tell the audience how she was gonna have to defend herself from all the crap she was going to get for doing so? wow. that is telling.

Did a blind pick of the top 4 players in the running.
I picked the player who was no. 1 in B1G scoring and in Top 15 of 9 of 15 categories. Pretty clear choice.
and yup, it was her.

So sad that she had to defend herself and her pick that way. Thank you Vera for being stand up and speaking the truth.

Yes I saw but I think she might have had comments directed to her regardless of who she picked since there are several worthy players as her blind listing of stats for several players showed. She did give a lot of love to Arella.
The other interesting but bad thing announced is that this was her last broadcast as part of the women's sports report. She is moving on but they don't say where. She will be around through the conference tournament.

Go RU! Beat the Badgers!

I saw that. I've always loved Vera Jones and was always happy when I saw she was going to work an RU game. Too bad she's retiring. I'll really miss her work. And, yeah, of course I agree with her pick. Arella puts the "ALL" in "baller".

If Arella is named B1G POY, would she be the first athlete from RU to get that distinction? Was there someone in Track & Field that was named. I don’t think Ashnault or Suriano were named (although a National Championship ain’t too shabby)

Just wondering if she would be our first.

She said she's doing the tourney. I think she meant the ncaa not the big. Yes, she is really a good listen.

Top 5 choices, imo, are pretty clearly:

  • Kathleen Doyle, IA (4th in scoring, 1st in assists, 9th in FG%, 10th in steals)
  • Lindsay Pulliam, NW (3rd in scoring)
  • Kaila Charles, MD (8th in scoring, 8th in rebounding, 4th in FG%)
  • Arella (1st in scoring, 10th assists, 15th rebounding)
  • Naz Hillmon, MI (5th in scoring, 3rd in rebounds, 2nd in FG%)
You can't really go wrong, though I'd maybe put Doyle in a slight lead just because she has led her team to top 3 in the B10 and top 25 nationally, despite losing a ton from the previous year. Kaila Charles may be the best player overall, but she's had a down year (for her).

I agree with your assessment.
I would love for Arella to get it, but I think where your team finishes will have some bearing.

Not me. You can't be held responsible for everything the rest of your team does. The fact that RU is where it is given the play of others is a total testament to what kind if player she is. You folks saw the OSU game, right?

And its not like Rutgers is in 10th place with 2 home games to go. We're 6th with a shot at 5th in a 14 team conference.

Asking again
Would Arella be the first RU Athlete to win a B1G Player of the Year Award? In any sport?

best I could come up with:
In 2019, Rutgers’ Reanda Richards was tabbed the Women’s Track Athlete of the Year

I actually don’t think there are others. That was why I asked about it.

Check out Sue Wicks: (but you're just asking about the B1G I believe)

Born in Center Moriches, New York, Wicks played for Rutgers University from 1984 to 1988. While at Rutgers, she was named a Kodak All-American in 1986, 1987 and 1988, and in 1988 she won the Naismith, U.S. Basketball Writers Association, Women’s Basketball News Service and Street & Smith’s National Player of the Year awards. She was Player of the Year in the Atlantic 10 Conference in 1986, 1987 and 1988, winning the Atlantic 10 Tournament MVP award in 1986 and 1988, and sharing it in 1987. She also was named to All-Regional Teams in the NCAA tournament in 1986 and 1987. She holds the Rutgers records for points scored (2,655), rebounds (1,357), scoring average (21.2 ppg), rebounding average (10.9 rpg), field goals made (1,091) and attempted (2,099), free throws made (473) and attempted (641), and blocked shots (293). The scoring and rebounding totals are records for a male or female player at Rutgers.

As I have stated mucho times over the years, Vera is one of, if not the BEST color broadcasters in WBB. I will miss her greatly as this is her last year. Thanks, Vera!

We were sitting near the BTN booth today and after the game, caught her in an emotional moment hugging Lisa Byington as this was her last regular season broadcast (and maybe last on BTN - not sure about that). I stopped by the booth to thank them both for their excellent coverage of women's basketball and told Vera she will be missed. And of course, shared my vote for Arella for POY! Vera is one of the best for sure -- loved her knowledge, enthusiasm and sense of humor. She's a professional motivational speaker and you can see why. Thanks Vera!
