Coaching Carousel 2021

May seem kind of early for this but figure you can throw any coaching news in one thread.

Guess it's kind of "normal" these days for mid season firings to take place. Also little less unusual these days, he's actually fired mid season year 3. Wonder if Sonny Dykes at SMU would be interested, his father coached at TT. He's got a good thing going now though.

Jeff Traylor at UTSA also mentioned.

Art Briles is radioactive but wonder if they might try for guys from his staff who have done good jobs with other high powered offenses since. Kendal his son now Arkansas OC or Jeff Lebby his son in law Ole Miss OC.

Considering the state of the coaching news the last few days, perhaps the title of the thread might be changed to the "Coaching Tilt-A-Whirl 2021"? 😏

In more pedestrian and earthly coaching search news that RU fans can relate to:

Hadn't seen his name attached to VT. State of Virginia been good to Franklin assistants. Ricky Rahne went to ODU a little while back too.

Kelly trying to keep the band together. Rees is a ND grad and former qb for Kelly, would he leave his alma mater? Unless he gets the HC spot no way to know if the next coach would keep him. Same for Freeman, although Cincy HC spot could be in his future if ND turns to Fickell.

OMG an actual reasonable contract lol.

They play Michigan State early next season. If they win, a contract extension for 10 yrs., $96 million (since he'd clearly be better than Tucker) will be on the table.

IDK. Other than USC and Stanford, do any of the PAC12 State Universities pay that well?

And to a point, David Shaw is making $8.9 million/year. He had a nice run 2011-16, but last 3 years:

2019: 4-8/3-6
2020: 4-2/4-2
2021: 3-9/2-7

I think next year could be a hot seat year for him.

Article here summarizes head coach salaries in PAC12. 3rd is Chip Kelly at $5.6 Million.
Chip lit it up at Oregon for 4 years, but at UCLA:
3-9/3-6
4-8/4-5
3-4/3-4
8-4/6-3

Has Chip turned the corner? Who knows. But do his results justify the 3rd highest salary in the PAC12?

Kyle Whittingham at $5.2 million. He's been at Utah since 2004, and in the last 4 years has finished 1st in the PAC12 South 3 years, including this year.

#5 is Cristobal at $4.4 million. After that, salaries drop below $4 Million/year

Sorry for the little sidetrack…

I don’t follow NFL so had no idea this kind of money was being thrown around. Forget coaching go into broadcasting lol. Is Romo or any broadcaster so good to be worth so much wow.

There is so much money being thrown around it’s mind-blowing.

Back to your regularly scheduled programming….

Oregon State football coach Jonathan Smith’s new contract will pay $22.6 million during the final six years, includes a salary bump for 2021 and an automatic contract extension for performance.

The contract, obtained by The Oregonian/OregonLive through a public records request, calls for Smith to make $3.25 million in 2022, $3.35 million in 2023, $3.45 million in 2024 and $3.65 million in 2025. In 2026, Smith’s salary jumps to $4.35 million, and then to $4.55 million in 2027.

When you see these numbers it makes you realize that Schiano could end up being a steal. So many of these coaches flame-out and are almost entirely dependent on recruiting classes which vary from year to year.

Money wise I don’t mind GS’ deal, length wise wasn’t a fan. I don’t like initial deals longer than 5 years unless there’s a manageable out for a school especially a cash strapped one like us. For GS I think we have to pay around 76% of the remaining salary to a max of 24M or so. To me that’s a lot for us. Hopefully he works out but if he doesn’t we could be stuck in a deal longer than we want. With an 8 yr deal, I suspect he’ll be here 6 years just about regardless of results. Hopefully, it’s all moot. Unfortunately, it’s just the way ADs operate these days.

My mind always works from the what can go wrong perspective and can I deal with it if it does.

Are those cost of living raises? 😂 While "undperpaid" compared to his peers, that's nice $$$ if you can get it.

That, an considering who the alternatives were at the time Greg was hired (I started a thread on this), despite the way this season ended, Greg is the right person and a good deal. Using hindsight, Bielema may/may not have been an equal or better choice, but the fan base was correctly vocal that given his track record in bring RU out of the basement in his first tenure and his NJ roots, he was the right person for the job. Similarly, for Bielema, he's an Illinois native, and he may do better than previous coaches. He is off to a good start, but RU still beat him this year!

I think the ND AD will pin his hopes on Fickell and if he has to wait till Cincy is out of the NC running he will.
If Fickel stays at Cincy,Freeman ND's DC will get the job
Fickell goes to ND ,Freeman to Cincy as HC or follow Kelly to LSU if someone other then him is named ND's HC

Romo is. I don’t watch much NFL but I will watch games he’s doing. He’s the anti John Madden. He really breaks the game down and you can actually learn watching him.

Some candidates brought up by Feldman for the Duke job. Army HC Jeff Monken, Miss State WR coach Steve Spurrier Jr., Michigan OC Josh Gattis, A&M DC Mike Elko (I'd think he'd be looking for a bigger job), ECU HC Mike Houston, Ok State DC Jim Knowles, Coastal Carolina HC Jamey Chadwell

In a funny twist of fate, New Mexico State, coached by Jerry Kill, plays Minnesota in their opening game!

"Nearly five years ago, former Gophers football coach Jerry Kill, upset with how athletic director Mark Coyle fired Tracy Claeys, vowed in an interview with KSTP-AM 1500 that, "I won't be stepping a foot back in that stadium.'' That promise is going to be very difficult to keep now that Kill has been hired as New Mexico State's coach and the Aggies will play the Gophers on Sept. 1, 2022, at Huntington Bank Stadium.

"You don't think I haven't had a million text messages about that? I'll get booed out of the stadium, probably,'' said Kill"

My speculation is Bob's brother Mark will go to Oklahoma .
Stoops is a brand name there and Mark has done a heck of a job at Kentucky.
He knows the SEC recruiting area , which will help the Sooner when they move in.

He just signed a contract extension with Kentucky so it won’t be him. I posted it somewhere in this thread.

That’s got to sting for Fickell. ND opens up and I’m sure he’d love the chance but playoff run in the way. Think ND’s playoff chance also got in the way. Naming Freeman quickly to try and keep continuity and take some doubt out of the committees mind with regards to losing Kelly.

IIRC, Cincinnati is home for Fickle. He will be fine, and there will be other opportunities. If Ryan Day loses to Michigan again, he will be fired.

That’s the thing he’s as hot as can be now…can’t predict if he’ll still be hot later. These top level jobs don’t open every day either.

Oklahoma is still open, I thought Mark Stoops (with the family connection) could be possible there but he just signed an extension with Kentucky. He’s done a really good job at Kentucky, has made them relevent in the SEC.

Damn autocorrect on phone don't like Fickell. It either changes it to the adjective or suggests the past tense of the f word.🤷‍♂️
