- Why is Duke playing Illinois in late February?

- How did Illinois manage to get a marquee OOC matchup vs. Duke at MSG, yet we couldn’t do anything better there than giving up a home game to play MSU? I doubt Duke would have played us there, but it would have been one of the hottest tickets this year if Flagg, Dylan and Ace were on the court together.

If these questions have been asked / answered, feel free to direct me to the thread.

It was said on the broadcast that Scheyer wanted to play a high-level intersectional game late in the season to get his team tournament ready. How the opponent was decided is another story.

Duke is leading Illinois 35-20 first half.Gillis, a former Purdue player ,is now playing for Duke.Illinois has the talent to make this a competitive game. The crowd favors Duke.

Duke wanted an opponent that they would not draw too much ….and be a very pro-Duke home crowd .

I don’t get the benefit of this game this late in the season.
Demoralizing for Illinois. Not sure they will recover.
Another B1G team selling out to the Garden to their detriment. Definition of insanity.

Duke coach Jon Scheyer said he wants to play at MSG once a year and wants to earn a quad 1 win there this season. Schedule conflicts prevented a December game so Duke and Illinois agreed to meet in February.

Wise move by Jon - unless Illinois launches a miraculous second half comeback.

Illinois is #18 in the NET rankings, easily a quad 1 win for Duke as opponent needs to be in NET top 50 on neutral court to count as quad 1. MSG is a neutral court according to the NET rankings but MSG really is Duke's Cameron North home court. Duke wins at MSG almost every season.

Maybe next season Duke and Rutgers can play at MSG. Teams haven't met in 25 years.

Duke has a 40+ year relationship with MSG, and play a game there almost every year. Duke agreed to play a game against Illinois a couple of years ago, and this is what worked schedule wise for both teams.

Illinois is getting absolutely dismantled. Their season has been in a bit of a tailspin since January.

They may end up being a bigger disappointment than us this season.

They were coming in with very high expectations - and just like Rutgers they heavily rely on two 18 year olds who are projected to go in the first round. And they have a very good coach in Underwood.

I'd have to go back and look, but it seems like Illinois generally starts off really hot and look great. Then midway through the B1G they seem to drop off quite a bit before settling in around the top 25 area.

Surprised the B1G would allow a non conference game this late in the season. That’s a no no for other sports.

Schedule conflicts…lol

They found a way for noon Rutgers hoops.

Duke used to play St.Johns towards end of year at MSG too.

Scheduling at a venue like MSG is never easy, and the Conference gets a high profile nationally televised game played at the most famous arena in the country.

Nobody has any real objection to that although time slots have been meh.

The issue again is giving up home conference games. I’d like that one point loss to Wiscy at the Garden played at the RAC.
7 point loss this year?
And shift things up and whether karma or not but Mags rips up knee at Garden.

Illinois’ season destroyed. Can’t see them recovering from this, this late in the season.
Confidence has to be shattered.

I’m talking about the Duke Illinois game. And the reason they get a Saturday evening game is that Duke brought a sponsor, Sentinal One, which paid the Garden a nice fee to plaster their name all over the court.

So if Dylan played what makes you think we would have played closer?

Would Dylan have been better than Derkack?
The fact that GUnit still blames the garden for Mag getting hurt says it all, he is not rational about the issue of garden games

We lost a lot of RAC games this year

We also had a massive crowd at the garden, a home court advantage type of crowd

It didn’t matter, RU just was not a good enough team this year, at that point in time
