As a member of the Rutgers football staff in 2011 and 2012, Trevor Powers wore a special patch one Saturday each season.

The patch was part of Coach to Cure MD, a nationwide partnership between college football coaches and a nonprofit dedicated to fighting Duchenne muscular dystrophy.

At the time, Powers didn’t realize just how much that patch meant. Now he does.

His 22-month-old son Trent was born with Duchenne, a progressive loss of strength because of the absence of the muscle-building protein dystrophin. Eventually the weakness leads to paralysis, and fatal heart and lung problems. Life expectancy is in the 20s.

Thank you for sharing the story Knight Shift. As mentioned in the Carino article, Trevor Powers previously coached at Rutgers and Rutgers Football has been a big supporter Coach to Cure MD. The Powers family are wonderful people, and Trent is one of the coolest toddlers you could ever meet.

Coach to Cure makes it easy to contribute. On Saturday, text the word CURE to 90999 and a $5 donation will be made to Parent Project Muscular Dystrophy. Please help by supporting and spreading the word.
