***Five RU players dismissed from team***

My point is this is a forum for Rutgers football. Members of ScarletNation have just emerged from, what, a week of breaking news on this "scandal" ? And today just five minutes before kickoff, Deren pulls a SL move. Is his "news" really "news" to us? Didn't we know this was coming? Again, it's the timing and the outlet that make this schmucky.

Normally, we're in agreement on a lot of things, but I'm baffled by your criticism here. Bobby is a reporter for this site and my guess is he posted the news as soon as he got it, which is what he's supposed to do. How does doing his job make it a "SL move?"

And yes, this news is really news - I honestly thought the guys involved in the fight would simply be suspended pending the outcome of the investigation, since it didn't sound that "serious" except for the guy who broke the guy's jaw, i.e., I though we'd see that guy dismissed and the others suspended. Of course, maybe this was just the last straw for at least Barnwell and Peele, who had screwed up a few times (so I could see them being dismissed for that; Boggs was a no-brainer).

I guess your guilty until proven innocent at Rutgers. Sucks to be the guy in the wrong place at the wrong time. O well bye bye fellas good luck in life hope you can straighten it out.
Dismissing Boggs (charged with armed robbery/home invasion), Peele (second arrest after last fall), and Barnwell (continuing academic ineligibility) was a no-brainer. Those guys don't belong anywhere near the RU football program. The others? I'll leave it to the details of the fight in question, which I'm sure were considered before making the decision to dismiss them rather than continued suspension pending trials/pleas..

As has been mentioned, there is video of the encounter now in the hands of law enforcement.

Pursuant to the ongoing investigation, on August 28th law enforcement executed search warrants against the cell phones of several unnamed players. Those phones were seized and examined.

At least one of the phones revealed a video recording of the incident in question.

Putting aside for a moment the fact that jurisprudence does not apply with respect to membership on a football team, the video evidence was sufficient to determine that Barnwell & Co. had in fact participated in a very ugly unprovoked assault against a group of fellow students.

Their immediate dismissal from the team and the school is a purely rational move.

And parenthetically - it should go without saying that the very special kind of stupid that it takes to video record the commission of a felony with a cell phone is the very special kind of stupid that has no business representing Rutgers in any capacity.

Thanks - been quite busy, so not on top of the details of the story. Is there a decent link that has these details

Again, it is the timing that rubbed me the wrong way, numbers, in the wake of the week-long RU and program bashing by local media. I realize it is "news," but it was news we knew was coming. To have it "break" as a ***FLASH*** on the board by a ScarletNation editor just prior to the kickoff of the season opener made it all the more schmucky, in my view. It was very SL-like. And I'd like to think of ScarletNation as being above that, as it represents a key resource for a loyal following of RU fans and alumni.

Meh, I disagree - I want my news as soon as generally possible, especially when it's breaking news (which has hopefully been vetted, not twitter crap), so the timing doesn't matter to me.

Pinehurst -- the guys here posted the news at the same time it came out from every other outlet. And I'm pretty sure that was by design by Rutgers, not by the mods here.

if one of the players has video of the altercation on his phone that means he was filming it and not involved

if one of the players has video of the altercation on his phone that means he was filming it and not involved

The story does not in any way suggest that the phone in question belonged to one of those arrested.

And for the record, you'd be wrong anyway. You don't have to be physically involved in the altercation to stand charges in the incident.

if one of the players has video of the altercation on his phone that means he was filming it and not involved

why? don't understand. If he was there and filming it, I would think he was intimately involved - a major part of the assault.

Actually, it only means his phone may have been used to record the event. Someone else could have recorded it "live" using his phone. Or was the video file sent to his phone by another?

I would expect Mr Deren to post stuff as soon as he gets it...... No such thing as timing..... Sorry

Rutgers decides when to release this type of information. They chose a great time. They are getting better at the media game.

when cops beat up people and it is filmed are assault charges pressed against the person filming it?

from a conduct detrimental to the team stand point, being there and filming it is a part of it...but as far as as having assault charges pressed for filming, cmon...we dont know what happened and im not sticking up for it..but if he was filming it and didnt touch anyone you cant get be charged with assault

You don't know what "assault" means.

If, hypothetically, there were 6 players present, the group of 6 approached 4 other students, words were exchanged, an altercation starts and one player starts taking a video - and if that one player taking the video was in any way a participant in the verbal exchange leading up to the physical battery - then that player will be charged with assault.

Additionally, the five players are charged with aggravated assault, riot, and conspiracy to commit riot.

assault - a physical attack on someone....
That's not was assault is in the legal sense of the word.

  1. In common law, assault is the act of creating apprehension of an imminent harmful or offensive contact with a person. An assault is carried out by a threat of bodily harm coupled with an apparent, present ability to cause the harm.

We lost some real talented football players today that all had a few years left of eligibility.
This stings & will have a impact on the season.

But, hope its a reminder to the rest of the team to keep their side of the street clean every day.

I am honestly shocked of their actions, especially Stephenson and Barnwell who I've met previously.

Boggs had lots of potential and he flushed it down the toilet.

The common law definition of assault would not be hitting someone. In some states like NY it would be.

That said this should take us closer to the end of this whole fiasco.

Why is everyone forgetting that we still feel the effects of Tyler Clementi U? "Bullying" is not going to be tolerated here. If one of the players verbally assaulted the victim he is going to be toast. After Tyler Clementi and Mike Rice, there is no margin for error here. Flood did the safe thing for the University.

ok so there is verbal assault and assault operations and battery.....however the players werent charged with battery...they were charged with aggravated assault which is causing bodily harm.....if one of the players was filming it on his phone should he be charged with aggravated assault?

Consider all possible definitions of the word "cause".
