GAME 16 PURDUE: I don't care anymore

Just some perspective, too, on player retention/etc. Painter has done a great job - and Pike credited Purdue's NIL Collective prior to the game.

# of minutes/gamesplayed under Painter for his rotation:
2963 min / 90 games - Braden Smith
2594 min / 90 games - Fletcher Loyer
1705 min / 121 games - Caleb Furst
1532 min / 90 games - Trey Kaufman Renn
820 min / 55 games - Camden Heide
583 min / 47 games - Myles Colvin
261 min / 16 games - Gicarri Harris (Fr)
240 min / 16 games - CJ Cox (Fr)
148 min / 25 games - Will Berg
112 min / 14 games - Raleigh Burgess (Fr)

Every single one of these guys has only ever played for Purdue - not a single portal player in their 10 man rotation. Furst/Kaufman-Renn in their 4th year, Smith/Loyer in their 3rd, and Colvin/Burg in their 2nd.... with 3 freshmen working their way in.

Compare to Rutgers this year, and the # of minutes/games played under Pikiell
1009 min / 47 games - Jamichael Davis
683 min / 27 games - Jeremiah Williams
488 min / 15 games - Dylan Harper (Fr)
465 min / 14 games - Ace Bailey (Fr)
365 min / 16 games - Jordan Derkack
313 min / 16 games - Lathan Sommerville (Fr)
308 min / 26 games - Emmanuel Ogbole
233 min / 14 games - Zach Martini
227 min / 16 games - Tyson Acuff
51 min / 5 games - Dylan Grant (Fr)
199 min / 16 games - PJ Hayes

The only player we have that has even seen a full season's worth of games (30) under Pike is Davis. And half of these guys will be gone in March with a new crop coming next season.
That’s a helluva hole to dig out of

This doesn’t make sense from a basketball perspective but from a personal perspective I’m not thrilled with Lathan. If what was said on here at the time is accurate, he played a major role in hurting our front court this year.
Pike's reaction to that was that of a coach with no backbone - kid cared more about himself than winning. Should have been maybe RU isn't the place for you.

I almost didn't include Lathan, but he is a big man with offensive skill and that has value

Freshman bigs take time to develop typically and he lost a ton of weight. An off season of putting on more muscle and reshaping his body. A year of development. He could end up being a real asset
If the rumor was accurate (and my recollection is that a comment from Pike directly supported it), NIL is his top priority as he clearly wanted to be sure he would get the opportunity put up that stats needed to get paid. He’s likely not going to be worth the ticket he’s going to demand is my prediction because his rim protection skills still aren’t close to where they need to be to make us competitive.

Give me Grant back. He’s the type of player that could thrive under Pikiell and would be fun to root for.

I wouldn’t even care if we lost Lathan at this point. I don’t see his defense getting to where it needs to be as a 5 and he’s not a 4.

This 100%. He can score but he can’t stop anyone in the paint. Big problem.

Yeah Lathan is hard to root for.

Yeah - it’s hard to get past him holding us back from bringing in experience. Not having it is really hurting us despite Lathan filling up his own personal stat sheet.

Yup - exactly. Pike was scared to be left with nothing. He should’ve realized at that time that sometimes less is more. Being a team player is important.

That’s how Greg would have played it, I would imagine

alarmingly seems to be getting worse as the season progresses
I mean it "seems to be getting worse" because it was a mediocre to kinda bad team consisting of one of the best players in the country + a Fred Hill roster and the former has been sick and barely able to play.

Once he gets better we'll be proudly mediocre to kinda bad once more.

I don’t think we were mediocre with a healthy Dylan, we prevailed in epic death struggles against bad teams, at best we might be less bad than some of the bad teams we beat going forward.

Well that’s why I said “mediocre to fairly bad”. It’s not a good team by power conference standards. But it’s still like a #75 team or whatever, no one is walking into the RAC taking a win for granted and we sure as hell aren’t going 1-19.

But Dylan is like the whole team, of course we look like absolute death without him. You can’t really draw any conclusions about that except that it has all but extinguished any outside chance we had to get an at-large bid.

Seems we are judging Grant on a very limited amount of play
He may turn out to be what we need
I need to see more

Who cares?? Pikiell is a coach that develops and doesnt need star recruits. His best seasons heave been with under the radar guys, that’s what he will need to get back to

It’s ridiculous you claimed he “gutted our program”.
Likely two years in a row of almost complete roster turnover and 3 years of missing the tournament. No real reason for hope beyond blind faith going forward. What exactly do you consider gutting the program and how far away do you see us being from that?

Cause he didn’t gut the program. Where Rutgers is now as a program is light years ahead of where they were when took over. If the program is at that spot again..sure, that’s when I’ll say it’s gutted.
He took us from abysmal to mediocre and we are sliding backwards. People need to stop being so impressed by that

It’s gutted and it happened over the last 3 years. Next years team has JMIKE as Pikes lone guy. A non D1 player as the only guy.

When you watch next years lineup only 1 player will have been recruited by Pike and has been here 3 years. The rest will be transfers and freshman.

No upperclassmen teaching the culture and program. All hired guns and freshman! It’s the actual definition of gutted.

Man has there ever been such a rapid 180 of a program before? We flew too close to the sun

I’m with you. I don’t care anymore either. The sooner this season ends the better. I’ll never really even root for Dylan and Ace in the NBA either since they didn’t accomplish anything here. This might seem harsh, but I just don’t care.

Didn’t realize mediocre teams got at large bids to the tourny, new one for me - I guess we each have a different definition of mediocre

Im not in the prediction game - no clue how far away we are. But our program right now is not gutted. That’s all I’m saying.
