Free Throws

GG came in with the reputation of being one of the best HS shooters in the country. He can barely hit a foul shot. Most players just don't improve their shooting under Pike. It generally gets worse.

Free throw shooting and rebounding are two fundamentals of basketball. This team is not good at either. They need to improve in both areas if they want to win 10 games or more in conference play.

GG is gonna be fine with FT’s once he stops moving backwards. I think he’s likely putting extra time into becoming better on D - which he needs to do - and it might be affecting that part of his game.

If this abomination continues they are going to lose a couple of games this year because they can't hit them.

Coming into the game they ranked #306 of 361 teams. 😲
You don't get better by simply putting in practice time at the charity stripe. You get better by practicing with an expert eye watching you and giving you feedback every few minutes.

Given the poor foul shooting, I would conclude either players are practicing foul shooting with no feedback or the feedback is too poor to be useful.

It’s inconceivable to me that a guy with as good a reputation as a shooter could be this bad at the line. I cannot think of another example of any Rutgers player, any division one player or any NBA player

It shouldn't. That being said I think he'll eventually be alright.

Yeah I doubt that.

The most upsetting factor in the the abysmal foul shooting is that most of the games played so far were at the RAC in front of a friendly crowd.Simpson and Fernandes are the players with the best foul shooting technique.

Simpson should be in charge of the clinic. His shots are perfect, nothing but net.
Exactly…each of them should have a set routine in place that helps them become automatic when they get to the line without overthinking
Gavin has a great stroke but he just rushes

Gavin should be an 80% ft shooter. He needs to develop a routine to use every ft and to not rush it.
I think (hope) that Gavin is all about confidence and feeling comfortable here. As someone else said I bet his FT% in HS was great. That being said other than Derek Simpson (6-6) yesterday every single player was 50% or below - without Simpson we were 7-20 in FTs - crazy and unacceptable!

There is zero arc on his free throw shooting. He's a true brick layer.
Right - I said this in another thread discussing JMike. He pushes the ball and shoots line drives on his FTs. Arc on his ball would do wonders.

So many guys in all sports practice doing things the wrong way.

After the game, we are #340
Yikes, didn't think it would drop that low and that's with Simpson shooting 6-6 yesterday,

It really needs to improve otherwise close games with leads won't be wins when the buzzer sounds.

Foul shooting is an entirely different mindset and unique set of mechanics. Once the proper movements are learned and employed consistently, foul shooting is 90% mental and 10% physical. The player is shooting from a stationary position and has a good amount of time to shoot. That necessitates replicating the movement of each shot perfectly time after time and this requires 100% mental concentration. Practice the proper technique and develop the necessary concentration. Once instructed on the movements, a player can practice alone in an empty gym. The perfected shot should look and be effortless. When achieved, the mental portion concerns executing the same movements over and over again, and also, developing the intense concentration which blots out all distractions. I don't think the necessary concentration is a natural occurring element in most players and has to be cultivated coaching-wise and developed by each individual player. The will and need to improve comes from within the player. What really matters most is who is going to put the time and effort in to get better.

Chicken and egg scenario.
The only thing that allows you to be comfortable and confident is making them in games.

That's definitely one way - but I also think if he starts playing well on the floor and finds the consistency he's been lacking his FTs are sure to follow.

Will Pike ever say we suck in public? NOPE. Based on game observations he is not telling the truth
Well duh. You really want him to bad mouth his sucky free throw shooters to the press. I don't think that would go well.
