I like to stand and cheer my team. I know many get annoyed when the guy in front of them stands too much or (sometimes) even at all.
I'm not obnoxious and standing all the time but I feel bad about blocking views on the 5-10 possessions where I do stand and nobody behind me ever stands.
Therefore, what is the etiquette in this situation where I know that I like to stand more than the average person sitting in the first few rows of 100s?
Do I ask the person behind me if it's okay?
Do I tell them it's coming at beginning of game?
I'd love to hear from standers and those who hate standers.
Thanks!

Standing is always acceptable. You shouldn't have to cater to people sitting on their hands. You're the better fan and they should stand up too. The best fan bases aren't the ones where everyone sits all game. Stand up and get loud. That's where the home court advantage comes into play.

This had been argued many times over the years and never settled. For football I personally don’t mind the standing on 3rd downs and important plays But not the entire game

Basketball Just at the critical junctures which are obvious due to crowd involvement

who cares? enjoy yourself just don't be obnoxious. Cheer and pop up on big plays and gauge the crowd for end of game if tight and everyone else is standing.

I disagree. I sometimes have an elderly couple who sit behind me who do not appear capable of standing for any stretch of time. I will not stand to block their view. I consider that unacceptable.

The best solution is to have "rowdy" and "sit" friendly sections so everyone is surrounded by like minded people who either want to sit or stand. If you're too old to stand up it might be time to watch the games on TV. It's unfair to expect fans to sit all game. If you can't stand and come to a live sporting event it's a risk you're willingly taking. No one is blocking your view from a TV at home. Just like bringing kids to a game. There's a risk there are going to be drunk fans yelling screaming and swearing. You knew that going into it. Expecting no foul language at a game bc you brought your kids isn't a fair thing to expect. Neither is expecting no one in front of you to stand. If you're not willing to risk sitting behind someone who might be standing then stay home.

Maybe it should be the ones that can’t help getting drunk/swearing or can’t show respect for those around them that should stay home.

Really pushing for that home court advantage! Sitting quietly fans really fire up the team and make it a tough environment for the opposing team. #fail

What I would do in that situation is explain I like to stand now and then and offer them my seats. I've actually done that.

It’s no longer possible to cheer or make noise while sitting? Duke had an awesome environment against UNC a few weeks ago, yet Barack Obama (and the rest of the non-students) was sitting down 95% of the time.

Restricts the lung output.:cool2:

If there is a big shot or fast break play then I am all for standing up to cheer and then staying up to scream for good defense.

And then once the other team scores they sit you down. The amount of air that goes out the arena in your method is tremendous. The players feel it

I want to be with the riot squad 1 game. Just don't ask me to do that arm swing thing. I'll pass out.

The Riot Squad has some learning to do as well.
Pike needs to call them out and challenge them to be nuts ALL GAME and not just when good things are happening ... in other words, ask a generation of people who crumble at adversity to push through. Good luck.

Sorry fellas , it’s getting close to game time and nerves are building

So you do not have the ability to cheer when you are sitting?
You can only make noise if you are standing?

You should stand the whole game in the last row of section 302 on top.

Ridiculous that you think standing is always acceptable. My dad is going to be 90 in June and I took him to the first 13 games this year. Of course he should have to stand the whole game.

There is a proper time and place for everything. Team is on a run, fine time to stand and celebrate or getting back into the game on a run is good to stand. Just standing all the time shows you are either young or a moron and not really a great fan.

Best of Luck,
Groz

Had PSU fans directly behind me stood a lot and didn't give a shit

Thanks everyone! Lots of REALLY GREAT points and I agree with most on both sides. Thankfully in the first few rows there were lots standing so I was mostly right with the flow. (I maybe stood 2x for like 1 possession each when I don't believe others around me were standing).
Great game (obviously I'd change the last 5 seconds, but...) Great game, great environment. The next couple years really have some special potential!

What is the right time to leave game to go to bar? Too beat traffic? To yell at clouds?

Is it too early now at half?
Always too early at the half. I'm also against leaving until the game is out of reach, like less than 1% chance of different outcome.

Wow! If you're old, stay home an watch on TV?! Really? How old are you? Twelve? I have a 90-year old father - an RU alum. One of his great pleasures in life is attending at least one game at the RAC each year. He does not qualify for a handicap section, but there's no way he can stand during the game. He's a tough old war vet and child of the Depression. I'll let you tell him he has to stay home, so maybe he'll punch you in the mouth.

That's an elegant solution. I like it. Speaks well about your character too!

nice of you to say. hey, I'm 60 so not far behind them lol.
Actually, I have a real soft spot for the older generation. They have a grace about them that we'll likely never see again in this country.

We still have one and the world we like because of what some of them did...for all of us.

Before last night's game they held a moment of silence for 3 RU faithful who had passed away. One was Walter Leib, a 90 year old alumnus who sat in Section 104 and rarely missed a game. I'm sure no one wishes he stayed home to watch the games on TV.

this again

Look, just understand your surroundings and understand why the person in front of you might want to stand up and why the person behind you might not want you to. Feel it out from there. It doesn't guarantee anything but it's a start.
