Dear Coach Chris Ash: We hate Penn State, please destroy them this year!!

With a coaching staff that can coach.
I think you overrate coaching my friend... Flood didn't tell the defense to let Barkley run all over us last year, their OLine bullied us. Ash won't fix that overnight with the same group of players

I don't think so....I've seen too many examples of a good coaching staff coming in, making drastic changes like Ash is doing, and seeing a team look completely different. This past season saw several examples of this. Now, will it happen? No one will know but I would put Ash up against Franklin any day of the week and twice on Saturdays.

Better tackling WILL help. Not running into the line of scrimmage when the have committed to 9 in the box WILL help. Doesn't mean we WILL win, but it has to help. LOL.

Ped caught us at the exact right time last year. It was the apex of the drama. Not saying we would have won, but that game was always flawed before the first whistle.

Coach Ash isn't a miracle worker. Lack of talent across the board, changing systems, all in the hardest division of college football. If he is beating Penn St. who had a 3 year head start in his first year with those obstacles, then we have a live one.

I want to see a clear strategy and effort. Making a bowl and opening up recruiting lines will be a good year.

The post above is wrong, with Flood and Rossi's "defense" the strategy was to let them march right down the field, but hey we'll try to stop them once they get in field goal range.

I heard Flood literally say he will not adjust the defensive schemes based on who we play on his radio show. Yes, he literally said this.

So I, and others, do expect with competent coaching our defense will actually try to stop teams and tackle people.

Coaching matters. But a bunch of other stuff does also.
A decided schematic advantage can only get you so far.

I don't give a crap how well they can coach, we're changing schemes and don't have the offensive personnel yet that the coaches want. Remember KC and his Sunshine Band? Part of the failure of that move was that we didn't have the right personnel, especially on the offensive line.

The funny thing is that I think our defense will be significantly better than the 2015 flavor. We lost a ton in 2 key areas for the 2015 season, DL and DB's.

Due to graduation and injuries, we were down 4 defensive linemen, with a 5th one so injured (Turay) that he was pretty much ineffective. This coming season we get him and Hamilton back, and the other d linemen have had a year's worth of experience and another year in the S&C program. So I expect the DL as a whole to be much improved.

DB's - we all know the situation - we were down 8 DB's due to graduation, stupidity and thuggery. Then we lost a 9th halfway through the season due to injury (Jacobs). We were playing true freshmen who never should have seen the field this past season. So I'm expecting our DB's to be improved this year - not earth shattering, but not the disaster we just went through. And with 2-3 DB coaches on the staff, along with an additional year of S&C, those freshmen will definitely show better on the field.

Well, if you are referring to talent, let me ask this question....what was the huge difference between our 2014 game with PU and our 2015 game? It wasn't talent. We should have won in 2014 but yet got blown out in 2015. Why was that? Could it have been losing our entire secondary, losing our HC (maybe addition by subtraction) a few days before, arrests, injuries to key players, and playing in a primetime night game in Happy Valley?
My point is that when people say "don't hold your breath" as if PSU is some kind of insurmountable obstacle, I laugh because PSU ain't all that at all. They are led by an incompetant a**-clown. Have some faith.

You should give a crap because that was our greatest deficiency in 2015. If you fix your greatest deficiency, you have a chance. Talent, btw, was NOT our greatest deficiency. And offensive weapons? Sure, we don't have a loaded roster designed for the power spread yet, but we certainly have coachable talent. If Mehringer is able to get them up to speed, who is to say that Rettig, Grant, Agudosi, Martin, Hicks and co. can't very successful?

Here we go again, hanging the old staff.

Yes, the coaching left something to be desired this past season on offense. We really needed Friedgen back, but he couldn't stand McDaniels.

And let's be clear: we lost a LOT on offense due to graduation. I have documented it elsewhere, but, in short, we lost Nova, Burton, Kroft, Turzilli, Bujari, Alexander and Johnson. Are you even aware of how much starting experience that was?

College Football is a volatile game and trying to make predictions is tough. Diagnosing the cause of outcomes after the fact not real easy either.

Don't disagree with that. But the idea that a new coach will mean drastically different results in 9 months is a little over valued by some on this board at the moment. I've got plenty of faith, even some optimism, but not expecting a 180 degree turn.

With Franklin as the Penn St. HC they can be beat by RU in 2016.
But can't say how good a HC Ash is before he coaches his first game as the RU FB HC and that's one of the keys to beating the Nits.
Hopefully he'll prove to be a very good one and his game-day coaching will help RU beats Penn St and Maryland in 2016. Plus coaching up the players talents so they play to the best of their capabilities.
Along with having a W-L record ( better than 6-6) that gets RU an invite to a decent bowl game .

Coaching matters a lot; we will lose to them by less than we lost last year.

Fair enough and I agree with you. I am just baffled at some who have seemingly thrown in the towel for the 2016 PSU game (in Piscataway). I am expecting more like 140 degrees

We play then late enough in the year that we will have a lot of things figured out by then. They weren't a wry goo team last season and now they lost their DC, Hackenberg, a few top players on defense and will be coming to our house.

And I don't understand the idea that coaching isn't at fault for our performance last season. Flood didn't tell us to let Barkley run all over us but I'm pretty sure he prepared us for the game during the week, and did a horrible job

While true we did get bullied, with a healthy Hamilton, and another year experience for Wilkins, Joseph, Pinnix-Odrick and Mera, hopefully that doesn't happen as much this year.

The 2016 game is in November, no way it will be that hot. [roll]

That was our first game without Carroo and Flood was suspended on Wednesday. And it was a night game at their place. We saw what happened when they were here, if not for our two guys hitting each other on their biggest gain of the night with 2 mins left. We shall see this year.

And the yr before we outplayed psu and gave them the game. Psu has not been a power in decades.

To me a perfect season this year would be kick-ass victories over PSU and Michigan. I don't care if we lose every other game as long we beat the living crap out of those 2 butt wipes.

jimmy “milk dud” franks has now contacted 5 PITT commits to take a visit to creepy valley and all have said NO. UPS is starting to doubt why they committed 25.5M to him. Their good recruiting class has lost 6 top commits and they had no back up plan so they are desperate.

Let’s both kick their ass this season!
