Dennis Dodds: New report on possible further B1G expansion

I saw that report but I take it with a grain of salt because it's Dodd. I've always thought they will add more from the west but it's a matter of when. Will they try to squeeze it in before 2024 or will they wait til a later date and a tv contract renewal. Getting ESPN or Amazon involved for another window is probably the key.

Surprised though that the article said a figure less than 100M would be enough to push B10 presidents to make a move. That's only like 20-25M per school if it's 4 schools...if it's just 2 I can understand the number. If it's 4, I'd think the figure would be closer to 200-250M.

From the article:

The Big Ten's continued pursuit of four Pac-12 schools is leading to concern that another round of expansion could collapse the Pac-12, industry sources tell CBS Sports. This as Big Ten commissioner Kevin Warren continues to seek an offer from Amazon, or potentially another partner, for additional Big Ten football media rights revenue.

An offer deemed substantial enough would likely convince Big Ten presidents that California, Oregon, Stanford and Washington would be valuable additions to the league from the Pac-12. That figure is believed to be less than $100 million annually.

Surprised regional nbc sports dosent take more games

Rutgers benefits if we break away from current divisions. That would be huge for us competitively.

but I don’t love the idea of having an even harder time of ever getting prime network slots. But I guess compared to the last decade or more that’s so rarely happened anyways.

There is almost nothing new in this article. He just re-hashed what was already known.

I mean I'm supposed to feel like a loser, but getting some competitive games against Cal & Stanford while still getting paid is fine by me.

Cal could even be a nice rivalry.
I see an Amazon late Saturday package, tied to additional PAC12 additions, being a win for Rutgers.

-Games at 10:30 at night on Amazon (when little else is happening) will draw the eyes of more national cfb fans than games played on BTN, Peacock, etc during the day when 4-5 more prominent games are happening on other networks.

-we would have whatever talent Amazon hires to do their college football games (and they haven’t skimped) calling our games, rather than the Beth Mowins/Matt Millen types we are normally stuck with.

A few Amazon games a year would be fine.

I honestly see Cal as basically our West Coast brother. We are overshadowed academically by Princeton like they are with Stanford, we are an FBS school in a major city/media market like Cal is, we have a tight group of diehard fans like they do but only seriously draw when we are winning, etc.

Amazon getting the late night package would be the final piece of the media puzzle in terms of B1G football from noon to past midnight EST.

“THE BAND IS ON THE FIELD!”

Hundreds of millions apart. Lol. They think the networks want to pay for the leftovers???

The established networks won’t, but if Amazon wants to get into the game they are going to have to overpay (just like they did for the NFL) to make up for the perceived inconvenience of putting games on streaming.

agree but i don't see them doing that. Not for those games but I am surprised they didn't go all in on BIG

Not a bad group but I'd rather Texas, Oklahoma, ND, and Florida. There will be no stability until there is 1 league afterall.
I don’t think that is true. Stories are that the ultimate goal now is two superconferences, with the media rights shared between multiple partners, just like the NFL.

Yes, Thursday/Friday night plus (or) Late night Saturday slots for streaming. Amazon is getting good ratings with TNF. I also suspect that the four Pac 12 schools would get a deal similar to ours - less money for seven years. I believe that is the length of the Big 10's new TV deals.

Can anyone say ESPN late time slot?

Cal is a Top 5 public, maybe even 1 or 2, and not overshadowed academically all that much by Stanford. Don’t see any similarities with RU and Princeton (not FBS) in the same market, as both those others are big rivals.

Yeah.. its about the rest of the nation not being in a mood to watch PAC football.. no matter how good it is... after watching football from the rest of the country that whole day.

You know what.. PAC and Big XII should play on Sundays.. in time slots directly competing with the NFL. I suspect COLLEGE football fans might choose to watch college football on Sundays.

And forget ESPN/Fox... produce and sell it themselves. ESPN will buy the product and PAC12/BIGXII can air what they don't buy and get control of their ratings and ad rates too.

Geographic oddity perhaps, especially with being located less than 20 miles apart, but technically RU and PU are physically located in two different markets/DMAs.

Did you forget the PAC12 network existed, and what a debacle it has been for the PAC12 because they didn’t choose a media partner to work with like the B1G did Fox?

If they did that they give the NFL justification to play on Saturday and that will hurt the college games

Don’t love Cal idea at all. Get Colorado in here instead

It's a weird number but if you add those schools plus Colorado, you have 21 schools and you can create divisions of 7

UCLA/USC/Cal/Stanford/UW/UO/CO and then current East and West

do not understand the obsession with Colorado or the Arizona schools

AZ or ASU because of the growing population center around Phoenix. They want to get that market in the fold.

USC doesn't want any more Pac-12 schools invited to the Big Ten. At least not until they gain serious ground with California recruits. Oregon and Washington capitalized off USC sanctions and USC isn't too fond of them because of that. Unless the Pac-12 falls apart and the Big Ten can make a low ball offer to its remaining members the next Big Ten Choice may come as a shock to everyone.
