Facilities plan to be announced in June

+1 on all the questions raised by der. This may very well be an example of the Jersey Shuffle where everyone makes vague statements and looks to take credit for a success while being able to point the finger at others if the action fails. Something tells me that OSU and Michigan don't do it this way.

Can't stop laughing at those praising Lesniak. They clearly know nothing about the guy. He makes Sweeney look like a fresh faced choir boy to those that know him.

Good timing by Lesniak. Get credit for doing nothing but whining.
Well, obviously Lesniak didn't cause creation of a RAC improvement plan, as this was included in the Physical Master Plan announced in early February, before Lesniak's letter.

But Lesniak can get credit for helping to create a political atmosphere in which it is acceptable for Rutgers to secure funding for athletic capital improvements, and he may have also encouraged some donors to come forward.
Has RU actual secured non-donor funding for athletic improvements? Is the state pitching in? Are we expanding the subsidy? Are we taking out bonds?

Barchi says that they are rolling out the plans on a schedule. Is he lying (I mean it wouldn't be surprising, he's as much of a politician as Lesniak), and they just slapdash threw this plan together in the last month?

We pretty much know the state will not kick in any money. We also know that Rutgers won't expand the subsidy. So funding will have to come from the Athletic Department or some creative funding by Rutgers (which would be accounted for separately from the subsidy).

When the plan is announced this summer, we'll see if Lesniak's "whining" had any impact. If there is strong political opposition (beyond the normal noise that can be expected from the anti-Rutgers or anti-Athletics factions), then Lezniak did not have any impact. But if there is political support to getting this done, and getting it done quickly, then you could give Lezniak credit.

Lesniak has done more than that. Hasn't he consistently sided with Rutgers every time the state tries to take Rutgers's money or property or government?

Also, he has helped create an atmosphere where Rutgers spending a large sum of money on athletics, even if partly by a loan, is acceptable.

Rutgers needs more state legislators like Lesniak.
Pretty sure Lesniak co-sponsored the last power grab with Sweeney.

Soccer is much better when played on grass. However, the fact that Yurcak was a laxer and the team has been squeezed out of the facility is a problem. It should have field turf on it and soccer can either fund another facility or deal with the turf. Doesn't look like it is happening though.

Look for DONORS and SPONSORS to get these projects done with the school perhaps taking a loan to make up the difference.

Anyone who thinks that the state is going to fund any of this stuff has never been to New Jersey.

No not really - because as long as RU isn't expanding the subsidy or using state money, I wouldn't have expected there to be a big political outrage. There wasn't when Tim P announced his plans - because that was mostly if not entirely donor funded.

Now if RU announces that its borrowing alot of money to get this done at once, and there is political support, THEN you can say Lesniak had a role. Otherwise, I think he either just lucked into good timing, or he calculated good timing.

Or maybe somebody whispered in his ear....

Lesniak opposed Sweeney's plan. See link:

As state lawmakers prepare to vote on a plan to add four members to the Rutgers Board of Governors, Sen. Ray Lesniak (D-20) has opposed the plan proposed by Sen. Steve Sweeney. Lesniak told NJTV News[/I] anchor Michael Hill that he believes there is a better reform for governance at Rutgers University.
"I think there's a better way to reform governance at Rutgers without taking away its independence, which has served it well for over 250 years," said Lesniak.
