For the love of God, please not Golden

If they're seriously looking at Golden then I think it's just too much focus on Jersey ties and not enough on coaching acumen. If you're so desperate for that I'd like Elko or Hafley better but then they don't have the HC experience which is why I guess a Golden makes the list. Golden is a CEO coach and he did have Rhule/Day on staff but he also had Mark D and was too attached to him so big negative to me. Does he still have good contacts in college or what not? Don't know.

I've always said it's a bonus if you can get the local ties but not mandatory. How is it Rhule can go to Baylor with no roots at all and be successful or Longo to to Texas/Miss/NC or Elko to the Midwest/NC/Texas or Hafley to the Midwest...it's only one way traffic lol? I mean come on. If you've got it you've got it and if you don't you don't IMO it doesn't matter where you're from and there are many example of coaches coaching in places not of their origin doing just fine.

I think it would be a smart negotiating tactic by Rutgers to start reaching out to alternatives if they are struggling to meet Greg's demands. Maybe this will bring the matter to closure one way or another more quickly. There is no reason this should have taken so long with an out of work coach if both sides wanted to get this done.

The main advantage I saw with GS over other just as qualified candidates, was to get engaged during the season so that a better roster could be built for next year. I don't mean coaching, just being given a staff position that would allow him to openly recruit. Given that time that has elapsed that advantage has nearly evaporated.

Let's face it, how the Ash firing and "search" has been handled thus far is viewed as an absolute joke particularly from outsiders looking in. Few get the total fixation on GS in this process and the time this is taking given the approach.

It’s Schiano , everyone relax. Golden was just a bad rumor started by a negatoid.
Backer ,
You seem to have good connections usually . How can you be so sure . ? How come there are rumors everywhere that this may be going south?

Sorry, but what I say is correct and when only 4500 "actual "fans contributed to our biggest fund raiser effort (EVER) , I know the BOG took notice --you forget 25 million came from the state for "parking" and most from big organizations and big givers , only a relatively small
amount from what I call "actual" fans--the BOG can do math -if you think the Board thinks it won't be difficult to raise another $100-125 mill from the same sources you are dreaming--bond issues and loans like those that were used to build the stadium are politically nearly impossible in NJ and the $ from the BIG you talk about is already earmarked to balance the books--yes our fan base doesn't do our job like other BIG schools, denying that is counter productive and the BOG has a stewardship that you won't recognize
I've mentioned before that depending on how large the ask is this time...it seems quite the mountain. 100M is unprecedented for us but that was for multiple sports if this is anywhere in the vicinity of that and only for one sport and so soon on the back of that last fundraiser....just seems like a really tall order. I'd be skeptical of that amount being raised again so soon with majority private funds and not as much state help or debt issuance and in that environment kinda makes me wonder if it does happen why a Thanksgiving week "take out the trash" type moment might happen with the BOG vote if they do approve it. I hope they don't do that...if you do it do it in the light of day and defend it not in the "cover of dark" so to speak.

My fear with Al Golden is that we would not be getting the Temple Al Golden, but the Miami version. I think Al's time has passed. If Al had come from Temple to Rutgers instead of Miami I think he would have been successful, but I don't see an Al Golden removed from college football for many years doing much here now. The fact that after Diaz abruptly quit on Temple they didn't even consider Golden from what I have read should tell you all you need to know.
Be clear on this: Golden is beloved at Temple. They think the world of him. Ironically, the strongest sentiment against his return was a distaste to go back to the same well again, a general understanding that as good as it was, “the second time around” in the coaching world usually yields more disappointment than anything else. I also don’t know that Golden himself was interested in a return.

that job when he was there and the Temple job now are two different worlds. They have excellent facilities now — not Big Ten excellent, but they are an asset. When Al was there, neighborhood kids used to throw rocks at the team as they walked down the street to the practice field. And still, he built it up. He recruited well at Miami, too, but when he got there, the kids who were already there recognized him as not at all the type of coach is typically at Miami. They hated him and his discipline and rigor; that’s not why they weren’t there. He brought his old-school, northeast ethos of modesty, discipline, and toughness to a program where it’s alien. That’s why he failed.

As a Temple fan, I certainly don’t fear a Schiano-at-Rutgers scenario any more than I would a Golden-at-Rutgers scenario to the extent that it would jam up Temple’s recruiting efforts. I’m sure he’s not really a factor in this search, but that’s because Rutgers seems intent to ultimately outbid itself for the services of someone no one else is after.

So Al F'ing Golden - a guy who has currently been a low-level assistant for my horrific Detroit Lions and was hired there as a favor? That Al Golden!? A guy that dressed like JoePa as a cute little gimmick!? Nonsense.

Have you considered the possibility Greg effed it up? Some of you with your unbridled Greg worship are funny.
No Greg worship here...nothing about my posting history suggests that, like NOTHING!

...and sure he could have effed it up...but this is Rutgers we are talking about so who is the “effer-upper” likely to be? Come on, be honest!!

Because you have idiots that can't allow the process to play out and every delay means the world is coming to an end for them.

If the Golden rumor had any truth we'd be discussing it on the pay side.

Take everything with a heavy dose of skepticism. Very few people have actual "real" inside information.

sorry but a major problem we have, unless the fan base responds, is a BOG that believes that our fan base will not step to the plate financially and support RU athletics like other BIG school fans --the lack of support from State residents, the media and the constant pressure by those who refuse to recognize the value of big time sports always makes the decision to spend controversial--in some respects we get what we sow---let's hope a majority on the BOG is not having difficulty overcoming this negative pressure and that's not the reason for any delay

Maybe we have good reason...almost 50 years of lies and ineptitude by a corrupt BOG

Does this put Lance Leipold in the mix?
Hopefully, after winning more games in Buffalo's history last year he is on track to go to a second consecutive bowl, only the fourth in Buffalo's history. Pay him 2 - 2.5 and with the extra 1.5 - 2 add to the coaches pool to get elite coordinators and two elite recruiting position coaches and we bowl in three years. Ga ron teed.

I would have been good with Golden last time around but this time it doesn't seem right, too far removed from the college game. I am good with Greg if we get him but sometimes I didn't care for his attitude and smugness and I wonder if this is gumming up negotiations. We really should not be looking at a contract longer than 5 years for anyone, if there is success prior to 5 years extensions are always possible.

I’m willing to be rational and to let the whole thing play out.

If I don’t get what I want then I’ll lash out based on my own opinion devoid of facts, sheer emotion, and complete lack of knowledge and experience with such things and whatever you do don’t tell me I’m wrong.

In other words I’ll behave like everyone else on this board.

Actually could have been three in a row he’s won at least 6 last three years but they got snubbed that first year... don’t know if that will happen this year.

So if he recruits well and starts to win/compete by year 3, you would never watch?

That won’t happen. He couldn’t even win at Miami..And I don’t have the patience anymore to sit tight and prove it out. A guy like Golden should be offering to coach for free at this point. He’s beyond “has been”. His place should be an assistant who recruits.

the best interest is not to torpedo the football program and you know it

this is the walk away moment for RU football fans

He got them to a better bowl than Toronto, if that’s what you’re implying.
Yes they havent won since 2001 but you get fired in Miami for "simply going to a better bowl than Toronto" with that Top 10 talent living in Florida. You get airplanes with you getting fired messages flying around during games, not have Death Stars and golf course back yards for that down there.

I've said this before but I don't know how you can just put aside some current financial obligations of the AD. I don't know how much stadium expansion debt is left but I'm guessing we're still servicing it, we have the loan from the school to pay back and we still have a subsidy which isn't wiped out as of yet....with those 3 factors it's not just simple to add more debt to the equation. The B10 pot of gold isn't bottomless and the normal operations of the department etc...still have to be funded.

It's easy to say spend money to make money which is true but timely wise investment is also important. Many companies overstretch themselves, sometimes prematurely, with the assumption of spending money to make money and then in turn go belly up or really constrict their normal operations under the weight of that debt. Investment matters but timely and wise also matters depending on what else is going on in the picture.

GE is a perfect example of a company whose one of many problems is too much debt to the point they've had to sell many pieces off to bring it down to a more manageable level while also constricting their normal operations and opportunity for growth.

Any infrastructure fully privately funded wouldn't run into any issues...it's likely because there other pieces including debt issuance that would cause a possible problem and in that case you have to take into account the current financial health and picture of the athletic department to see if adding more and how much debt is feasible.

edit: should also add the obvious that the facilities talked about aren’t revenue generating making the hurdle of issuing any debt to fund them that much higher

Breaking news...just read that they've officially moved on from schiano and are reaching out to Ash's people about coming back. However since it would be a new contract they would pay bout the buyout and the new contract...that can't be right could it?
hobbs said he would be a HC someday but i did not think it would be that soon

Yeah, but my concern is that's not what's happening.

My concern is that they're now going to overpay for someone else. Probably someone who is at least a step or two down from Schiano.
Greg is just off his rocker here. i get the concerm of overpaying for someone else but that someone else is someone we can get rid of. Greg is unrealistic and we would be saddled with him. Time to move on and turn the page and focus on the next candidate

you mispelled "develop an ecological preserve" like Rutgers did after that glorious Toronto bowl victory over a 6-7 MAC team.

And more importantly, if he isn't the right fit, we can $#itcan him in year 3 with absolutely no remorse and have this circle jerk about Schiano again.

To sum up this thread: Golden or not, some of the folks who were so certain this was a done deal are now hedging, and suggesting we may be moving on. Some are sticking to their guns and saying that Schiano is still it. I don’t know what to believe. But I’ll say this...ain’t no way that Golden, Butch Jones, Joe Moorhead, Lance Leopoldo changes the narrative around here. Unless Urban Meyer comes, it’s Greg or bust. If bust I’m out for football.
