Flood suspended. 3 games

Been away all afternoon and wow, I'm amazed he wasn't fired. How friggin' stupid do you have to be to willfully circumvent clearly laid out university rules on contact with profs you had just been reminded about (especially in defense of a kid who clearly wasn't going to make it)? That, alone, is enough to get him fired for cause, IMO.

Hopefully, this is just step one in getting rid of Flood for cause, so we save some $$ to apply to Schiano's contract. I say that somewhat tongue in cheek, since I have no idea if Julie wants Greg or if Greg wants back in, but as per my other thread on that, that's what I'd like to see.

Why is he trying to edit his players papers? I don't care if they ruled that it was 'ok'. What the hell is Flood doing? I used to support him but not anymore. He needs to go.
if it's ok for him to do it, what's your beef with him doing it then?

If he got involved with writing a kids paper, whatever you want to call it, editing, revising, editorial suggestions, he should he fired. It is clear he doesn't know the lines. he was also told not to contact a professor and he did anyway. This is not the guy you want to be leading our football program.
you really want to stick with your statement here " if he got involved with writing...he should be fired?

the question I ask, is if this was Flood's only current problem, and none of the off field mayhem was going on, would this have been swept under the rug, would he have received a lesser penalty or would have still received the three games?

Comparable in my mind in a way that Goddell handled the penalty portion of delategate. He overpunished Brady, because he was under so much scrutiny for going soft on previous crimes.

Did the negative noise around the program increase his penalty?

For those arguing that this is overblown because he acted within normal school academic assistance, in my opinion you are missing the point. If he was helping a kid in good academic standing, that would be one thing. However on this, he was clearly trying to help a kid who was not academically eligible become academically eligible so that he could play on the team. Huge difference.
what do you think the academic support staff is for?

Read all that's released then decide. Flood went out of his way to cover up his contact with temp prof. Trying to help a dumb ass criminal who should have not been at Rutgers in the first place. Hope Kyle has saved his $$$. Next year he can go back to teaching math and HS football and live a long happy life.

if it's ok for him to do it, why can't he do it?
Editing a paper for grammar/punctuation may be legal and okay with policy, but it's not okay with me. The head coach of the Rutgers University B1G football team should have no less than a million more pressing things to do.

It's akin to the CEO of a Fortune 500 firm answering phones in the lobby reception area, and SWAT responding to a routine domestic dispute.

It seems pretty clear the reason Flood was editing this paper was because he went behind the back of the Academic Support staff to get Barnwell this extra chance. And the academic support staff wanted nothing to do with it.

Do we have a sense as to whether this is now a settled matter or whether it is a precursor to further actions?

It will be very difficult for flood to recover from this. I hope that this isn't Barchi's way of trying to keep costs low until we start getting bigger checks from the conference. In the long run, firing him now is probably better than knee capping him and letting the program flounder for a few years.

He edited for spelling etc, which was acceptable..... Dud you read the full report.... It says it was ok on two separate
Sections
Exactly. The total lack of reading comprehension by many, perhaps even most, of the people in this thread is pretty sadly ironic considering the subject revolves around academics.

if it's ok for him to do it, why can't he do it?

This entire board knew for the whole summer that barnwell need to do well to become eligible. My point is that we have a support system in place with tutors and helpers for the players. There should not be the need for a coach to be trying to assist on a paper after the final grades are done. Assistance and editing should have been done all through the semester.

Well I'm sure he will remember to clear it with you next time....

I think that the lesson to be learned from this whole affair is: "You really don't know what... you don't know"

If you're just a fan of Rutgers football, you probably feel pretty put out right now.

But if you went to school there and graduated and value the academic integrity the Univeristy touts, then you should feel pretty good about the way Rutgers handled this. What Flood did is very serious and casts the football program in a terrible light. Do you enjoy touting those top-ten APR standings and graduation rates? Because if it looks like the head football coach has an influence over players' grades, those mean nothing at all.

The fact that Rutgers has this policy in place is good. It shows they value the right of instructors to conduct classes and evaluate students free of interference. Would this kind of penalty occur elsewhere? Not everywhere; not at UNC, which surrendered all claims to academic integrity once no real punishment was issues there. But Rutgers policed itself, took the charge seriously, and suspended a highly visible employee who was clearly, obviously wrong. You should be proud of the response, which showed a lot of integrity. I'm impressed.

Well said, SHUSource. I wish the national media would see it this way, but I guess that perspective is not sensational enough for them.

I've always wanted Flood to succeed and have wanted to reserve judgement until more facts came out. Well, they're out, and I don't like that it has to go down this way, but... it does. If Rutgers is to be take seriously as an institution of higher learning, the message had to be sent. Whether I continue to be okay with this will depend on how RU moves forward if they eventually get rid of Flood.
