Coach Pike made a bad call with Mulcahy

Are we talking about the play where he held on to it for like 5 seconds or the bad bouce pass to Myles with 1:45 left

Ill shut down that possession. I don't have any problem with the ball in Paul's hands. He is stronger with the ball than Caleb. Paul looks to create for others and does a good job of probing and keeping his dribble.

I would have liked to see yeboah get the ball on the block.

These are learning curve games for a LOT of this roster. It's is 1 of 10 road games where you are going to make mistakes.

As a friendly reminder, 4 sophs, 1 transfer junior in a new system of half court basketball, 1 true frosh guard and 1 grad transfer who hasn't had high level games in the B1G on the road.

This roster got a very good test from Illinois and RU showed very well on the road. Mulcahy's lost possessions are a learning curve that happens. Same with Myles Johnson, who has to understand his impact on the team and foul trouble.

I learned a lot of good things about this program today that will carry over. The most important thing is they competed for 40 minutes and we have 3 dominant defensive guards once Baker gets back.

Get the split of home and home when Illinois comes to the RAC..... and my strong guess is we will see Illinois in the B1G tournament as well.

Paul will learn and develop, he's taken HUGE strides in a few weeks.

I was talking about a different play. Rewatched that one, was bad. The defeensve possession before that you will know why Paul was put back in the game
Yes, okay, I know what you're talking about now. Yes, I absolutely agree with you.

Yeah, but so did the entire team. The entire team played out of sorts in that game. I thought and still think that was a bad loss by us even if it was away. I was not impressed with Pitt at all. And yes, I know they just beat UNC, but UNC with the injuries right now are very pedestrian.

This is still a young team going through some growing pains without Geo. They'll be fine.

Everyone is raging on Pike bringing Mulcahy in with 2:09. I do not have a problem but he was sitting on the sideline waiting to come in for 4 minutes at the scorer’s table as there was no stoppage until 2:09. My problem there is not running a Two man game with Jacob and Ron going to the block. Jacob was hitting a few outside shots and they would have overplayed him and he could have blown by them to finish or if picked up , I like my chances with Ron in the mid range even though he did not have a good game. Giving the ball to Paul and allowing that dribble to go on for 10 seconds was bad. Pike was right there a timeout was in order once the break down occurred.

Also that call on Myles was bullshit and I know that is a point of emphasis and ourguards do not normally wait until he is set before going, but they showed the replay and he was totally stopped and set. Crucial call there against us. Refs were not much of a factor today except for that one .

For almost 40 full minutes we played elite defense and in my opinion are still the better team. Except for Felix’s 3 drives where we lost him or did not stop him early, Illinois had almost no open looks all day. The help side defense was outstanding all day.

The other area we got hurt was we did not defensive rebound and get some 50/50 balls as their offensive rebounds allowed them to get extra shots which they converted 3-5 times which cost us the game .

Finally , we missed a ton of open shots, mostly Akwasi, who fell n love with the 3 after the first 2 went down and missed the next 8 shots, and Ron and Caleb missed looks as well .Most of our misses were open looks. All of Illinois looks were contested except for Griffin’s three in transition. Even Cofi’s 3 foot shots were contested. Really incredible outstanding defensive effort as evidenced by the Illinois stats dept. saying it was their first win ever scoring under 60, shooting less than 30% from 2 and less than 20 % from three

. Clearly , Illinois got lucky to win and I am confident we will beat them by double digits at home and we are the better team . We neutralized their 2 pros, Ayo and Cofi like no one else has done the whole year.

how can you say we are the better team when they shredded us on the boards and despite them shooting like crap at home, they still gutted out the win. I think these teams are very even and the game at the RAC will be another slugfest. Illinois didnt get lucky..that is pure bunk

He played Mulcahy way too much in that game he is just not ready for this he slows the whole offense down every time he comes in the game
He does slow the game down but at times that is why Pike inserts him into the offense. It's often when the offense is out of sinc and there needs to be some semblance of set plays , etc.

You can disagree but go to the Illini boards and most of them thought they got lucky to win. You almost never win a game when the other team forces you to shoot like that. Why don’t don’t you go find some other examples of other teams winning with those %’s. You will be looking for a while.

Op is absurd. One possession as a basis is downright silly. I thought it was a good move to get him in there because Montez continues to drive into the paint and have no shot. He did it on like three possessions and that was crushing. The move to mocha is exactly what I would’ve done

RU was 20-59

Illinois was 18-63

I really do not see a big difference

both teams were horrible. RU got worse after the first 5 minutes. Illinois got a bit better as the game wore on.

yes which was big because we went up 2 but on the previous play he had a horrible move to the hoop amongst trees that had no hope and led to a 3 point play for Illinois

his inconsistency is wild

Mathis did hit a big 3 pointer

But his forays into the lane have been awful. When he goes to the floater it works. But he had 3 real momentum killing possessions late. My guess was Pike was thinking like me and get Mulcahy in for him. Mulcahy did have a bad possesion. But geez it was one possesion.

We lost the offensive rebounds 16-10 but overall we only got out rebounded 44-41. We did not get crushed on the boards.

we were outrebounding them 24-23 to start the 2nd half and then we were outboarded 18-9 and at one point it was 14 to 4 on the offensive boards, the final gap closed but the damage was done

Agree. There was a key stretch there that was bad.

that was a turning point....in the wrong direction

Mathis came up big at the RAC late and he did have that big shot today but again the issue with him is consistency. I dont like relying on him for hitting 3s. In fact the last 6 minutes, Mathis took alot of shots...he was 1-5 shooting...Myles didnt take a shot after he made a dunk at 6:42

Read the threads on this board and you'd think Mulcahy was outclassed and should have his minutes reduced going forward. He didn't have one of his more effective games, you could say that about a few guys. He'll be fine and we need to trust Young a little more now that he's been the spark for the offense in consecutive games with a good game prior to that.

They shot that% because we were in their grill. At least half of our shots were open shots that we missed or short armed. They played good defense. We played elite defense. We settled especially Akwasi for too many threes and that is why there was a foul disparity. We did not challenge them enough. Ron didn’t either demand the ball or get put in position to unleash his mid range game. There wasn’t a minute of that game that I thought we would lose. Not sure what game you were watching but Illinois was fighting uphill all day.

Ayo 18 pts. 7 rebounds. And scored Illinois last 8 points. Cockburn 11 pts. 17 rebounds. Not sure that is neutralizing.

Really? This game was nip and tuck most of the way and the lead changed several times in the 2nd half...dont know how you could we had this in the bag

Mulcahy plays his style of ball well but he needs to shoot to keep the defense honest with him. His one basket in the first half was when the defense dared him to take it to the tin and he did with the scoop layup. He dribbles so well to get into the lane but doesn’t stop to shoot the easy jumper. I’m sure he made those shots in high school and can make half of them. Why not take those shots? He is looking to pass the ball too much

Mulcahy coming in with 2 minutes to go was questionable and boom turnover.

Game was lost because we didn’t execute at end of game with Mulcahy turnover and Myles foul.
Game is never lost in the end of the game. It just appears that way. Think what 2 missed FT's by Harper and 1 blocked shot called goal tending
on Harper would have done to the outcome of the game.
I remember years ago where one of our players right off the tip drove to the hoop uncontested and had a slam that hit the rim and went into the cheap seats.
Lost by 1 point.

This happens with a lot of freshmen. They defer to older players until they feel comfortable. When the coaches, and more importantly, his teammates drill it into him that he must shoot when the shot is there, he'll start shooting more.

Ayo ‘s points were at the foul line late. He hit just a few jumpers all day and maybe one three off an offensive rebounding kick out . Cockburn has been a double double machine and unstoppable down low and we challenged 90% of his shots and blocked a few. A lot of his rebounds was due to Myles taking himself out of the game with his fouls and our missing a ton of open shots. There were few where he rebounded and went back up for points. Try to watch Cofi the rest of the way. He will likely be double teamed by most teams. We did the best job on him in man defense all year.
