Have listened to WFAN for a few minutes here-and-there numerous times over the last week. Has anyone told them that college football has started?

That reminds me ... I forget sometime last year I think, in maybe November or December, lots of big pro and college football going on ...guess what Mike Zaun led off with at 1:00? You got it! Baseball! I literally lol'd.
That's a long way of saying, that's clearly a baseball station followed by pro sports in the metropolitan area.

The 5 Boros (not the Tri-state area) are basically a baseball town and WFAN reflects it. What football they cover is mainly the Jets (ironic for the flagship station of the NY Giants). And yes, you could have both the Giants and Jets in the playoff hunt around Thanksgiving and what you'd hear is "pitchers and catchers in 8 weeks".

The tens of millions of People who grew up in the five boroughs seem to have a very deep emotional investment in the pro sports franchises, especially baseball and football. That's not going to change.

WFAN is not going to do more than the occasional segment on the college game (Gary Danielson's weekly spot on Francesa is one, but it's always SEC-heavy), not unless there comes a time where ranked teams are meeting in Piscataway on a nearly weekly basis. That's when it's going to be something, because that's when all the proximity has real value.

Spot on observation...but it would sound more like "pitch-iz and catch-iz repawt in 8 weekz."

Who cares, though. There are so many media outlets and websites covering college football. Just because Joey in Queens, Vinny in Staten Island and the buffoon hosts on that station are obsessed with da Knicks and da Yan-keez shouldn't matter a bit us.

I stopped listening to both WFAN and ESPN Radio a couple years ago. You'll learn nothing new and can find any news they cover on a number of websites. They rarely actually talk about stats, player performance or the games, but just try to stir up any controversy they can (mostly ESPN) over the most mundane nonsense or they just joke around with each other which is fine, but there's better things to listen to than what Boomer and Carton did this weekend. Plus callers are absolutely brutal to listen to...There are million podcasts out there that are significantly more interesting.

I did the same thing about 8 months ago. Got any good podcasts you recommend? I'm currently subscribed to the sold verbal, ru scout, si college football, college football matrix and nj.coms Rutgers rising from the ashes.

You can bet they will give the Notre Dinero/Texas score. Years ago, didn't they do some kind of picking against the spread for 4 or 5 games every college football weekend on Friday afternoon with Mike and the Mad Dog?

Stewart Mandel & Bruce Feldman on The Audible. It's a national college football show and they release approx 45 mins to 1 hour usually twice a week during the season.

I believe that was NFL games

Of course they don't. The only real college football program anywhere near the city plays in NJ. The Jets and Giants are NJ teams now. They talk about baseball because the Mets and the Yankees actually play in the city.

Very true. Most of the Wfan listeners and staff don't even know we are in the BIG .

I remember them doing that for CFB back in the ''06-'08 area. They used to play the fight songs of the teams they'd pick and hearing ours was always eye-opening.
Correct. In the early days they would do the 5 college picks before 5 pm with the fight songs. Then the 5 NFL picks after five. The NFL music playing in the background.

Jersey is a pro state just as NYC is a pro town. Is what it is. Get your fix elsewhere. There are plenty of venues for it.

.

Right now around 40% of NYC was born in another country. That's a reason WFAN is doing Spanish baseball games with Univision. Its also a reason WFAN doesn't care about college football

"WADO-1280AM is one of the leading Spanish language News/Talk/Sports station in the United States and we are proud to partner with WFAN and the New York Yankees," Felix Perez, Vice President and General Manager for WADO, Univision Radio New York. "As the Spanish language home of the Yankees since the mid 1990's, we know how much the Hispanic community loves baseball and we're committed to bringing them the play-by-play of one of the most beloved teams in the region."

Yanks and Mets BOTH in dogfights for Wild Card slots. NFL starts next Thursday. U.S. Open. Kinda tough for them to get to riled up about college football and, realistically, the only one there who does talk college football is Francesser and he's off this week.

They were, however, RIPPING Penn State for honoring JoePa's 50th during their updates today.

No, they did both pro and college back in the day.

Why on earth would WFAN care much about college football? Seriously, why? We have to get it through our heads that when we talk about being a presence in the New York market it is because a lot of New Jersey is in that market. Their core audience would fall asleep listening to Rutgers football talk.

Why does it matter? There are six zillion media outlets these days, many staffed by totally unqualified, barely literate boneheads who will get raves on this site if they say anything nice about Rutgers. Go find one and pretend that one matters.

Or just watch the games, chat about them here and enjoy yourself.

Gotta love Mike Francesa. He paid no attention to the caller, as he was looking at texts on his phone. He finally asks the guy what he is talking about. Upon learning it was the Bassmaster Classic fishing tournament Mike smugly says he is thrilled for the winner and hopes he can watch it himself next time around.

So fulsome towards the caller and so classic Mike Francesa. Very surprised that the call got by the screener.
