Up front, sorry I don't know how to link. Today NYT sports section has an interesting article on Florida guard, Canyon Barry & his father Rick Barry & Underhanded free throw shooting. Canyon shoots them that way & has converted 89.2% this year, including 35 straight. He made the switch as a junior in HS.

I recall Wilt Chamberlain trying that technique and my sense is that the mechanics don't work for everyone. If they did...everyone would be shooting underhanded and would have been doing it that way since Rick Barry was playing.

Fact is it did work for Chamberlain. His percentage improved by 10% the only yr. he shot that way in '63. Highest percentage he ever shot. Would have improved more if he had stayed with it.

If players hold players accountable our FT shooting would improve in my humble opinion.

I believe Wilt Chamberlain's free-throw percentage went down when they stopped allowing him to dunk from the free-throw line . :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

I brought this up last week...and used Barry (because he was a NJ product) / very successful with the underhanded FT method.

If it's broken...fix it!

On a similar note, I noticed during OSU game Issa Thiam missed some free throws early. Later on in the game late towards the end he stepped further back from the line and hit both. I know it's all about concentration and muscle memory but I wish the coaching staff would just dissect every single players issue and figure it out. We need everyone to hit free throws

Yes....you're on to something.

Our FT shooting is absolutely abysmal/ Pikiell and staff need to coach the team up & stop the hemorrhaging.

We just have bad shooters. Geo Baker is supposedly a good shooter. Hopefully the 2018 center reclassifies. If we just had one good big man and one more shooter we go .500 in conference this year with Pike's coaching.

I actually watched the game where young Canyon Barry was shooting underhand and the commentators brought up the very thing the Times wrote about, prior to the Times article. For Barry it worked and improved his FT immensely. For others, not so much.
