Cluess Top Target

So you are saying that Masiello is going to hypothetically be able to fill a legit power 5 roster at Rutgers with blue chip choir boy non jucos and non transfers? Leapfrogging us above every other established local bball school. While Cluess only has the ability to recruit from Rikers Island Junior College?

No I never said that Masiello will get all blue chip players. There are also plenty of transfers and Juco's without off-court issues, so your argument is way off base. Masiello will certainly improve recruiting and get some impressive players, but I won't sit here and say he'll have top 20 classes out of the gate. Most important about Masiello is he will win with less. His system and coaching style will result in a team that is a nightmare for opponents to play against. While he won't get 5 stars out of the gate, the team will be immediately competitive. Cluess relies on simply having superior talent, and he can only achieve that by bringing in questionable recruits with character issues. If you want that after going through Flood, then go ahead.

Why no mention of Brandin Knight, Asst at Pitt the past 8 years under Jamie Dixon ? NJ guy, AA at Pitt and young enough to recruit and relate to today's players.

If we are looking at a pool of candidates from Asst coaches he may be worth a look.

Were B10 we can do better as long as we pay the going rate for a coach. Iona 0-10 in last 10 ncaa games, product of a crap league and schedule not talent or coaching.

Is Masiello unhirable with the resume issue, ties to Lville/Pitino and rumors that his Manhattan contract can't be bought out?

I heard the Cluess thing a few days ago. Really hope that is not true. That is not the program builder we need. Not a guy that is going to galvanize the base to get $'s raised for the facilities we need. Really feel we would be back to square one in 4-5 years with that type of a hire.

I'd much prefer going high risk/high reward with a guy like Boyle. It's not the perfect hire, but at least he has a little juice.

Whoa. Nice job playing loose with the facts. Laury was charged with a misdemeanor for getting into a fight with his roommate. Charges were later dropped. He's on the Sixers' D-League team now. Washington shoplifted a couple of videos from a video store a few years ago. Total $17. He went to a Junior College when ASU walked away. He transferred to Iona this year. Cluess didn't take him right after the incident. Neither of these incidents is anything to brag about, but they don't reflect as badly on Cluess as some here want to suggest they do. Cluess has given some guys second chances, and recruited plenty of kids from high school or prep schools, not just JuCos. Other than the Laury incident all have been good citizens. Not sure why its so terrible to take a transfer like Jones from Arizona, or Bessick from James Madison, or Rountree this year from Wake as a graduate student or Mike Poole (gasp) from Rutgers. That's up to you guys to judge.

BTW some of you guys forgot to mention the Lindbergh kidnapping.

No we don't 'need' a team to compete in the BIG. We 'want' a team that can compete in this league . Clues is a solid coach . Don't listen to the people on this board , many are good people but don't know crap about college sports . That's why I don't come here often anymore . Some clowns on this board didn't want us to hire cal, Huggins or mccaffery years ago . Even a mod here wanted to stick with FHJ and didn't want to give mccaffery a look . Trust me, I remember this because I posted the night of Siena's win over Ohio state in the tourney for BM to call Fran and a mod here said FHJ was a better coach . No joke .
Point is this board has some good people and good mods , but many don't know much about winning . Cluess is competent enough to get this thing tuned around . Trust me .

I didn't say he couldn't coach. That's only one part of being THE coach at a P5 school. LOL...I have a 750 record over my 11 years of coaching my son/daughter's rec teams does that make ME qualified? Huggins was a winner at Cincy. A no brainer. The FHJ thing was a joke. So we agree.

And all of those reasons are why Rutgers has got to get this right. No more chances. Both on and off the court or in the closets.

I don't want a so called "team" made up of 1 star and a bunch of guys trying to see who can run down the court faster to get up a shot. I want BBall IQ, passing, defense, foul shooting, and all around good fundamental basketball. Decent students is ok.

You realize even MAAC fans laugh at Rutgers basketball, right?

Two points
1: The "sources" is almost certainly Cluess agent, or somone in his camp.
2: Anybody that thought a P-5 experienced head coach with a winning record was walking in here was deluding themselves.

Good job, I think ( not sure) I read somewhere outside this board Brandin Knight being mentioned as a possibility along with the KY assistant and the one at the Hall.

I guess you can consider yourself a media source now [cheers]

I brought up Brandon Knight's name in another thread yesterday as a name that popped up. Nothing more from there.

No one is ever happy unless they hire the coach they want. People didn't want Hurley because he never brought a team to the ncaa tournament. Now that we are looking at a coach who has made it to the big dance three out of the past 5 years and the other two years he still won the MAAC, people are making new excuses. Unreal. I trust Hobbs will hire a great coach to right the ship. Cluess is a very good coach and would be a great option.

I wanted Hurley, and now those DILUSIONAL folks who thought we were so much better than Hurley, can deal with what happens when we didn't land him (F him btw, we did all we could). But we are not going to get far with Clues if he doesn't play defense and can't recruit. Should have just kept EJ. It is a shame that Hurley obviously mislead Hobbs prior to EJ being fired.

I'm going to hit the snooze button on this program for another 3 years if this is the guy.

If Hobbs dips into a pool of qualified assistant coaches like he did when he plucked Chris Ash from Ohio State to be his head football coach last December, Pittsburgh's Brandin Knight, Seton Hall's Shaheen Holloway and Kentucky's Kenny Payne could draw consideration.

For the record I'm not one of the nuns/chicken little/tail-between-legs guys that is so worried b/c he recruited rough around the edges type kids.

My issue is that the guy won't be able to rely on such kids here b/c they won't be eligible or won't cut it b/c this is the B1G. He can't grab the rejects from the bigger leagues anymore.

So if the guy can't go out and recruit, which is a HUGE part of what Rutgers needs. AND he can't play defense, which is a huge thing we need to do to compete again, then the guy is a bad fit. So stop concentrating solely on this Mike Rice nonsense already. If Hobbs is taking that so much into consideration with Clues, Masiello, or any other guy its too much.

Anyway, The guy is a bad fit for basketball reasons from recruiting to style of play. NEXTTTT
