The SL has a new podcast called Rising From the Ashes about RU Football. During the first episode it talked about how involved Ash is with everything related to the program. Here is a part you might like, they mentioned he has moved the location of the band in the stands. Didn't mention to where, but good news of it is out of the prime seats in the student section.

Excellent. No need for 180 people to take up 400+ seats. Hopefully Ash has asked band leadership not to flat-out lie about their #'s this year as well. The future of Rutgers Football - ALL aspects - looks oh-so-bright my friends!

BTW - talked about this last year, and many agreed, hopefully Ash chose a spot that typically has empty seats, to fill with the band, like one of the corners of the student section. 132 or 143, IIRC, would be perfect. Also puts the band up a little higher which should help out with the sound!

I hope the university and band will have some kind of recruiting session with all the high school band members at the game, even if it is just some type of paper handout and "we hope to see you on campus again soon."

Not sure how I feel about this. Not like the students care about being squeezed in and we had plenty of room.

This is the last season of the current band director correct?
That was my understanding as well. Any chance we can land the Norfolk State band director?
Wouldn't want him.

Somewhere I put together a list of qualifications for the position, have to see if I can dig it up. In the meantime, I'd want someone with Big 10 experience (GA or assistant level), who has been a college band director already, so there's a body of work to look at, who's able to relate to the kids while keeping them at arm's length, who can write music and drills, who will do what's in the best interest of the band and not just the whim of some administrator, etc.

And I hope that the Athletic Department funds the position at a competitive level within the Big 10. In the late 80's and early 90's, we couldn't retain the talented directors we brought in because the position paid poorly. I have no idea whether the salary has been brought up to market level or not at this point, but it should be.

Should we hope/want to go "military" style?

I'm not sure what you mean by that. I would like to see us go "Big 10" style and get away from the drum corp style.

I always thought they were all known as "military" style." Maybe I'm wrong, lol, however YES that's what I want (and "we" should want)! Thanks bud!

If by military, you are referring to being a high stepping marching style band, yes, by all means, please lets return to that style. It's much more exciting than the current style.

It would be great to recruit an associate band director from TBDBITL (i.e., OSU). That is a band worth emulating! I wish Ohio State had brought its band last season.

As for where the band will be seated, they were fine where they were, aside from being seated in every other row. And for those games when the band was "miked" (which for some strange reason was not all the time) the sound was fine. It's when they're on the field that they difficult to hear. As for occupying empty seats, last season the student section had most of our empty seats for most games, especially at kickoff time, so I'm not sure it's a good move to change their location. And their presence in the student section is essential for coordinating the cheering of the students who are there.

I understand your point, but on the occasions we played them they brought their band and were very entertaining.

Understand that I'm not knocking their director at all - he has to be very creative and very talented to lead a band like that. But the schools and their respective environments are very dissimilar: I think a band directory from there would struggle at Rutgers, while a band director from a Big 10 school would struggle at Norfolk State.

FYI - per datauniverse Tim Smith makes $86k per year; John Madden our former director in the late 80s who is director of bands at Michigan State makes $125k per year. That being said John Madden is much more qualified as far as an advanced degree and his background. Tim Smith is listed a an instructor/lecturer for actual title and not as a professor which likely plays into his salary. I do hope that for the right hire Rutgers will pay competitively relative to the other Big 10 schools.

Okay, I know Madden was making a helluva lot less than 86K back when he was band director in the late 80's. Also, back then the position was considered staff instead of academic.

The first fan advisory board meeting of 2016, this was something myself and a few others brought up (personally, I wanted them moved). They told us at the last meeting in early August that the band would be moved. I believe they said it'll be one section over, so one would assume that means section 139.

Main reasons given for the move are that it looks terrible on television when the middle of the student section is empty in the 2nd quarter because the band is moving down to the field for halftime, and that the overall student section will be able to have a better environment by actually having more non-band students in the middle of that overall section.

The band should be where the cannon currently is on temp risers like they were when the stadium was first expanded. Thus taking up no sellable seats. The cannon should be in the other corner where the stump use to be, pointed back at the visiting team sideline adding to the effect everytime we score.

Years ago the band used to be in the equivalent of 109/108. At least it was easier to follow the game then.

No thanks keep the cannon, and it's noise, in front of visiting fans instead of me!

They are a great band, one of the best. But the past leadership had a "culture" problem . A Title 9 investigation is kind of a big deal.

After wading through scandal, Ohio State's ‘Best Damn Band in the Land’ takes show across pond
More recently they named the interim mentioned in this item to the permanent post. If we brought in anyone associated with the previous regime it would likely raise some eyebrows here.
Though it could be worse, if we were to hire someone from Florida A&M or Stanford.

I agree with the above comments that we should be looking for someone you spent significant time at a B10 program and has since been the leader at a second tier conference looking to step up as number one in the big time.
