Every Simon throw against Temple

I'm unable see the games but all those 2nd and 3rd downs with long yards suggests bad 1st down rushing plays setting up obvious pass plays that are easy to defend. Maybe rushing on 1st down 80% of the time isn’t working. Also, no throws under the coverage, screen passes, etc just long passes to guys who aren't often open. Looks like an NFL style offense from 1995. And there's really no way to get our receivers open against Temple?

Arm strength and accuracy doesn't seem to be that much better than Vedral's...

Can't believe I'm saying this, but a healthy Vedral should start with Wimsatt getting a few series. Simon had a great opportunity against Temple but didn't really impress.
I think his ball has a bit more “zip” to it than NV’s. I think you’re forgetting what kind of ducks NV throws.

Gavin truly does need to be the guy, but I just don’t think he’s there yet.

In all honestly, this season should have been all about Gavin learning and getting as much playing time as possible.

Iowa has the NCAA’s 4th ranked defense.

As usual.

Did you check to see what Rutgers' defense is ranked?
It's impressive too, but we don't want to tell that part of the story.

The passing attack looked bad because we could not run the ball well.

I don't think Simon turned the ball over so he did the job he was asked to do. I think he will be the main QB for the rest of the season.
I am ok with him as long as he does not make any mistakes. He will not put up big numbers but will keep us in games with the PTO (Prevent Turn Over) offense. What we saw against Temple is our offense the rest of the way, even if Vedral is back.

Rutgers wants to be a defensive team with a running game. We have fewer passing yards than Army. And it is working so why change it.

The problem is not this QB or that one. The problem is this offensive philosophy. If you like Big Ten-style offense from 50 years ago, you've come to the right place.

So - while just about every one of those traditional programs has moved away from that kind of offense (how many yards did CJ Stroud throw last week?), we're still stuck in yester-year. If we were really, REALLY good at running the ball 75% of the time (and, throwing when needed .. 15-20 attempts/game), then sure. Why not? It's boring but we'd be good at something.

I could see us, instead, as more of a Minnesota-type of offense. Their QB wasn't a 5-star recruit, last I checked, yet he seems to be doing rather well and, at the same time, their RB runs 200 yards/game. Yet - year after year, there isn't a decent QB on our roster nor a coaching staff that knows what to do with the ones we have (other than treat them with kid gloves).

**

One more thing: I hated the Wagner gameplan. Here's a great opportunity to give every QB a chance to work on their passing game. Instead, let's run 2-3 play/drives and cap it off with a 40-50 yard pass play. THAT WILL NEVER BE SUCCESSFUL AGAINST B1G COMPETITION. Instead, why not work on short and mid-level pass plays? Work the middle of the field. That could give QBs and receivers alike more confidence when they have to do that later in the season.

Those clips of Simon’s throws were telling. Inaccurate outside the hashes. Not a gun throwing plus 20+ yds but stronger than Vedral. Accurate enough on quick hit throws in the flats. No trust of his throws over the middle since none were called. No seven step throws. Just three step throws for the most part. Not much movement in the pocket waiting for wr to get open. One thing that surprised was the lack of burst to try to get first downs. Thought he was faster. I think Vedral is just as fast and has quicker feet.

I was in the camp of let Simon start since he’s not throwing ints and work Gavin in on some series. Now I say Gavin has superior abilities than Simon in every important qb category than Simon and we are not scaring quality defenses with Simon at the helm.

Not saying Simon can’t start but Gavin needs to be given entires series because his arm strength and speed can help the RU offense like now.

GO RU

For those that were not at the game here is every throw that Simon threw. IT was not as bad as I thought, there was 1 pass on the right side where the ball hits Cruickshank in the chest but he does not adjust and catch it.

Thanks for posting. You are right when watching the replay he was not bad but not great either. There were at least 4 sidelines passes where Temple mauled our WR’s that were not called. That’s fine they let them play and when refs allow the D to play you get 16-14. He had a Handful of not good passes too and one where the WR slipped so it looked bad but was on target.

The real issue was not all on Simon but our lack of run game. We were a little stubborn trying to get it untracked which put us behind the chains all game long. I give Temple credit for their run D and also the screens to Cruickshank. They showed speed and toughness near the LOS. Their back end D could have resulted in a lot of penalties and a lot more points for us.

I felt he had an off day at Temple but still think he should be the one going forward. The play calling is predictable, leading to third and longs, and I think he has been instructed on the outside balls to put it where defenders can't get it, leading to many going too far out of bounds. He hasn't fumbled or been intercepted and his qb rating is 141 so I would stay the course with him for now.

Honestly we don’t create much confusion with our receivers which doesn’t help.

I feel like they just run in one direction and don’t make defensive backs communicate.

I'd bench Wimsatt. Highly rated but has shown a lot more bad then good. Some of you got all excited over the long throw...in practice ... no pressure. Of course they never show all the misses. Is he just a running QB? We already have one of those.

Alright, looking at this one play at a time.

1st - throws to Langan. His man makes the easy read and comes up to tackle Langan well short of the first down. If Simon went to Jones across the middle, he may have had a better chance at the first down.

2nd - Long's man comes on the corner blitz and Simon is looking right at him as the play develops, yet decides to throw long on the right side. If he checks off to Long, again, a better chance of getting the 1st down. Long could've sat down on the sticks and it's an easy first down.

3rd - I like the decision to run with it rather than force a pass into trouble, but he may have had an opportunity to get Monangai on the out pattern if he has the arm strength to get it out there before the defender could jump the route. This may have been a case of him ensuring he didn't turn it over, as that could've resulted in a pick six if the route was jumped.

4th - He locked onto Ryan and they hooked up to convert the 1st down. Slant play - see, they aren't totally out of the playbook.

5th - Possible disconnect between Simon and Ryan. Looked like Simon threw it where he expected Ryan to stop. We cannot know if either messed up there. However, Simon had no more time to wait as he was decked on the follow-through and he put it where it could not be picked, so I'm going to say he made a good decision there.

6th - Three receivers in the route, all well covered. I don't think any QB was going to complete the pass at that point. He didn't force it into trouble, leaving us with the FG attempt.

7th - Deep ball to Cruickshank, possible pass interference that was not called. I think Langan on the right side hash/skinny post may have been the better option.

8th - Cruickshank slipped coming out of his break. Not likely a 1st down on 3rd and 17, but it looks like a good throw.

9th - Deep bal lto Cruickshank on the left side drew the flag for PI. Borderline call but we'll take it!

10th - Not a pass, Simon keeps it on the RPO and picks up six on 1st down. Good decision.

11th - We only had two WR in the route and neither was open, so Simon put the ball out of bounds. Smart decision.

12th - Looks like a nice grab by Long on a quick out that was a little off target.

13th - Hits a wide-open Jones in a hole in the zone for a first down. Very nice play.

14th - Quick screen to Cruickshank, complete for a short gain. Temple played it well.

15th - Lots of pressure, Simon stepped up and away from the rush and made the easy dump to Cruickshank to get close to the 1st down. If he could've kept his eyes downfield, Ryan was open for a likely TD but that may be a play that is hard to make without more experience.

16th - Another quick hitter to Cruickshank, picks up the 1st down and a nice tackle saved Temple some extra yardage.

17th - Quick dump to Salaam, who gets four or five yards. Simon was heavily pressured by a blitzing defender and made a good decision here.

18th - The sack. Poor pass protection. Cruickshank got in the way of the OL that was trying to slide over and pick up the man who ended up getting the sack. The timing at the start of that play just looked off in this replay, and the play clock shows zero when the replay starts. If Cruickshank clears the backfield before the snap, maybe the OL (Direnzo?) could make the block and save the play. There was holding called on a different OL anyway. You can't really see the receivers enough in the video to judge what opportunity was there to get rid of the ball and avoid the sack.

I'd say his decision making improved as the game went on.

Good summary. A few plays with 2 man routes against 6 DBs or 3 man routes against 7 DBs had no chance of success and he made the correct decision throwing the ball away. Terrible play design.

For play # 1, I wonder what the play design was there. Was the first read supposed to be Jones or Langan?

Play #5- The OL #51 needs to do a better job and give the QB a clean pocket so he can step into the throw.

Most of these throws were on 3rd downs because they ran the ball almost every first down. Play calling needs to get better.

Love when fans think passes that are wisely thrown away are bad passes. I have fans who sit near me who whine about that all of the time. You don’t get many fans like that at Giants or Jets games.

Good analysis Trumpet. I saw those same things but did not focus as much on the off receivers as much as the passes. Only a few really off target and a few he threw away. The one you mentioned Ryan being open I saw too but running to his left that may have been a tough pass. He made the safe choices which we all know is what HC1 wants. He and / or Gavin will get longer leashes as they grow.

I also noticed that Temple was mixing up their D and guessing correctly. We did run some 4 man crossing routes and Temple was in zone so nobody was open. I think I saw that twice in the above replay.

Only 2 first down passes all game. A better mix will help the pass game as well as the run game. This is on Gleason.
