Eddie needs to go

Maybe we should shut down the basketball program for a few years.

Well guess the ND HC had it right when he told Christie RU should shut down its MBB program for awhile after Rice made it look like a rogue program.

Until RU starts funding RU MBB, don't expect Eddie to be replaced this year or next.
Hopefully those who said it will take Jordan 7 years to build a constant winner will be right and progress will show in his fourth.
As of now: those who claimed 7 years is to long, might be right the way the team looks now.
Looks more like infinity before RU MBB becomes good.
I still hold hope, nothing else I can do, because I don't think Hobbs is going to make a move to improve the MBB program for a couple of years.
Stupid idea to shutdown the program-we needed to hire a better coach. Barchi panicked after he screwed-up with Rice and rushed into hiring EJ.

Disagree. I thought EJ was a good hire on few levels. But, apparently, college coaching is not a strength. Although watching him and Van Gundy install those defenses in the early 90's was just great. I don't know what happened.

Too bad you can't overhaul the ass't coaching staff in mid-season, cause apparently none of them can do anything. And it looks like EJ can't pick a staff either.

The only positive in all this is that we can't go any lower. We're at rock bottom. The rest of this year and next, for that matter, can't get any worse. That leaves time for a thorough search for a replacement, if all aspects of the program don't improve dramatically (and, unfortunately, I can't see that happening.)

I feel really bad for Sanders (particularly) as well as the kids that have committed to play here. They deserve better.

Anyone see this from Eddie's post-game as reported by Carino?

Unprompted in the postgame press conference, Rutgers coach Eddie Jordan said it’s up to the players to solve the rebounding woes. “I told them I’m not going through rebounding drills guys,” Jordan said. “That’s not in my package as a coach. Rebounding is about heart and nose for the ball and wanting to go get it. That’s just not me as a coach."

If he "isn't about rebounding" as a coach he isn't about winning as a coach. I am stunned by this.

Revealing and disturbing

But it all makes sense as to why our team doesn't seem to know how to execute any of the basics

I am livid that our team is so unprepared in so many facets of the game

Eddie's minimal college coaching experience was a big complaint from many when he was first hired. After he was named I did fully support him anyway of course, wavered last year, but started feeling good about a breakthrough when he landed Sanders and Freeman. The last straw for me is him saying today that he's not about coaching-up rebounding, that is not acceptable and Hobbs should be chewing him out for that ridiculous approach.

It's not EJ. GS turned the FB program around because he got the facilities. we can change coach again but it won't make a difference.

I don't know how you can watch a team this consistently bad for this long and not think "it's EJ".
I'm pretty sure this will be his last season here.

That quote about rebounding drills is dumbfounding & dismaying.

We were out-rebounded 53-32 & barely snared more than half the misses on the defensive end. I don't care who was out with injury, that is deplorable.

I remember there were a few who suggested shutting down the program for a few years after the Rice fiasco. In hindsight, not much difference. Program seems to have pretty much shut itself down, except we're paying a coach a lot of money to do...what, exactly?

That is the stupidest thing I have ever heard a coach say. Is that true? Any coach worth anything would have those kids doing nothing but rebounding drills after that horrible display. They would beat it in to them so they wouldn't want to go through another practice like that.

I get the distinct feeling Eddie just doesn't like coaching. He probably loves the game, but his attention to detail required for this level or really any level not rec ball, just isn't going to get it done.

Can you imagine Coach K saying something like that? The thing you do the worst we aren't going to try and get better at it because that isn't what I do as a coach. Wtf?

Will you stop with the facilities crap. Go look at our wrestling practice facilities which are probably among the worst in the country yet Coach Goodale has us at 9-1 and # 10 in the country.

the point Jordan was making is the team lacked heart...stop reading in to it.

Bash him for other reasons, but not this.

WNG makes a great point. Wrestling has limited resources and is ranked in the top ten. May not remain there. But, the coaches doing way more than expected with less resources than most programs. They had a great recruiting year and got kids that were offered by other Big Ten programs with much better facilities and years of tradition. It can be done at RU.

Agree about the lack of heart.

But, EJ certainly can do more as a coach to instill passion and fire in his team. A program like RU will never get turned around without outworking the opposition and focusing on defense and rebounding.

Please stop all of your whining. He started with nothing. Let him build some talent.

EJ should be fired for this. EJ is unprepared as coach, so his players are unprepared as well.

Eddie is gone at the end of the season. Until then, there is no doubt that things will get worse before they get even worse. So sit back and grin and bear a season which will be as enjoyable as shitting glass with nothing but salt with which to wipe your ass.

Take a moment to read this. It's just an article and some selected anonymous quotes. But there's no way when you finish reading it you won't come away concerned about whether Eddie really knows how to do this.

I would agree that he will be let go after this year if it weren't for the $2mm+ that it would cost RU. That makes it at worst 50-50 that he gets another year. But if this play keeps up -- along with the recruiting concerns -- it may become impossible not to fire him.

He's not doing that! That's the worst part. He totally whiffed in the early signing period. He's not bringing in talent so even if he left this year we're facing another long rebuild by his successor.

Hobbs should read that article and go have a conversation with Eddie about his recruiting focus. I doubt he would be let go at the end of this year although I think its pretty clear this is not going to work. Despite all the bravado that we were ready to spend big bucks on a FB coach (if the right coach was interested of course) we wound up going the more tradition Rutgers way. Therefore I find it hard to believe until proven otherwise that we would buy EJ out of the $2.5MM he would be owed if fired.

The rebounding comment is unbelievable. I coach my sons in a youth basketball league. I was looking online for drills and found a website with a ton of great drills from all levels of coaching. If the website is correct. There is a rebounding drill that Izzo uses in every single practice. It instills the mindset of really going after that ball, fighting for it, WANTING it. We have nobody that even attempts to box out right now.

This is like a football coach telling his defense that he won't work on tackling drills because they should know how to do it by now and try harder.

He may very well be the worst coach in the nation. I have kept these tickets for my boys who use to fight to get the extra ticket. After yesterday, my 9 year old says his brother can go to the rest of the games, he is busy the rest of the season.

This is beyond an embarassment at this point. No heart, no desire- crushed on the boards, beaten to every loose ball, no defensive intensity and a bring the ball up and shoot offense.

Eddie MUST GO NOW! He makes FHJ look like Coach K for goodness sake.

He can't coach or recruit- just terrible.

Wrestling is on the rise, and just imagine what they can do with continued success this year and more $$$ in their budget?

That article is nauseating.

In the Rice era, I would have recruits sitting behind me all the time in 118. Last year Jordan gave those seats to friends of the visiting team. I bitched up a storm & haven't had the same issue this year. But the point is our coach doesn't seem to understand the outreach & relationship building that recruiting requires. This isn't the NBA. Lately it's barely organized basketball.

I hate to say it but unless Rutgers loses every Big 10 game by 20 or more points or has a scandal in hoops, Eddie is likely back next year. I think this is his 3rd year in a 5 year contract where he is owed roughly $2.5 mil for the last 2 years. Yesterday was a bad loss but we may allow him to go into the B10 and if he can beat the beatable teams (ie. PSU and Nebraska) then we may give him 1 more year.

By waiting until after next season we will have more of the B10 money to use on a new coach plus the upgrades for the basketball facilities will be further along.

The replacement may be one of the Hurley's. My guess is Danny since Hobbs may know him from SHU. Both are coming off 20+ wins seasons at URI and Buffalo.

I will wait to see what happens by the end of the season. Things can change in the course of a year; think Wenzel's first year. But if things continue, then yeah, here we go again with another coaching change.

This is not an offensive line we're building.....this is basketball. Freshman and sophomores contribute significantly on lots of quality teams. This was a home game....vs. a local rival....a blow out.
This isn't Eddie's first year. We should have way more talent on this team than we do.
Eddie will be gone by the end of this season. Then we can start over....and it shouldn't take three years for the next guy to put together a 10-win team.

at this point, sadly, I'm inclined to agree with the OP. I really think you MUST give a new coach the full chance that is expected when he is hired. And its still very early. I still absolutely give him a 100% pass on the first season since he was hired in April and had no chance to really recruit

However, to be as BAD as we are--at the the level of Central F***ing Arkansas, is inexcusable. I can even take--and fully expected--to lose games this year. And we are completely out-talented right now by SHOE.

What I can't take is looking like these guys just saw a basketball for the 1st time last week.

Are you absolutely sure? Never underestimate RUMBB ability to out-suck its previous suckiest! No joke!

Sadly, it appears EJ is just here to collect a paycheck and nothing more. I've seen bad BB in my day and this is some of the worst BB I've seen in a long time. It's one thing to not have Freeman out there, but one had to indict EJ for his lack of offensive sets and especially for his matador defense. What has the man learned in all of these years? It appears to be nothing. Just like with Flood, there is no identity on what this team is. And the same DUMB things they do in one game seem to carry over to the next without ever getting corrected. That's not just because they're young. That's because the coach is not any good. Sadly, Eddie should just resign at the end of the year and leave gracefully. He is NOT a college BB coach.
