For you older time guys

Eugene O really reminds me of a slightly taller version of Kelvin Troy. Troy got 4 ppg as a frosh, 11 as soph on the 1979 sweet 16 team, then 18 ppg as a junior and senior. I don’t expect that type of offense progression from Eugene but the total improvement from frosh to soph year is there. Similar physical prowl and scowl on both of their faces. Troy was a little better perimeter defender, Eugene is a little better on the block

The rebound dunk of Williams three really remind me of kelvin troy In alumni hall in win over St. John’s in 1979

Both had raw handles that were coachabke and improved as time went on. Both were great bulling there way to the hoop and getting the shot off despite giving inches

Can Eugene develop a credible outside shot that Troy did as a junior and senior?

Nice comparison.
Yes ... should have thought of him.

Omoruyi is much more muscular than Troy (who was wiry strong). Troy was quicker. I do not think Troy ever had much more than a 15 foot shot, and played PF, for the most part.

Troy had the 2nd most intense "game face" and was such a fierce competitor ... 2nd only to Phil Sellers. Omoruyi? Very intense, we shall see if it rivals Troy and Sellers in terms of intensity.

Prowl and scowl- good comparison Shack. Eugene O has a LOT
of similarities to Kelvin Troy.

Eugene has said he models his game (definitely NOT his behavior) after Draymond Green. With the exception of no real outside shot, I can see it otherwise.

Kelvin had his hands full guarding this guy...

Troy did a great job on Bird and I was there to watch. Anderson could never have guarded Bird. We were the last team to beat Indiana State before they lost in the Championship game the following year. Troy was one of the best defenders we have ever had on the banks.
I love the comparison . Eugene is much longer but Troy had much better jumping ability. Troy really worked at his game and developed into a very good 15' and in jump shooter. If Eugene can develop his shooting, he can become a great player here.

I was at that game also. I could have sworn Anderson covered Bird a lot, with Troy defending Bird in spots.

Regardless, neither did a "great" job on Bird: Bird scored 33 of Indiana's 56 (or was it 57) points. On the other hand, Tom Young had a deliberate strategy of covering Bird 1 on 1, without help, and shutting down every other Indiana St. player ... which is exactly what happened.

Eugene will have to add the 15 foot perimeter shot to his game. He will need to take it without hesitation and make it at a high rate. If not, his dribble penetration will not be nearly as effective as it has been.

You are right – – Anderson covered Bird for most of the game. I don’t know what some of these people think they remember. To this day, Anderson will tell you that Bird scored a “quiet“ 33 points. And also, Anderson was an outstanding defensive player his whole career. If you don’t know that, you weren’t paying much attention back then.

Was at the game - worked as an usher in the corner - witnessed a punch by Bird on some heckler - Bird cracked the guy and smashed his glasses - blood and glass all over the floor by the media room.

BTW - quite a compliment to Eugene - Kelvin was one of our great ones.

I remember seeing Kelvin play at Brookdale CC in the Shore Conference Championship game for Lakewood. He hit the 2 winning FT's to win the game.

If I recall correctly, the guy was actually holding his girlfriend’s hand when Bird hit him. Quite the cheap shot.

As some one stated we were the last team to beat Bird and Indiana State before their undefeated run the following season.

If only we could have beaten the Johnnies down in Greensboro we might have had a shot at them again and another final four.

IIRC..Troy got some National attention for defense? Sports Illustrated?
Got a lot of recognition for his defense in his career, which he deserved. But the year they played Indiana State he was only a freshman playing 10 to 12 minutes a game.

yeah, didn't mean that particular year....I'm sure it was his Sr. yr.

OK, memory still intact...

A FORMER American basketball hero is offering kids in Donabate the chance to improve their skills and learn more about the philosophy of the game.

Kelvin Troy, who played with Milwaukee and was listed as one of the top five defensive basketball players in America by Sports Illustrated, has come to impart his in-depth knowledge of the game and coaching wisdom to Donabate kids.

Kelvin has been in Ireland for almost 20 years and he has coached many teams in his time. Although he has seen a decline in Irish basketball since 1992, he still loves the game and wants to teach children how to play.

Never saw Troy play but to more recent players; he has some of Dane Miller in him but he's much stronger. I know he worked on his jumper over the summer but that hasn't really translated much as of yet. I'm loving his post up game and work on the offensive glass. He's only a sophomore so I think he's going to get much better.

Whether they are chasing the ball in the backcourt or rejecting it in the middle, all outstanding defenders are motivated by pride and driven by determination. "If I get scored on, it bothers me," says Rutgers Guard Kelvin Troy, a 6'5" junior whose ebullience is such that an opponent's field goal may be the only thing that gets his goat.

Troy was no guard. He played power forward for RU. He could defend guards, but he was a PF.

To another poster: You are correct on Abdel Anderson. He was a terrific defender, RU's go-to defender, actually, his last 2 or 3 seasons. one of RU's most under rated stars, mainly because as a frosh RU had Sellers and Dabney as Seniors, as a Soph Jordan, Copeland and Bailey were teammates, as a Junior, Bailey was the star of stars. Plus, I think Copeland might still have been on that team. As a Senior, he was finally the #2 guy, behind Bailey.
