’ve been doing and they’re set. Again…not the type of players, it seems, that Pike excels with
